In a Shrinking Market, Why Is It Still Rising?

On September 22, the all-new QQ3 Modern Edition launched in Wuhu. The official guide price starts at 83,900 RMB. An 80,000-class pure electric compact car, in the 2026 Chinese auto market, is inherently a "rather out of place" presence.

In the past six months, the micro EV market has experienced an avalanche. From January to May 2026, A00 class sedan cumulative sales reached 192,000 units, a year-on-year decline of 64%, with market share dropping from 6% in the same period last year to 2.7%. The Wuling Hongguang MINIEV, which once sold 60,000 units monthly, has now hovered around just over 10,000 units for many months. In August, the entire micro sedan market's cumulative retail sales were only 32,000 units, with only one model in the entire sub-segment selling over 10,000. Several compact cars that once sold over 10,000 units monthly have now dropped to three-digit or even two-digit monthly sales.

Looking at the sales of the all-new QQ3 against this backdrop, the contrast becomes apparent.

In August, the all-new QQ3 sales reached 19,103 units, a month-on-month increase of 64.07%. Among them, domestic sales were 13,911 units, and overseas sales were 5,192 units. Sales have exceeded 10,000 units for 5 consecutive months, and orders from home and abroad have surpassed 100,000 units since launch.

In the A0-class pure electric compact car market, this report card looks even more interesting when viewed together. In the August A0-class sedan wholesale sales ranking, Geely Star Wish 60,955 units, BYD Seagull 36,106 units, BYD Dolphin 29,147 units, Wuling Bingo Pro 22,608 units, QQ3 EV 19,103 units. QQ3 EV ranks fifth; among the top four, none is an easy opponent.

More notably, overseas market sales account for nearly one-third of the total. Pre-sales in Thailand and Indonesia quickly exceeded a cumulative 20,000 units, covering over 100 countries and regions globally. This is not "export by the way," but actual overseas demand. In the Southeast Asian market, Japanese brands have ruled for decades. For a Chinese compact car to stand firm in this market is itself something worth pondering.

Three Paths to Counter-Trend Growth

Why can the all-new QQ3 still rise in a retreating market?

The first path is "upward movement in product definition". The all-new QQ3 did not define itself as a "commuting tool", but as a "premium compact car". 2700mm wheelbase, 70L intelligent electric front trunk, 375L to 1450L expandable trunk space, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, 15.6-inch 2.5K central control screen, all-brand phone connectivity. In the A0-class market, these configurations are not "spec stuffing", but "filling gaps". The common disease of past A0-class compact cars was "good enough is fine", but users are no longer satisfied with "good enough". Consumers are migrating from "good enough for commuting" micro cars to A0-class models with larger space, longer range, and richer configurations. QQ3 is exactly hitting this rhythm.

The second path is "continuous iteration of intelligent experience". In August, the all-new QQ3 launched its first major OTA upgrade since its release, adding features such as voiceprint vehicle control from outside the car, automatic parking exit, 540° panoramic AVM rain night mode, baby mode, sentry mode, K-song mode, etc. OTA is rarely taken seriously in the below 100,000 yuan market. Many brands treat OTA as exclusive to high-spec versions or "future promises". The all-new QQ3's approach is "always new with frequent use". Buying a car is not the end of the experience, but the beginning.

The third path is "quality premium brought by global verification". Before entering the global market, the all-new QQ3 completed global road tests covering 9 major regions and 44 countries, with the longest single-vehicle test mileage reaching over 300,000 km. It underwent over 1,000 virtual validations, over 2,000 compliance validations, and over 3 million km of whole-vehicle validation. Bedrock body, 82% high-strength steel, CATL battery cells, six-dimensional electric safety certification. Translating these validation data into user language amounts to one sentence: This car can be driven not only in China, but also in Thailand's rainy season, Indonesia's mountain roads, and the Middle East's high heat.

The Questions the Modern Edition Aims to Answer

Returning to the Modern Edition.

As the official modified version of the QQ3 series, the Modern Edition bears a special task: under the premise of stable sales volume, extending to higher personalized demands.

It uses a design language called "Neo Retro". Fully wrapped same-color paint, Time Badge wheels, Wind Trace Racing Decals, Golden Age Grille, Retro White front and rear bumpers. The interior uses Cloud Velvet Beige coloring, Houndstooth custom texture, Velvet headliner. The exclusive color "Modern Era" presents a film grain texture in retro green, "Anne Pearl" creates a warm texture between milk apricot and pearl luster. 6-layer 2K high-texture car paint, aging gloss loss controlled within 5%, far lower than the industry standard of 20%.

The value of this design lies not in how much "premium material" it piled up, but in that it completed a complete design narrative. From appearance to interior, from coloring to details, every element answers the same question: Can an 80,000-class compact car own its own aesthetic system? The all-new QQ3 has won the Red Dot Design Award four consecutive times, covering concept, product, brand, and communication design fields. Among them, QQ3 won the "2026 Red Dot Product Design Award", and its smart cockpit interface won the "2026 Red Dot Brand and Communication Design Award".

Modification itself is a culture within QQ3's user group. The launch event exhibited six modified cars: National Style Compact Car, California Holiday, Cat Car, Hand-painted Car, Urban Safari, Outdoor Mountain Tour. From fan culture to pet companionship, from coastal vacation to outdoor exploration, the six cars correspond to six lifestyles. What the Modern Edition does is turn "modification" from a aftermarket business into an OEM option—the official version meets users' needs for "difference", while reducing the quality, compatibility, and aesthetic risks that self-modification might bring.

A Final Word

The QQ brand cumulative sales have exceeded 1.6 million units, selling well in over 100 countries and regions at home and abroad. From the 2003 national compact car to the 2026 premium pure electric compact car, the QQ IP has completed a generational inheritance in over twenty years.

The launch of the all-new QQ3 Modern Edition is not an isolated product release. It stands on a foundation of over 10,000 units sold for 5 consecutive months, orders exceeding 100,000, and overseas sales accounting for nearly one-third of the total. In an overall shrinking market, it achieved counter-trend growth. In a track dominated by low-price competition, it chose to go upward.

Only when the tide recedes do you know who is swimming naked. The answer given by the all-new QQ3 is simple: do not rely on low prices to boost sales, rely on quality and experience to retain users. The Modern Edition is the continuation of this logic, and also a statement by the QQ brand to redefine "premium compact car" in the intelligent electric era.
