WORK Wheels

2026-10-10 06:30:00

WORK Wheels is an established Japanese alloy wheel manufacturer founded in 1977 by Takeshi Tanaka in Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture. The brand name stems from "Artwork" whilst also symbolising "Teamwork", reflecting WORK's dual commitment to aesthetic design and manufacturing precision. Operating two manufacturing facilities in Osaka and Okayama spanning over 23,000 square metres, WORK adopts a bespoke build-to-order production model with a catalogue spanning 21 series and 74 designs, catering to a wide spectrum of fitments from sedans and sports cars to SUVs.

Motorsport DNA and Technical Feedback

WORK's core engineering ethos is anchored in the principle of "race-proven data driving production development". The brand established its motorsport division in 1983, actively competing in F2, F3, and Formula 3000, ultimately propelling a team to the All Japan Championship title in the 1991 Japanese Formula 3000 Championship. In 1998, WORK pioneered the supply of forged magnesium alloy single-piece wheels in Japanese F3—a groundbreaking move in an era when cast wheels dominated the grid.

In rallying, WORK partnered with Toshihiro Arai in the PCWRC (Production World Rally Championship), clinching 4 victories across 6 rounds to secure the 2005 PCWRC title. From 2014 onwards, WORK continued its partnership with Arai in the All Japan Rally Championship, powering him to overall championship victories in 2015, 2018, and 2019.

Drifting stands as WORK's most culturally influential domain. WORK entered the D1 Grand Prix in 2003 and launched the WORK EMOTION CR-KAI in 2004. With its aggressive deep-concave taper design—a rarity amongst sports wheels at the time—combined with drift-focused fitments and accessible pricing, it became an immediate market sensation. The brand subsequently expanded the lineup with the EMOTION XD9, XT7, CR Kiwami, D9R, and T7R, with over 20 D1 drivers competing on WORK wheels, cementing "EMOTION" as virtually synonymous with D1 drifting.

In Super GT, WORK has served as an official wheel supplier since 1998 during the JGTC era, outfitting race machinery such as the FTO, MR-S, Diablo, Murcielago, Porsche, McLaren, and BMW. In 2015, the No. 10 GAINER TANAX GT-R captured the class championship running on WORK wheels.

Core Technology: Solid Rim Flange

WORK's signature engineering hallmark is the "WORK Solid Rim Flange". In conventional wheel manufacturing, many brands heavily market "forged" construction, yet forging is often confined to the wheel face, with the outer rim barrel produced via flow-forming. WORK maintains that the barrel bears the primary load of the vehicle, meaning a forged centre disc alone provides limited overall structural reinforcement. By forming the flange into a solid block structure during barrel production and pairing it with a reinforced rim wall, WORK delivers an unmatched advantage in strength and torsional rigidity.

This engineering approach is seamlessly integrated with WORK's "On-Demand" bespoke manufacturing system, allowing every wheel to be tailored to specific customer requirements regarding diameter, width, offset, disc type, colour finish, and bolt patterns. All WORK production plants in Japan are ISO 9001-certified, handling casting, CNC machining, paint finishing, and final assembly entirely in-house.

Main Product Lineup

WORK's portfolio is segmented across several series tailored to distinct automotive lifestyles, with MEISTER and EMOTION standing as its two most iconic pillar lines.

The MEISTER series represents WORK's flagship motorsport lineup, embodying its design heritage from classic DTM styling to modern circuit competition. The MEISTER S1 is the most legendary model in the range, offered in 2-piece and 3-piece modular configurations and celebrated for its functional, aggressive aesthetic. In 2025, WORK introduced the MEISTER L1 1PIECE SUV, extending MEISTER's race-bred DNA into the SUV segment. The "L" in L1 denotes Liberal (progressive) and Linear (direct). Inspired by race wheels machined directly from forged billets, it translates the signature "deep concave centre cone + solid spoke" architecture into a 1-piece cast design. Compared to the MEISTER S1 1PIECE SUV, the L1 sheds up to 1.71 kg in its 16-inch specification, achieving significant unsprung weight reduction whilst maintaining MEISTER-grade rigidity.

The EMOTION series is WORK's primary offering for the drift and street performance community. The EMOTION CR Kiwami is the most celebrated wheel in the range, instantly recognisable in JDM culture for its twin 5-spoke layout and deep concave face. In December 2025, WORK launched the EMOTION CR Shigoku as the direct evolutionary successor to the Kiwami. Developed under the philosophy of "the natural evolution of Kiwami", it preserves the iconic design DNA whilst being comprehensively engineered for modern vehicle dynamics and demands, featuring optimised fitments tailored for modern performance platforms such as the GR86, BRZ, GR Corolla, and GR Yaris.

China Market

The sole general distributor for WORK across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau is Hong Kong Cheung Kee Tyre Trading Co., Ltd., established in 1958. The company transitioned in the early 2000s to specialise in premium imported performance aftermarket brands, also distributing BBS from Germany and Vellano from the United States. Within the aftermarket scene, WORK is renowned for its strong "stance and fitment" appeal, commanding a massive following among slammed and stance enthusiasts and maintaining a consistent presence at premier tuning exhibitions like the GT Show.

WORK products are positioned in the mid-to-high-end segment, with 2025 market pricing ranging from RM3,000 to RM6,000, primarily utilising 2-piece or 3-piece flow-formed low-pressure cast construction. WORK's key market differentiator lies in its exceptional level of bespoke customisation and authentic JDM design purity—making it a leading Japanese alternative alongside RAYS and BBS for enthusiasts demanding timeless Japanese aesthetics, precise offset customisation, and dedicated stance fitment.
