Toyota Teams Up with Waymo! bZ4X Autonomous Fleet Testing in Japan Slated for 2027, Eyeing the Nation's First Domestically Built Fully Autonomous Taxi Service

[BitAuto News] Toyota has announced an expanded collaboration with US autonomous driving technology firm Waymo, with plans to kick off initial operations and trial validation of an autonomous fleet using the Toyota bZ4X in Japan in 2027. This initiative paves the way for Japan's first fully autonomous taxi service built upon a locally mass-produced vehicle. The new models will be manufactured at Toyota's Takaoka Plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, with Waymo's autonomous driving hardware integrated directly on the factory assembly line, further propelling Level 4 autonomous driving technology towards real-world commercial deployment.

Toyota and Waymo announced their latest collaboration blueprint on 30 October 2026, advancing their joint venture in the autonomous driving arena into a new phase. According to official announcements from both companies, the Toyota bZ4X will serve as the base model for pilot trials and validation in Japan starting in 2027, with the ultimate objective of laying the groundwork for the future rollout of a fully autonomous taxi service.

The latest tie-up builds upon an initial agreement reached between both parties in April 2025. Under the arrangement, Toyota will oversee vehicle development and manufacturing, whilst Waymo will supply its proprietary "Waymo Driver" autonomous technology and associated hardware—leveraging the technical strengths of both giants to accelerate the broader adoption of Level 4 autonomous vehicles.

Notably, Toyota has yet to confirm the exact fleet size, trial locations, or commercial launch dates for the 2027 rollout. As such, the project should currently be regarded strictly as a testing and validation phase, rather than a confirmed full-scale commercial debut of driverless taxi services in Japan.

bZ4X Becomes Base Vehicle for Waymo's Next-Gen Robotaxi

Serving as the centrepiece of this collaboration, the Toyota bZ4X all-electric SUV will differ markedly from standard passenger cars. This dedicated fleet will be purpose-built and modified for autonomous taxi operations, seamlessly integrating Waymo's autonomous driving hardware and onboard systems.

On the production front, Toyota will manufacture the vehicles at its Takaoka Plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture. The entire process—from bare-chassis assembly to the installation of Waymo's autonomous driving hardware—will be completed within the same facility. This integrated production setup streamlines the assembly and installation process, whilst facilitating future fleet expansion at scale.

In terms of passenger experience, the purpose-built bZ4X will place a strong emphasis on rear cabin comfort and ease of ingress and egress. Key enhancements include more generous rear legroom, automatic power doors, an electric tailgate, and ambient cabin lighting, tailoring the vehicle to meet the rigorous demands of everyday robotaxi service.

What Is Level 4 Autonomous Driving? How Does It Differ from Standard Driver Assistance Systems?

Under SAE International's automated driving classification, Level 4 is defined as "High Driving Automation". Within predefined operational design domains and conditions, the vehicle is capable of executing all driving tasks independently, without requiring sustained intervention or oversight from a human driver.

In other words, Level 4 is fundamentally distinct from standard Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) widely fitted to modern production cars, such as Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. While ADAS features still mandate that the driver actively monitors the road and remains ready to take over at any moment, a Level 4 system assumes full responsibility for the entire driving process under specified conditions.

However, Level 4 autonomy does not imply that the vehicle can navigate unconditionally across every road type, in any weather, or under all operating environments. Real-world deployment remains constrained by geographic boundaries, road infrastructure, and system parameters, with rigorous testing and regulatory approvals remaining decisive factors before commercial service can officially commence.

UK Expansion to Follow Japan: Right-Hand Drive Markets Mark the Next Frontier

Beyond the Japanese domestic market, Toyota and Waymo also plan to progressively roll out these vehicles to the UK over the coming years, alongside other international territories where Waymo currently operates or plans to launch services.

With both Japan and the UK adopting right-hand drive (RHD) road configurations, commencing trials in Japan allows both partners to amass crucial real-world operating experience in an RHD environment. For Waymo, collaborating with Toyota also secures a dependable, high-volume production vehicle platform, providing a flexible foundation for scaling its global robotaxi fleet.

Furthermore, Toyota will continue to explore the feasibility of applying autonomous driving technology to private passenger cars, collaborating with its software subsidiary Woven by Toyota to examine how data and technical insights gathered from Waymo's real-world operations can enhance road safety and traffic efficiency.
