Toyota Alphard vs Vellfire in Hong Kong: Same starting price of HK$699,670, but what's the difference?

The Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are two of Hong Kong's most popular luxury MPVs. They share the same platform, offer similar engine options and even start at exactly the same price: HK$699,670.

Despite their similarities, there are some important differences in pricing, styling and the versions available. According to BitAuto Hong Kong's vehicle database, the gap between their most expensive variants is nearly HK$150,000. So what exactly are you paying for?

According to BitAuto Hong Kong's vehicle database, the Alphard is listed with five variants, while the Vellfire has three.

Both models start at HK$699,670 for their 2.5-litre petrol variants. Their 2.4-litre turbocharged versions are also identically priced at HK$999,920.

The difference becomes more noticeable with the hybrids. The Alphard A HEV costs HK$1,199,440, compared with HK$1,150,720 for the Vellfire V HEV — a difference of HK$48,720.

Fuel economy

Fuel economy is another consideration, especially for drivers who spend much of their time in Hong Kong's stop-start traffic.

BitAuto's figures put the Alphard A HEV's combined fuel consumption at 6.13 L/100 km, compared with 9.52 L/100 km for the petrol-powered Vellfire V250.

That gives the Alphard hybrid a substantial advantage over the Vellfire petrol model in terms of stated fuel consumption, which could translate into lower fuel bills for frequent city drivers.

Dimensions

In terms of size, there is very little to choose between the two.

The Alphard measures 5,010 mm in length, while the Vellfire is 5,005 mm long. Both are 1,850 mm wide and 1,950 mm tall, with an identical 3,000 mm wheelbase.

Both models also use Toyota's TNGA GA-K platform, so their basic cabin proportions and underlying vehicle architecture are closely related.

Positioning

Despite their nearly identical dimensions and shared platform, the two models have different characters.

Alphard: Executive luxury

The Alphard takes a more luxurious, business-oriented approach, with a large chrome grille and an imposing appearance. Its executive-style rear seats make it a popular choice among business owners and for chauffeured transport.

It also offers more variants, from the entry-level A250 to the range-topping HEV EL, with prices ranging from around HK$700,000 to HK$1.3 million.

Vellfire: Sportier and more youthful

The Vellfire has a sharper exterior design and a sportier grille, making it more appealing to younger families and buyers who enjoy driving.

Special editions such as the Midnight Edition give it an even more distinctive look.

Put simply, choose the Alphard if executive transport and top-spec luxury are your priorities. Go for the Vellfire if you're buying for personal or family use and prefer a sportier design.

And if your budget is around HK$700,000 for an entry-level model, either one is worth considering.
