Model Overview

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is an all-new fully electric compact SUV introduced by Toyota for the European and Southeast Asian markets. Developed as a sister model to the Suzuki e Vitara, it is built on a dedicated EV platform jointly engineered by Toyota, Suzuki, and Daihatsu. Official photos of the vehicle were released in December 2024 before making its public debut at the Brussels Motor Show in January 2025, followed by its rollout in overseas markets within the same year. Sized between the Toyota Yaris Cross and C-HR, the Urban Cruiser is positioned as an entry-level EV SUV, going up against rivals such as the Hyundai Kona Electric and Jeep Avenger. The model is currently aimed primarily at Europe, Southeast Asia, and Taiwan, China markets, and has yet to be officially introduced to Mainland China. In Germany, the model starts from €31,990 (approx. RM250,000); the UK market starts at £29,995; while in Taiwan, China, it is priced at NT$1,270,000 (approx. RM285,000).

Design Language

The Urban Cruiser incorporates Toyota's latest 'Hammerhead' family front fascia design, with wide front proportions delivering a confident road presence. The front end features signature C-shaped LED headlamps linked by a gloss black trim panel, complemented by a gloss black skid plate on the lower bumper for a chic, urban aesthetic. Along the sides, muscular character lines, prominent black wheel arch cladding, and lower door mouldings enhance its rugged SUV stance, while the rear door handles are integrated into the rear window trim. Round the back, a full-width LED tail lamp bar with a distinctive grid-style lighting signature echoes the front design language. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,285 mm in length, 1,800 mm in width, and 1,635-1,640 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm and a tight turning radius of just 5.2 metres for effortless city driving.

Inside, the Urban Cruiser features an integrated dual-screen cockpit layout comprising a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch floating central touchscreen. The dashboard is trimmed extensively in brown soft-touch materials, paired with 12-colour ambient lighting to create an inviting, tech-focused cabin ambience. Other interior appointments include a two-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel, a rotary electronic gear selector, leather-and-fabric combination upholstery, and an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat.

Powertrain & Performance

The Urban Cruiser is available with two battery capacities and three powertrain configurations:

Variant Battery Capacity Drivetrain Max System Output Max System Torque WLTP Range
Entry Variant 49 kWh FWD 106 kW (approx. 144 PS) 189 Nm 344 km
Mid-spec Variant 61 kWh FWD 128 kW (approx. 174 PS) 189 Nm 426 km
Top-spec Variant 61 kWh AWD 135 kW (approx. 184 PS) 300 Nm 395-400 km

The traction battery utilises a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry supplied by BYD, offering enhanced thermal stability and a longer cycle life. The 61 kWh variant achieves a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.7 seconds, with a top speed of around 150 km/h. DC fast charging is supported, taking approximately 45 minutes for a 10% to 80% charge; an 11 kW AC charger completes a 15% to 100% charge in about 6 hours[citation:13]. Under the NEDC cycle, driving range is rated at up to 483 km.

Chassis & Handling

The Urban Cruiser is underpinned by the HEARTECT-e dedicated EV platform co-developed by Toyota and Suzuki, where the battery pack serves as a structural member within the chassis to lower the centre of gravity and enhance torsional rigidity. The suspension setup comprises a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension.

The all-wheel-drive variant features Toyota's ALLGRIP-e electric AWD system, which powers the rear wheels via a dedicated rear-axle motor (maximum output 48 kW), offering two selectable modes: AUTO and TRAIL. Single-motor FWD variants offer three drive modes: Normal, Sport, and Snow; the AWD variant adds Auto and Trail modes. Drivers can also adjust regenerative braking across three levels using the steering wheel paddle shifters.

Cabin & Equipment

The Urban Cruiser features a 5-seater layout, with rear seats capable of sliding fore and aft by up to 160 mm alongside backrest angle adjustment, and supports a 40:20:40 split-folding configuration. Boot capacity stands at 238-310 litres in standard setup (depending on the rear seat position), expanding up to 562-566 litres with the rear seats fully folded flat.

In terms of comfort and convenience features, the vehicle is equipped with single-zone automatic climate control (with a heat pump system), heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless smartphone charging, and a fixed glass roof. The audio setup comes standard with a 9-speaker JBL Premium Sound System, delivering high-fidelity audio. The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while vehicle status checks and climate pre-conditioning can be operated remotely via the MyToyota mobile app.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

The Urban Cruiser comes standard across the lineup with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, including:

For passive safety, the vehicle is fitted with 7 SRS airbags (including a driver's knee airbag) as standard. Battery safety is reinforced by an external frame and side-impact protection structures, effectively safeguarding the pack in the event of a collision.

Market Performance & Reception

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is Toyota's second all-electric model launched in the European market, marking a crucial step in the brand's electrification strategy. In January 2026, the vehicle placed 3rd in overall sales in the Norwegian automotive market, signalling strong initial market reception. In international media reviews, the Urban Cruiser earned praise for its generous cabin room derived from the 2,700 mm wheelbase, flexible sliding rear seats, and the durability of its LFP battery, though its ~70 kW DC fast charging rate remains unremarkable in this segment[citation:13]. In Taiwan, China, only the 61 kWh single-motor FWD variant was introduced at NT$1,270,000—a narrow price gap of just NT$10,000 compared to the larger bZ4X—which sparked market discussion regarding its pricing strategy. As a twin model to the Suzuki e Vitara, both vehicles share the same platform and EV powertrain while being differentiated through distinct exterior styling and interior details.
