Wheel-Side Motor

2026-10-26 15:50:00

A wheel-side motor is a distributed drive motor mounted near the wheel assembly (typically on both sides of the subframe). It transmits drive directly to the corresponding wheel via a reduction gearbox and driveshaft, achieving independent drive for each individual wheel.

🔧 Structural Composition and Operating Principle

A wheel-side motor is primarily composed of components such as the stator, rotor, front and rear bearings, and end covers. It delivers power to the road wheels through wheel-side reduction gears and driveshafts to propel the vehicle.

This layout eliminates the conventional final drive and differential unit, allowing the speed and rotational direction of each wheel to be controlled completely independently.

⚡ Key Advantages

  • Agile Handling: With all four wheels driven independently, special manoeuvres such as tank turns (turning on the spot) can be executed by counter-rotating the left and right wheels.

  • High Driveline Efficiency: Eliminating numerous mechanical transmission components shortens the power delivery path, resulting in lower overall energy consumption and enhanced regenerative braking efficiency.

  • Optimised Chassis Packaging: The compact powertrain layout facilitates low-floor and wide-aisle designs, which is a major advantage for commercial vehicles such as city buses.

🚧 Key Challenges

  • Demanding Control Algorithms: Operating four motors in precise sync requires highly advanced software architecture for electronic differential control and torque vectoring management.

  • Driveline Packaging Constraints: In rear-axle applications, dynamic movement and suspension articulation between the chassis and wheels impose design limitations on the driveshaft's universal joints.

  • Cost and Market Adoption: Production costs remain high, meaning large-scale deployment across mainstream passenger cars is still an ongoing process.

🏭 Current Industry Adoption and Trends

Wheel-side motor technology is currently relatively mature in the commercial vehicle segment; for instance, the BYD K9 fully electric bus adopts a dual wheel-side motor setup and has been exported to multiple international markets. In the passenger car arena, the "e⁴" (Yi Si Fang) quad-motor system on the BYD Yangwang U8 has brought wheel-side motors into the mainstream spotlight, showcasing signature capabilities such as tank turns.

In terms of global intellectual property, China holds a dominant position in the wheel-side motor domain, accounting for 40.54% of total patents worldwide, with BYD ranking first globally with 99 patents. Moving forward, wheel-side drive architectures are poised to progressively supersede centralised drive units, led by the high-end passenger vehicle segment.
