Volkswagen Tharu

2026-10-04 23:10:00

Model Overview

The Tharu is SAIC Volkswagen's core compact SUV. Since its domestic launch in China in 2018, it has consistently ranked among the top-selling joint-venture compact SUVs, backed by solid German build quality and well-rounded product appeal. At the 2024 Chengdu Motor Show, the lineup welcomed the "Tharu XR", followed by the official launch of the 2026 Tharu XR in August 2025. Currently, the Tharu range adopts a dual-tier sales strategy comprising the "XR Edition" and the "Mainstream Edition", with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM125,900 to RM216,600. To maintain its competitive edge, the carmaker introduced a limited-time promotional offer with prices starting from as low as RM79,900. The range offers three powertrain options: 1.5L naturally aspirated, 1.5T turbocharged, and 2.0T turbocharged. Key segment rivals include joint-venture compact SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Frontlander, and Honda HR-V.

Design Language

The 2026 Volkswagen Tharu carries forward the brand's signature design language, striking a balance between mature sophistication and youthful appeal. The front fascia features a multi-slat grille flanked by headlamps connected via a full-width LED light bar. High-spec variants are equipped with dual-tier matrix LED headlamps and an illuminated VW badge, delivering strong visual recognition at night. The SUV is offered in two distinct styling packages: the chrome package caters to buyers who prefer a classic, understated look, while the black package comes fitted with a sporty body kit complete with gloss black wing mirror caps, black alloy wheels, and darkened exterior badging. Along the sides, clean, taut lines are paired with generous ground clearance and short front and rear overhangs, balancing approach and departure clearance with balanced proportions. The rear sports full-width LED taillights, a concealed exhaust setup, and an illuminated logo for a sleek, contemporary look.

In terms of dimensions, the Tharu XR measures 4,355 mm in length, 1,762 mm in width, and 1,605 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,651 mm; the mainstream version is slightly larger at 4,458 mm long, 1,841 mm wide, and 1,632 mm high, riding on a 2,680 mm wheelbase. For the 2026 model year, the "Breeze Green" exterior shade has been dropped, leaving "Moonlight White" and "Salt Grey" standard across the range, whilst mid-to-high-spec variants gain additional "Vibrant Blue" and "Youthful Pink" colour options.

Inside, the Tharu adopts Volkswagen's wraparound floating cockpit design concept. Higher-spec variants feature a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster paired with a 9.2- or 12-inch floating central touchscreen. A comprehensive array of physical buttons and switches is thoughtfully retained below the infotainment display, balancing modern digital tech with tactile usability. In terms of cabin materials, upper trims feature extensive soft-padded dashboard surfaces and leather upholstery.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 Tharu offers three powertrain configurations, catering to diverse driving needs from economical urban commuting to punchier, spirited driving.

The 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine (EA211) delivers 81 kW (110 PS) and 141 Nm of torque, paired with an Aisin 6-speed automatic gearbox (6AT). Renowned for its smooth power delivery and proven reliability, this setup returns a WLTC combined fuel consumption of 6.41 L/100 km.

The 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine (EA211 EVO II high-efficiency unit) produces 118 kW (160 PS) and 250 Nm of peak torque. It incorporates advanced technologies such as Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbocharging, 350-bar direct fuel injection, and Atmospheric Plasma Spray (APS) cylinder coatings, broadening maximum torque availability across 1,750–4,000 rpm. Mated to a 7-speed dry dual-clutch transmission (DQ200) capable of 200 ms shift times, it completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 8.8 seconds, with a frugal WLTC fuel consumption of just 5.7 L/100 km. All engine variants are compatible with RON 92 petrol.

The 2.0T turbocharged petrol engine (Gen 3 EA888) churns out 137 kW (186 PS) and 320 Nm of peak torque, paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission and Volkswagen's 4MOTION intelligent all-wheel-drive system. It provides 7 selectable drive modes, including Standard, Eco, Sport, Off-Road, and Snow.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinned by Volkswagen's modular MQB platform, the Tharu's suspension setup varies by version: the Tharu XR features front MacPherson struts paired with a rear torsion beam semi-independent setup; mid-to-high-spec mainstream variants upgrade to a four-link independent rear suspension with ultra-high-strength steel trailing arms and lower control arms. The German-tuned chassis delivers a planted, confident ride with well-contained body roll and sharp steering, giving it an agile, car-like driving feel. However, the suspension is tuned on the firmer side, resulting in noticeable feedback over road humps and rough surfaces. The electric power steering is featherlight at low speeds for effortless city manoeuvres, weighting up reassuringly at highway cruising speeds.

Cabin and Equipment

On the connectivity front, the Tharu runs on Volkswagen's MOS infotainment system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay, Baidu CarLife, and Huawei HiCar smartphone integration. High-spec models feature a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 12-inch floating central display, seamlessly merging tech appeal with daily practicality.

For comfort and convenience, the 2026 Tharu XR 300TSI Rui Xiang Edition has been upgraded with a standard 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat. The newly introduced 1.5L Rui Xiang Edition, sitting at the top of the 1.5L lineup, comes standard with the black styling pack, integrated leather sports seats, 6-way power driver's seat, heated front seats, a 10.3-inch digital instrument display, ambient lighting, dual-zone automatic climate control, and 15W Qi wireless smartphone charging. A 1.17-square-metre panoramic glass sunroof (blocking 99% of UV rays) is fitted as standard across the range. Boot capacity stands at 445 litres, expanding to 1,443 litres with the rear seats folded flat.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the 2026 Tharu comes standard with 6 airbags across the lineup. The body structure utilises high-strength steel in a robust safety cage design, providing solid passive crash protection.

Active safety is handled by the IQ.Drive suite, delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance. Supported by 11 radar sensors and 2 cameras, the system integrates Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Change Assist, and Front Assist. Premium trims also benefit from IQ.Parking and a 360-degree surround-view camera, while the IQ.Light matrix LED headlamps automatically adapt brightness and beam pattern according to driving conditions. It is worth noting that while competent, the system's operational smoothness and reaction speed lag behind dedicated new-energy EV brands, functioning best as a driver aid rather than a fully autonomous system.

Market Performance and Verdict

The Tharu remains one of the most consistent sales performers in China's joint-venture compact SUV segment. In June 2025, the Tharu family achieved deliveries of 13,935 units, peaking at 18,581 units in a single month during 2025. In March 2026, it recorded 8,198 units (ranking 15th in the compact SUV segment), followed by 6,289 units in April 2026, topping the German compact SUV sales charts. Cumulative sales of the Tharu family have now surpassed 900,000 units.

Automotive media reviews point to the Tharu's core strengths in its planted, confidence-inspiring German chassis dynamics, proven and durable EA211/EA888 powertrains, and the longstanding quality reputation and residual value associated with the Volkswagen badge. The 2026 model's promotional pricing strategy, lowering the entry point to RM79,900, allows a joint-venture model to compete head-on in the core price bracket of Chinese domestic brands. On the downside, entry-level variants make do with a less compliant rear torsion beam suspension; the cabin exhibits noticeable hard plastics compared to generously trimmed domestic rivals at the same price point; the spare tyre has been replaced across the range with a tyre repair sealant and inflator kit; and the 7-speed dry dual-clutch transmission can feel slightly jerky in stop-and-go traffic. Overall, as a compact SUV delivering "German engineering at an accessible price", the 2026 Tharu continues to secure a solid foothold in the fiercely contested SUV market through pragmatic updates and highly competitive pricing.
