Model Overview

The Suzuki Hustler is a Kei-car crossover SUV produced by Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation. Since its debut in 2014, it has enjoyed enduring market success thanks to its distinct positioning that combines rugged SUV styling with Kei-car practicality. The first-generation Hustler was officially launched in Japan in January 2014, blending elements of a tall-roof Kei wagon with an SUV. The second-generation model debuted in January 2020, underpinned by Suzuki's new-generation HEARTECT lightweight and high-rigidity platform. As of 2026, the model on sale is the May 2026 facelifted version of the second generation. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 3,395 × 1,475 × 1,665 (1,680) mm in length, width, and height respectively, with a wheelbase of 2,425 mm. Cumulative domestic sales in Japan have crossed 1,000,000 units as of March 2026 since its introduction. Pricing-wise, following the 2026 facelift, the Hustler is priced between JPY 1,599,400 and JPY 1,971,200 (approximately RM80,000 to RM100,000), while the Hustler Tough Wild rugged variant retails between JPY 1,835,900 and JPY 2,048,200.
Design Language
The Hustler's exterior styling revolves around the core philosophy of "More Fun! More Exciting!! A More Active Kei Crossover". Up front, it features signature round LED headlamps paired with a boxy front grille. The raised bonnet line and upright A-pillars deliver a solid, muscular front fascia. High ground clearance and large-diameter tyres further accentuate its rugged SUV stance. For the 2026 facelift, the standard Hustler receives a newly designed large inverted-trapezoidal grille with fluorescent yellow highlights; the Tough Wild variant adopts a chunky, block-pattern dedicated radiator grille with prominent "SUZUKI" block lettering for an even tougher aesthetic. The rear tailgate emblem now features a fresh design crafted from resin material. In terms of exterior colours, the 2026 update introduces two new shades: "Fusion Yellow Pearl Metallic" and "Woodland Khaki Metallic". The standard model is available in 5 monotone and 9 two-tone options across 14 colour schemes, while the Tough Wild offers 6 colour options.
Inside, the cabin employs a signature triple-pod coloured dashboard trim to project a rugged yet functional outdoor aesthetic. A 4.2-inch colour LCD multi-info instrument display comes standard. For the 2026 facelift, the HYBRID X and HYBRID X Turbo variants gain a new Gun Metal dashboard trim finish alongside brown seat accent detailing. The Tough Wild edition is equipped with water-repellent fabric upholstery and door trims, making it exceptionally easy to clean after outdoor excursions.
Powertrain & Performance
The Hustler range is powered by a 660cc inline three-cylinder petrol engine paired with a mild-hybrid system (ISG - Integrated Starter Generator) as standard. Both naturally aspirated and turbocharged options are available:
Naturally Aspirated Variant: Powered by the R06D engine, producing a maximum output of 36 kW (approx. 49 PS).
Turbocharged Variant: Powered by the R06A engine, delivering a maximum output of 47 kW (approx. 64 PS) and an estimated peak torque of over 95 Nm.
Power is sent through a CVT automatic gearbox across the board, with drivetrain choices of front-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive (4WD). Fuel efficiency on the WLTC cycle reaches up to 24.3 km/L (approx. 4.1 L/100km) for the naturally aspirated 2WD model, and 22.4 km/L (approx. 4.5 L/100km) for the turbo 4WD variant. In terms of kerb weight, the range-topping turbo 4WD model weighs in at around 980 kg. The mild-hybrid ISG motor provides electric torque assist off the line and during acceleration, effectively smoothing out low-rpm lag inherent to small-displacement three-cylinder powertrains.
Chassis & Handling
Built on Suzuki's HEARTECT lightweight and high-rigidity platform, the second-generation Hustler achieves lower kerb weight alongside enhanced structural rigidity. Suspension duties are handled by front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam setup. Thanks to its compact Kei-car proportions, the Hustler boasts a tight turning radius of just 4.6 m, offering effortless manoeuvrability in narrow urban streets and multi-storey car parks. Off-road capability is supported by a 28-degree approach angle and a 46-degree departure angle. The 2026 update brings retuned steering for smoother self-centering when exiting junction turns, as well as sharper highway steering response. It also comes equipped with an evolved Active Cornering Support system, which applies subtle braking to the inner wheels during cornering to sharpen turn-in and suppress understeer. An Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold is now standard across the entire range.
Cabin & Practicality
Despite an overall length of under 3.4 metres, the combination of upright A-pillars and a boxy silhouette delivers generous passenger room for four adults, offering ample, unhindered headroom in both rows. The rear seats fold completely flat to create a car-camping deck, accommodating two sleeping adults when paired with official Suzuki camping mattresses. The cabin features a standard 4.2-inch colour LCD instrument cluster. The entire Hustler range also gets Suzuki Connect telematics services as standard, while the Tough Wild edition comes factory-fitted with functional roof rails.
Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
The 2026 facelift brings significant enhancements to the Hustler's safety suite. Utilising a setup comprising a millimetre-wave radar and a monocular camera, it features the advanced autonomous emergency braking system "Dual Sensor Brake Support II" , capable of detecting vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists.
On the active safety front, several features make their debut on a Suzuki Kei-car:
Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) are now standard equipment across all variants for the first time on a Suzuki Kei model.
All-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) (with stop-and-go function) and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) come standard across the range.
An Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold is fitted as standard equipment across all variants.
Market Performance & Editorial Verdict
Ever since its arrival in 2014, the Suzuki Hustler has remained a consistent best-seller in the Japanese Kei-car segment. According to sales figures released by the Japan Mini Vehicles Association for April 2026, the Hustler maintained a strong 5th position overall. In 2025, Suzuki recorded a 10.9% year-on-year sales growth driven by strong demand for its Kei lineup, including the Spacia and Hustler. As of March 2026, the Hustler nameplate has achieved cumulative domestic sales of over 1,000,000 units in Japan. The May 2026 facelift—featuring a refreshed grille, 14 exterior colourways, and comprehensive ADAS upgrades (BSM, All-Speed ACC, LKA)—further solidifies its benchmark status in the Kei crossover SUV niche.
In the Chinese market, due to Suzuki's official brand exit in 2018, the Hustler is only available via parallel import channels, preventing it from generating significant volume. Within its home segment, key rivals include the Daihatsu Tanto FunCross and the Mitsubishi Delica Mini. Combining authentic SUV ruggedness with the compact agility and clever packaging of a Kei car, the Suzuki Hustler continues to be a standout offering in the Japanese domestic market courtesy of its charming boxy styling, versatile cabin, efficient mild-hybrid powertrain, and fully upgraded safety tech.
