Wanxiang Automobile is a senior brand in China's new energy commercial vehicle sector, affiliated with Shanghai Wanxiang Automotive Manufacturing Co., Ltd., with brand history traceable to 1972, officially registered and established in 1985, formerly the Shanghai Wanxiang Automobile Factory. Wanxiang Automobile is a high-tech enterprise developed from a state-owned enterprise in Shanghai, possessing production qualifications for commercial vehicle complete vehicles, new energy buses, pure electric trucks, special vehicles, and fuel cell trucks. Products cover various vehicle types mainly including diesel, hybrid, pure electric, hydrogen fuel buses, tour buses, logistics vehicles, sanitation vehicles, etc.. The brand logo adopts a red background horizontal oval frame, with a special design figure composed of the letter "W" in the center, which is highly recognizable after innovative design. In 2022, Tianhong Group took over Wanxiang Automobile, ushering in a new development stage for the brand.

Development History

Wanxiang Automobile's development can be divided into three historical stages.

1972 to 1985: This was the brand's technical incubation and startup period. Its predecessor, Shanghai Wanxiang Automobile Factory, had already started relevant business as early as 1972 and was officially registered and established on August 29, 1985, with Wang Zhixin as the legal representative. Early on, it provided dedicated cars for former US President Nixon's visit to China and exported to many South American countries. The brand's original base was built in Jiuting, Songjiang, Shanghai. Later, to cooperate with the construction of Shanghai Rail Transit Line 9 and improve manufacturing standards, a new factory area was built in the eastern development zone of Songjiang Industrial Zone. In December 2005, South Korea's Daewoo invested through its only joint venture in China — Guilin Daewoo Bus Co., Ltd. — to officially establish the new Shanghai Wanxiang Company.

2017 to 2021: Wanxiang Automobile continued to promote technology iteration and product line expansion. It won the "Outstanding Contribution Award for New Energy Buses" in 2018 and began to strengthen efforts in the fields of new energy logistics vehicles, hydrogen fuel buses, and smart sanitation vehicles around 2020.

2022 to Present: This is a critical period for the brand entering a new development stage. After Tianhong Group took over, Wanxiang Automobile transformed into a background controlled by a large private enterprise. Under this new structure, four major production bases were established in Songjiang, Danyang, Taizhou, and Lingang, each performing its duties to form a professional capacity layout.

Brand Matrix / Product Line

Wanxiang Automobile has now formed a new energy commercial vehicle product matrix covering multiple sub-markets, the main product series include:

Wanxiang Bus Series—— Brand's founding product. Wanxiang Automobile has long focused on the R&D and manufacturing of medium and large city buses, tour group buses, and has maintained a market share of about 40% in Shanghai for a long time. Products cover city buses and tour buses of various length levels from 6 to 12 meters. Power types cover pure electric, hydrogen fuel cell, diesel, and hybrid, etc. Representative models include Wanxiang SXC6105CBEV pure electric bus (10490mm vehicle length, 24-48 seats), Wanxiang SXC6121GFCEV hydrogen fuel cell low-entry bus (12000mm vehicle length, 83 seats/20-40 seats), the latter equipped with Shanghai Electric Drive Co., Ltd. 140kW motor, maximum speed 69km.

Wanxiang Logistics Vehicle Series—— Product line focused on development by the brand in recent years, owning models such as Wanxiang T01, Wanxiang T02, Wanxiang K01, etc. Wanxiang T01 is positioned as a pure electric microvan, body size 4890×1715×2035mm, wheelbase 3050mm, cargo volume 6m³, CLTC pure electric range 240 km, supports fast charging (1.5 hours) and slow charging (11.0 hours). Wanxiang T02 is positioned slightly larger, cargo volume 7m³, equipped with rear doors opening 180 degrees, and offers a passenger version (11+1 or 9+1 seat layout). Wanxiang K01 is positioned as a pure electric microtruck, belonging to box cage transport vehicles.

Sanitation Vehicles and Special Vehicle Series—— Covering special vehicle models such as smart sanitation vehicles, box-type transport vehicles, etc. Representative product is Shanghai Wanxiang SXC5040XXYBEV pure electric box-type transport vehicle (5968mm vehicle length, total mass 4495kg, motor power 100kW).

Market Performance

After Tianhong Group took over in 2022, Wanxiang Automobile significantly expanded the new energy logistics vehicle sector on the basis of its original city bus business. The logistics vehicle sector signed strategic cooperation agreements with domestic famous commercial vehicle enterprises such as Foton Time Automobile, with orders on hand of about 2.5 billion yuan. In the hydrogen fuel bus field, Wanxiang Automobile's hydrogen fuel bus sales ranked third nationwide in 2022, with 118 vehicles achieving full commercial operation in Shanghai Lingang; the SXC6121GFCEV model won the "Demonstration Star" title. In the domestic bus market, Wanxiang buses have long occupied about 40% of the Shanghai market share and won many bus orders such as Minhang Passenger Transport.

