2026-10-11 14:00:01

Model Overview

The Toyota bZ4X is Toyota's first global strategic all-electric SUV built on the dedicated e-TNGA EV platform. Officially launched in 2022, it marked the formal kick-off of Toyota's full electrification transition. "bZ" stands for "Beyond Zero", representing Toyota's vision towards a carbon-neutral future. Positioned as a mid-size all-electric SUV, it was introduced for localized production and sales in China via FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota respectively. In 2025, Toyota rolled out a mid-life facelift for the bZ4X, rebranded simply as the "Toyota bZ" in overseas markets, while China-built models received concurrent upgrades in operating range and styling. In the Chinese market, the refreshed GAC Toyota bZ4X is expected to offer two range variants, delivering CLTC-rated ranges of 721 km and 752 km respectively. Its key rivals include mainstream electric SUVs such as the Volkswagen ID.4 and Tesla Model Y.

Design Language

Visually, the refreshed bZ4X retains the design identity of Toyota's electric vehicle family alongside notable upgrades. Up front, it sports a redesigned split LED headlamp cluster, featuring upper C-shaped daytime running lights linked by a full-width light bar, paired with a closed-off grille and a multi-slat lower bumper for a more futuristic, sculpted look. Down the sides, it retains its muscular wheel arches, conventional door handles, and front fender charging port. Notably, the previous unpainted black wheel arch cladding has been replaced with a body-coloured finish, lending it a much cleaner aesthetic. At the rear, the SUV continues with full-width taillights and a split roof spoiler, now joined by new rear bumper reflectors to boost night-time visibility. Dimensionally, the bZ4X measures 4,690 mm in length, 1,860 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm.

Inside, the updated bZ4X adopts a newly styled horizontal dashboard layout, integrated with full-width air-conditioning vents that visually broaden cabin width. It comes equipped as standard with a 14-inch floating infotainment touchscreen and a 7-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The centre console has also been reconfigured, placing a wireless smartphone charging pad up front while retaining physical knobs and buttons behind it for a balanced blend of modern tech and tactile usability. The seats are available in grey and black colour themes, with enlarged rear headrests for improved passenger comfort. A 6-speaker audio setup comes standard, with an optional 9-speaker JBL Premium sound system on offer.

Powertrain and Performance

The refreshed bZ4X provides various powertrain setups tailored to different markets. Regulatory filings for the China-spec model reveal that the single-motor variant outputs a maximum of 163 kW (around 221 hp) with a top speed of 160 km/h. Overseas markets benefit from a wider selection, including a single-motor standard-output variant (123 kW with a 57.7 kWh battery), a single-motor high-output variant (165 kW with a 73.1 kWh battery), and a dual-motor AWD variant (252 kW with a 73.1 kWh battery). The dual-motor AWD flagship develops a combined 338 hp, completing the 0-60 mph sprint in just 4.9 seconds.

On the battery front, the new China-spec bZ4X is fitted with a 74.7 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, providing two CLTC range ratings of 721 km and 752 km. Meanwhile, the overseas model delivers a maximum WLTP-rated range of up to 573 km—a 12% improvement over its predecessor. In terms of charging capabilities, an upgraded 22 kW on-board AC charger and a battery pre-conditioning system have been added to significantly reduce charging times. Additionally, the dual-motor variant sees its braked towing capacity upgraded to 1.5 tonnes.

Chassis and Handling

Underpinned by Toyota's dedicated e-TNGA EV architecture, the bZ4X integrates its battery pack directly into the floor structure, lowering the centre of gravity while improving torsional rigidity. Suspension is handled by a front MacPherson strut and rear double-wishbone independent setup. Available in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, the SUV boasts a tight turning radius of 5.6 metres for effortless urban manoeuvrability. Drive Mode Select is fitted as standard across all variants.

Cabin and Features

Configured as a 5-seater, the bZ4X makes full use of its 2,850 mm wheelbase to deliver generous rear legroom and passenger comfort. While exact boot volume figures have not been detailed, the rear seats feature a 60:40 split-folding mechanism to cater to various cargo needs. In terms of creature comforts, the vehicle comes equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air-con vents, an air purification system, and heated front seats. The front seats benefit from multi-way power adjustment with driver's lumbar support, trimmed in a combo of leather and fabric upholstery. Other convenience amenities include a hands-free powered tailgate, wireless smartphone charging, and a 7-inch digital instrument display.

Safety and Intelligent Driving

Safety-wise, the bZ4X is equipped as standard across the range with the full Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Key functions include Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Lane Departure Alert (LDA), Pre-Collision System / Autonomous Emergency Braking (PCS/AEB with pedestrian detection), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Higher-spec variants add Traffic Jam Assist and Lane Change Assist, edging towards Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities. Other driving aids include a 360-degree panoramic view monitor, front and rear parking sensors, plus an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold. Passive safety is well-catered for with 8 airbags fitted as standard (front, side, front/rear curtain, and driver's knee airbag), alongside Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC).

Market Performance and Evaluation

As Toyota's pioneer global electric SUV, the bZ4X made its local debut in China in 2022. With its 2025 mid-life refresh, the SUV has received comprehensive improvements spanning exterior styling, cabin appointments, and driving range. The China-spec version now boasts an impressive CLTC range of up to 752 km, putting it among the segment leaders among joint-venture EV offerings. In overseas markets, prices start from around RM220,000. In comparison, key rivals like the Volkswagen ID.4 deliver around 600 km (CLTC), while the entry-level Tesla Model Y RWD offers around 554 km, giving the updated bZ4X a distinct edge on paper. The refined styling, more practical cabin, and enhanced ADAS suite undeniably sharpen the bZ4X's competitive edge. Nonetheless, in an increasingly contested EV SUV market, whether Toyota's proven brand cachet combined with this thorough mid-cycle update will translate into sustained commercial success will ultimately be proven by post-launch sales figures.
