Brand Overview

Truong Hai Group Corporation (commonly known by its acronym THACO, or 长海汽车 in Chinese) is the largest and most prominent privately owned automotive conglomerate in Vietnam. Founded in 1997 by the prominent Vietnamese industrialist Tran Ba Duong, the corporation is headquartered in Ho Chi Minh City, while its massive, state-of-the-art manufacturing core is located within the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone in Quang Nam Province. THACO is the undisputed market leader in the Vietnamese automotive industry, controlling a massive share of both the consumer passenger car and commercial vehicle markets.

THACO occupies a highly unique and dominant position within the Southeast Asian automotive ecosystem. Rather than operating purely as a proprietary car designer, THACO functions as a world-class completely knocked-down (CKD) manufacturing hub, exclusive distributor, and strategic partner for multiple elite global automotive brands, alongside engineering its own highly successful line of domestic commercial buses and trucks.

The conglomerate operates through THACO AUTO, its dedicated automotive division, which manages a sprawling industrial park in Chu Lai that features specialised assembly plants, powertrain factories, and specialized automotive component facilities. Beyond vehicle assembly, THACO’s massive corporate footprint has diversified into a multi-industry empire spanning high-tech agriculture (THACO AGRI), industrial logistics (THACO INDUSTRIES), residential real estate development (THADICO), and retail services (THISO).

Development History

The Trading Beginnings and Commercial Vehicle Success (1997–2002)

The origins of the company date back to 1997 in Dong Nai Province, where Tran Ba Duong established the Truong Hai Automobile Company. Initially, the firm operated as a modest commercial enterprise focused on the repair, trading, and distribution of used cars and light commercial trucks imported from overseas.

Recognising that Vietnam's rapid post-war economic development and urbanization required a reliable supply of transport infrastructure, the company quickly pivoted toward manufacturing. In 2000, THACO opened its first light commercial truck assembly factory in Bien Hoa, successfully manufacturing highly affordable, durable cargo trucks that became an instant commercial success among regional small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

The Chu Lai Megaproject and Global Alliances (2003–2017)

In 2003, following a visionary strategic push backed by the Vietnamese government, THACO made a high-stakes investment by breaking ground on the Chu Lai-Truong Hai Automotive Industrial Park in a then-impoverished coastal region of Quang Nam Province. This facility would evolve into one of the largest and most advanced automotive manufacturing complexes in Southeast Asia.

To accelerate its passenger vehicle manufacturing capabilities, THACO forged deep strategic joint ventures and licensing agreements with global automotive giants. The group established dedicated, automated assembly lines to mass-produce Kia vehicles in 2007, followed by a major manufacturing and design partnership with Mazda in 2011, and a comprehensive assembly agreement with France's Peugeot in 2013. By building vehicles locally to international quality standards, THACO effectively circumvented high import tariffs, making modern passenger cars highly accessible to the burgeoning Vietnamese middle class.

Luxury Expansion and Modern Global Export Era (2018–Present)

In 2018, THACO secured absolute dominance across all vehicle segments by acquiring the exclusive importation, distribution, and assembly rights for BMW, BMW Motorrad, and MINI in Vietnam (succeeding the insolvent Euro Auto). By December 2022, THACO achieved a monumental milestone by commencing the formal localized CKD assembly of premium luxury vehicles like the BMW 3-Series, 5-Series, X3, and X5 right inside its Chu Lai facility.

Concurrently, THACO has transformed into a critical export engine for the Vietnamese economy. Leveraging the tariff-free trade lanes of the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) and major global trade pacts, THACO has expanded its international footprint, exporting locally engineered public transit buses, specialized heavy-duty semi-trailers, and high-quality automotive components to international markets, including Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore, Central Asia, and North America.

Product Portfolio

THACO AUTO’s highly diversified product portfolio spans mass-market passenger cars, premium luxury vehicles, and heavy-duty industrial logistics machinery:

Mass-Market Passenger Cars (Kia & Mazda): The high-volume crown jewels of THACO’s consumer division. Highly popular models like the Kia Sonet, Seltos, Carnival, alongside the Mazda 3, CX-5, and CX-8 are assembled in Chu Lai, consistently dominating Vietnam’s annual best-selling vehicle charts due to their competitive pricing and localized feature configurations.

Premium Luxury Division (BMW & Peugeot): THACO manages the comprehensive retail operations, high-end servicing, and local CKD assembly for BMW passenger cars and SUVs, alongside running the exclusive nationwide sales networks for the Peugeot 2008, 3008, and 5008 crossover lineups.

THACO Buses: A testament to the group’s independent engineering prowess. THACO’s self-developed, high-comfort commercial coaches, long-distance sleeper buses, and clean-diesel or electric city transit buses are heavily deployed by public transit agencies and private tour operators across Southeast Asia.

Commercial Trucks & Specialised Vehicles: In collaboration with global heavy-industry leaders like Foton Motor, Mitsubishi Fuso, and Hyundai, THACO manufactures an expansive range of light-to-heavy-duty logistics trucks, dump trucks, and industrial tractor units.

THACO Industries (Mechanical & Semi-Trailers): A highly specialized manufacturing arm that builds high-specification skeletal and flatbed semi-trailers, directly exporting thousands of units to heavy logistics providers in the United States and European markets.