However, the brand's operating conditions have shown significant fluctuations in recent years. As of 2025, Jiangsu Wanxiang Automotive Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has 343 insured employees, owns 41 patents, 1 corporate brand project, and 14 administrative licenses. It was recognized as a technology-based SME in 2023 and became a high-tech enterprise in 2024. In contrast, Shanghai Wanxiang Automotive Manufacturing Co., Ltd.'s 2025 annual vehicle production and sales both fell 97.9% year-on-year, with only 8 new energy vehicles produced and 8 sold. Additionally, as of 2025, Jiangsu Wanxiang Automotive Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was involved in 53 cases of legal filing, 66 court announcement items, and 793 associated risks.

Core Technology

Wanxiang Automobile's core technology covers two major technology routes: pure electric and hydrogen fuel.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Technology: The SXC6121GFCEV model adopts Shanghai Electric Drive Co., Ltd.'s 140kW fuel cell system, which is the commercialization representative of Wanxiang Automobile's hydrogen fuel cell bus technology.

Pure Electric Logistics Vehicle Technology: The Wanxiang T01 is equipped with a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. Three battery options are available (Anchi New Energy 38.016kWh, Gotion High-Tech 41.932kWh, Henan LiDong 41.472kWh), corresponding to an operating range of 240-250 km. Drive motor options are Fangzheng or Jingjin motors, with a peak power of 70kW. It features a rear-engine rear-drive layout combined with front MacPherson independent suspension and rear leaf spring non-independent suspension.

Three-Electric Integration and Monitoring Platform: Wanxiang Automobile built a big data monitoring platform, achieving 24-hour vehicle operation status monitoring.

Customization Design Capability: The brand's logistics vehicle overseas version adopts different central control screen solutions for left-hand drive/right-hand drive markets respectively (left-hand drive floating 10.1-inch HD central control screen, right-hand drive embedded 7-inch HD central control screen). Configurations such as knob shifting and the ESC electronic stability control system are all targetedly optimized for different market scenarios.

Manufacturing Layout: The Songjiang base mainly produces new energy buses (3,000 units per year per shift). The Danyang and Taizhou bases focus on logistics vehicles, while the Lingang base is positioned as an intelligent commercial vehicle R&D and manufacturing center.

Overseas Layout

Since 2023, Wanxiang logistics vehicles' overseas layout has accelerated significantly. Wanxiang logistics vehicles obtained "EU Whole Vehicle Certification", passing over 40 strict inspection standards, obtaining sales licenses for the European market. The brand has completed layout in European (Spain, France, planned to enter Italy and Germany subsequently), Southeast Asian (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand), Latin American, and other markets. On March 29, 2024, Wanxiang T01 bulk orders were officially shipped to South Korea, the model is equipped with EVE 50.23kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate power battery, WLTC range 250 km. Wanxiang logistics vehicle overseas product line covers Wanxiang T01 Left/Right Hand Drive, Wanxiang T02 Left/Right Hand Drive, and Wanxiang T02 Passenger Version Right Hand Drive three series, among which the passenger version is custom-developed for overseas market passenger transport scenarios. Wanxiang logistics vehicles clearly plan to expand in the future towards "large-scale going global" direction in the supply chain, technology, and services, etc..

Future Outlook

Wanxiang Automobile has established a technology orientation of "focusing on zero-emission model R&D", relying on the professional capacity layout of Songjiang (Bus), Danyang (Logistics Vehicle), Taizhou (Logistics Vehicle), and Lingang (Intelligent Commercial Vehicle R&D and Manufacturing Center) four major bases, continuously strengthening the brand labels of "Reliable, Green", committed to becoming a benchmark for scenario-based solutions in the new energy commercial vehicle field. In terms of business, the logistics vehicle sector has orders on hand of about 2.5 billion yuan, hydrogen fuel buses have entered commercial operation and still have market expansion space; overseas markets have obtained EU whole vehicle certification and reached bulk orders with Korean partners, the layout in European/American and Southeast Asian markets continues to deepen. However, at the same time, the brand faces severe challenges such as insufficient capacity utilization rate, operating fluctuations, and legal risks. The core of Wanxiang Automobile's future development lies in whether it can achieve effective transformation of product structure and solid recovery of market confidence on the basis of its original bus manufacturing advantages, relying on new energy logistics vehicles and overseas exports as two new growth engines.
