BYD’s Dolphin G PHEV Launches in Europe in June: Over 1,000km Range Takes Aim at Toyota’s Home Turf

BYD is set to launch its first vehicle designed specifically for the European market. The BYD Dolphin G (internal code) — essentially a plug‑in hybrid Dolphin — will arrive in European showrooms in June, targeting the region’s highly competitive compact hatchback segment.

Unlike its domestic pure‑electric sibling, the Dolphin G is built around BYD’s latest fifth‑generation DM plug‑in hybrid technology. It pairs a 1.5‑litre four‑cylinder petrol engine with a front electric motor, offering series and parallel hybrid modes. The system delivers an estimated system output of 193 kW, with a WLTP pure electric range of approximately 90 km and a combined range exceeding 1,000 km — a direct response to WLTP’s stringent testing cycle. Early reports also suggest fuel consumption of just 1.8 L/100 km.

To succeed in Europe, BYD has made significant interior compromises. Physical buttons and knobs remain on the centre console, while a head‑up display is positioned ahead of the driver — both features European drivers have consistently preferred over full‑touch interfaces.

At roughly 4.3 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, the Dolphin G is notably larger than the Toyota Yaris (about 3.9 metres), meaning “bigger” rather than mimicking European dimensions. Importantly, as a plug‑in hybrid rather than a pure EV, the new model avoids the up to 38% countervailing tariffs the EU has imposed on Chinese battery electric vehicles, preserving BYD’s cost advantage.

Looking ahead, BYD plans to produce the Dolphin G locally at its new factory in Szeged, Hungary, which will significantly lower the final price and signal a long‑term commitment to the European market.

Pricing remains undisclosed, but estimates suggest a European starting price above €25,000. BYD’s global strategy is now sharply defined: maintain razor‑thin margins at home for scale and loyalty, while generating healthier premium profits overseas through products the domestic market may never see.

For Hong Kong buyers, right‑hand drive availability has not yet been confirmed. But if the Dolphin G eventually arrives, it will offer an enticing alternative in a segment long dominated by Japanese and European incumbents.
