Toyota Yaris

2026-09-28 00:00:01

Toyota Yaris is a global strategic model under Toyota, positioned as a compact hatchback. Spearheaded by the Toyota Europe ED2 Design Centre, the Yaris had achieved cumulative global sales of over 3 million units by 2008 following its launch in 1999. In the Chinese market, the Yaris was produced and sold by GAC Toyota, serving as the only compact hatchback bearing the Toyota badge in China at the time. The recommended retail price range for the new car was RM87,000 to RM125,600. In 2011, production of the Yaris was discontinued in Mainland China and Taiwan. Primary competitors of the Yaris included models like the Honda Fit.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the Yaris was led by the Toyota Europe ED2 Design Centre. The front fascia features a honeycomb front grille. The new-generation model retains its hatchback profile, boasting a wide lower front grille accented with dot-matrix chrome inserts and prominent aero lips on both sides and beneath the front bumper, delivering a youthful and sporty aesthetic. The side profile carries soft, rounded character lines with sculpted details that lend a muscular stance. In terms of dimensions, the early Chinese market version measured 3,915 mm long, 1,645 mm wide, and 1,545 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,460 mm; the 2020 international model measures 4,046 mm long, 1,700 mm wide, and 1,495 mm tall, with a 2,550 mm wheelbase. Boot capacity stands at 318 litres. Inside, the Yaris adopts a centrally mounted digital instrument cluster layout. The interior combines black-and-grey two-tone sport seats with silver trim highlights across its storage areas, striking a neat balance between practicality and styling. More than 20 storage compartments are thoughtfully arranged throughout the cabin. The new-generation model retains a generous array of physical buttons, preserving the tactile charm of the internal combustion engine era.

Powertrain and Performance

In the Chinese market, the Yaris offered multiple powertrain options, powered by 1.3L and 1.6L Dual VVT-i naturally aspirated petrol engines. Among them, the 1.6L variant generated a maximum power output of 96 kW. The transmission was paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox. Combined fuel consumption ranged between 5.3 and 9.3 litres per 100 km. In Japan and other overseas markets, the Yaris is also available with a 1.0L three-cylinder engine (69 hp), a 1.5L three-cylinder manual variant (120 hp), and a 1.5L hybrid system (combined output of 116 hp). The hot-hatch GR Yaris is powered by a 1.6T three-cylinder turbocharged engine producing a maximum power of 304 hp (approx. 224 kW), paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and an all-wheel drive system, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. The GR Yaris carried a starting price in Japan equivalent to around RM182,000, while parallel import units in China were priced at approximately RM399,800.

Chassis and Handling

The Yaris adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout. Braking is handled by front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes. The steering system utilises an electric power steering (EPS) setup, with chassis tuning biased towards urban agility and fuel economy. Meanwhile, the high-performance GR version features an all-wheel-drive system alongside a motorsport-tuned chassis, complete with suspension and steering setups engineered specifically for driver engagement.

Cabin and Equipment

Cabin equipment on the Yaris is primarily tailored to meet everyday commuting needs. The interior offers over 20 storage spaces, complemented by a 318-litre boot capacity. The rear seats feature a 60:40 split-folding design. The latest-generation model comes standard with an 8-inch central touchscreen infotainment unit, upgraded to a 10.5-inch screen on higher variants. Selected variants are fitted with a 7-inch full-colour digital instrument cluster. Higher-spec grades also support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Seats are finished in fabric upholstery. The Yaris Cross variant elevates cabin ambiance with piano black trim and embossed door cards, adding a touch of premium flair.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety is one of the key selling points of the Yaris. It is engineered around Toyota's GOA high-rigidity safety body structure. Active safety features include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Brake Assist (BA). Passive safety equipment comprises dual front SRS airbags, front side SRS airbags, curtain SRS airbags, and front three-point ELR seatbelts with pre-tensioners. The Yaris scored a 5-star safety rating in Euro NCAP crash tests. The overseas-spec Yaris Cross comes standard with 6 airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control System, and Hill-start Assist Control across the range. Furthermore, the updated Yaris Cross is equipped with Toyota's latest T-Mate driver assistance system and Toyota Safety Sense suite.

Market Performance and Reception

The Yaris has enjoyed tremendous success across global markets. As Toyota's core global strategic model, cumulative worldwide sales exceeded 3 million units by 2008. Cumulative sales in the European market alone reached 1.6 million units. Globally, cumulative sales have surpassed the 10-million-unit mark. In the Chinese market, however, the Yaris had a less favourable run, leading to its official discontinuation in Mainland China and Taiwan in 2011. Industry analyses noted that key reasons for its discontinuation in China included misaligned product positioning relative to local buyer preferences, de-specced equipment compared to international versions, and NVH insulation alongside cabin practicality that lagged behind key segment rivals. In June 2023, Toyota issued a recall for over 590,000 units of the 2019–2023 Yaris due to component defects. As a cornerstone of Toyota's global compact car strategy, the Yaris has earned widespread acclaim worldwide for its stellar fuel efficiency, dependable quality, and nimble dimensions. In 2026, Toyota rolled out an annual model update for the Yaris in the Japanese market; the fifth-generation model slated for 2027 is expected to offer a versatile powertrain line-up comprising internal combustion, hybrid, and fully electric setups.
