2026-10-08 15:50:00

Model Overview

The Toyota GR Supra stands as the flagship rear-wheel-drive sports coupe under Toyota's GR performance stable and represents the fifth generation (chassis code A90/J29) of the iconic "Bull Demon King" Supra lineage. Originating in 1978, the Supra nameplate spanned four generations before being retired in 2002. In 2014, Toyota unveiled the FT-1 Concept at the North American International Auto Show, paving the way for the Supra's eventual rebirth. Strongly championed by Chairman Akio Toyoda, Toyota partnered with BMW to officially resurrect the fifth-generation Supra in 2019 under the GAZOO Racing motorsport banner, proudly bearing the "GR" badge. As of June 2026, the 2026 GR Supra is available in three variant trims: 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and the MkV Final Edition. Pricing starts from 58,300 to 69,745 USD in the US market; from 69,685 CAD in Canada; and from approximately 105,295 AUD in Australia (excluding on-the-road costs). In Taiwan, China, the GR Supra 3.0T Premium is tagged with a pre-sale price of RM2,580,000. The sports coupe is assembled at the Magna Steyr facility in Graz, Austria.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the GR Supra stays faithful to the design language first showcased on the 2014 FT-1 Concept. The front fascia features an aggressive three-section lower intake grille paired with sharp six-unit LED headlamps and an F1-inspired front bumper nose cone. The side profile highlights a muscular, athletic silhouette characterised by a sweeping fastback roofline and flared rear haunches. The wide air intake and signature double-bubble roof not only deliver distinct visual character, but also effectively reduce aerodynamic drag while enhancing high-speed downforce. At the rear, the car sports an integrated ducktail boot spoiler along with dual exhaust tailpipes. The 2026 model year offers various exterior colour options, including Absolute Zero, Nocturnal, and Renaissance Red 2.0.

In terms of dimensions, the coupe measures 4,381 mm in length, 1,867 mm in width, and 1,310 mm in height. Drawing inspiration from the GR Supra GT4 EVO2 race car, the 2026 MkV Final Edition features a matte black finish with contrasting red wing mirrors, matched with a matte rear spoiler and GR emblems on the side skirts. Inside, the GR Supra exhibits strong BMW architecture—headlined by a free-standing central touchscreen, a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, and a fully digital instrument cluster. The 2026 model comes standard with carbon-fibre interior trim and aluminium door sill scuff plates. The MkV Final Edition steps up with Recaro carbon-fibre bucket seats upholstered in a combination of Alcantara and genuine leather with red contrast stitching, finished with red accent detailing on the gear selector.

Powertrain and Performance

The GR Supra offers two powertrain choices: 2.0T and 3.0T. The 2.0T variant is powered by a BMW B48 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 145 kW (197 PS) and 320 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission with manual mode to deliver a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds. The 3.0T variant is equipped with a BMW B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six powerplant, bespoke-tuned by Toyota engineers with dedicated exhaust and piston calibrations. For the 2026 model year, the 3.0T unit delivers 382 hp (285 kW) and 368–369 lb-ft (approx. 499–500 Nm) of torque. Transmission options include an 8-speed automatic transmission and a 6-speed intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT), the latter available as a no-cost option. The 8-speed automatic variant completes the century sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds (4.3 seconds for Taiwan market specifications). It returns an EPA-rated combined fuel economy of 25 mpg (approx. 9.4 L/100 km). The flagship MkV Final Edition features an uprated B58 engine, boosting maximum output to 320 kW and peak torque to 570 Nm.

Chassis and Handling

The GR Supra is engineered on a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) platform with a near-perfect 50:50 front-to-rear weight distribution. The front suspension utilises a double-joint spring-strut layout (a MacPherson strut derivative) where two individual control arms replace the traditional lower wishbone, while the rear features a multi-link setup. The underbody is aerodynamically flat, with vital mechanical components protected by aluminium underguards. The 2026 model comes standard with Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), an active rear limited-slip differential (LSD), front strut tower braces, and hollow anti-roll bars. Braking hardware consists of four-piston Brembo front calipers clamping onto 348 mm ventilated discs. A newly introduced Hairpin+ function for the 2026 model optimizes handling performance through tight bends. The MkV Final Edition is upgraded with a KW 16-way adjustable coilover suspension system (offering independent adjustment of 16-stage rebound and 12-stage compression damping) alongside revised front and rear wheel camber angles. Steering duties are handled by a variable-ratio electric power steering (EPS) system, with Launch Control fitted as standard across the range.

Cabin and Equipment

The GR Supra adopts a pure two-seater cockpit arrangement. For seating, 14-way power-adjustable heated sports seats with driver-side memory are standard fitment. The 3.0 variant features black Alcantara and leather combination upholstery, a 10-speaker sound system, and an 8.8-inch central touchscreen; the 3.0 Premium upgrades to a 12-speaker JBL premium sound system and adds a Head-Up Display (HUD). The infotainment system supports wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and satellite navigation. Across the lineup, standard equipment includes the Toyota Smart Entry & Push Start System, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment. Boot space is rated at 10.2 cubic feet (approx. 289 litres). The MkV Final Edition is further enhanced with a carbon-fibre centre console and Alcantara trim inserts.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety equipment, the GR Supra comes fitted with dual front airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and a driver's knee airbag. Standard active safety items include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control (TRC), Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and ISOFIX child seat anchor points. On the driver assistance front, the GR Supra is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 active safety suite. Core functionalities include Pre-Collision System (PCS with Autonomous Emergency Braking), Lane Departure Warning and Assist, Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), and Automatic High Beam (AHB). Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is offered as an option on select trim levels. This comprehensive suite of active and passive safety systems allows the GR Supra to achieve an ideal balance between everyday road usability and aggressive track driving.

Market Performance and Legacy

Since its revival in 2019, the GR Supra has garnered massive acclaim from sports car enthusiasts worldwide. By 2025, cumulative sales in the US market surpassed 24,000 units, with global sales tallying around 50,000 units. By comparison, its platform sibling, the BMW Z4, recorded around 13,000 units over the same timeframe. However, the GR Supra experienced a sales contraction in the US in 2025—registering just 1,231 units in the first seven months, representing a 17.7% year-on-year drop. In Europe, only 442 units were sold throughout 2024, making it Toyota's lowest-volume model in the region. Toyota has officially confirmed that the A90 Supra will conclude production in March 2026, with the MkV Final Edition serving as its curtain call in a limited run of 300 units for the Japanese and European markets. The next-generation GR Supra is expected to part ways with BMW, adopting an in-house developed Toyota 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-hybrid powertrain instead. From the original 1978 Celica Supra to the 2026 MkV Final Edition, the Supra has scripted a legendary chapter in Japanese sports car history for nearly half a century. While the A90 generation drew its share of debate over its BMW partnership, its clear sales dominance over the Z4 proves that Akio Toyoda's conviction to "bring it back at all costs" was entirely justified—not only keeping the revered "Bull Demon King" heritage alive, but also leaving behind an unforgettable swan song for pure rear-wheel-drive petrol sports cars on the eve of full electrification.
