Hong Kong to auction 220 vehicle registration marks online from 3 to 7 September

According to Transport Department, its next online auction for vehicle registration marks will run from 12pm on 3 September (Thursday) to 12pm on 7 September (Monday) via E-Auction.

Anyone looking to take part must register for an account on the platform before placing a bid.

Auction details

The online auction will offer 220 ordinary vehicle registration marks, with the full list now available on the E-Auction website.

Those who have paid the HK$1,000 deposit to reserve a registration mark will still need to register for the online auction and place a bid, including the first bid at the HK$1,000 reserve price. Otherwise, the reserved mark can be won by another bidder at the reserve price or above.

Marks beginning with "HK" or "XX", together with special and personalised registration marks, will continue to be sold through in-person auctions.

For bidders

Identity verification

Registration requires iAM Smart+ with digital signing capability, or a valid electronic certificate and email address.

Hong Kong residents using an existing iAM Smart account will need to provide their Hong Kong identity card number, while non-Hong Kong residents can use their passport or another valid identity document.

Digital signature for the first bid

The first bid in each auction, including a preset automatic bid, must be digitally signed using iAM Smart+ or an electronic certificate to meet the requirements of Hong Kong's Electronic Transactions Ordinance.

Bidding extensions

Any bid placed during the final 10 minutes will extend the auction for that registration mark by another 10 minutes. Extensions can continue until the bidding period reaches a maximum of 24 hours.

Payment

Successful bidders must log in to the E-Auction platform and complete the buyer details in the Memorandum of Sale within 48 hours of receiving the notification email. Payment can be made by credit card, FPS or PPS, while cash and cheques are not accepted.

Registration within 12 months

The registration mark can only be assigned to a vehicle registered in the name of the successful bidder or their limited company. The registration must be completed within 12 months of the Memorandum of Sale being issued.

Marks not registered within the deadline will be cancelled and reallocated separately by the Transport Department without prior notice.
