Solid Paint

Core Operating Principles and Technical Characteristics

Automotive solid paint (also referred to as plain paint or single-stage paint) is a conventional automotive topcoat formulated without metallic flakes or pearlescent mica particles. Its core formulation comprises a mixture of base colour paste, resin, and additives. In traditional refinishing and production processes, solid paint typically employs a two-pack (2K) system (where the base colour and hardener chemically react to cure) or a single-pack stoving/baking system. As it contains no metallic or pearl microparticles to refract light, ambient light strikes the resin layer directly and is reflected purely by the pigment layer, delivering a deep, solid, and highly saturated colour finish.

In terms of technical characteristics and structural performance, solid paint exhibits the following attributes:

Coating structure and clarity: Traditional solid paint finishes (such as vintage gloss black, white, and red) were typically applied with the colour coat exposed directly, or finished with a protective clear coat over the basecoat. Modern high-end solid paint finishes universally utilise a two-stage "basecoat + clear coat" application to significantly enhance UV protection and acid rain resistance.

Ease of repair and refinishing: Compared to metallic or pearl finishes, solid paint presents lower colour-matching complexity during touch-ups and panel resprays following minor scuffs or scratches, while also offering superior polishability and gloss restoration.

Global Market Application and Evolution

As one of the longest-standing paint types in automotive history, solid paint was once standard across early passenger cars and commercial vehicles. While metallic finishes, complex mica pearls, and tri-coat paints dominate today’s mainstream market, classic solid shades—such as pure white, piano black, and heritage racing reds on high-performance sports cars—continue to play a prominent role in modern production vehicle palettes.

In terms of technological advancements, solid paints are evolving with eco-friendly high-solid formulations, waterborne colour systems, and nano-crosslinking technology to enhance scratch resistance and weatherability. While retaining rich colour depth, modern solid paint formulations have completely overcome the notorious chalking, oxidation, and fading issues caused by prolonged UV exposure in older paint types.

Operating Specifications and Safety Limitations

It is strictly prohibited to carry out machine compounding or polishing on solid paint directly under harsh direct sunlight or on body panels that are hot to the touch. High surface temperatures cause the paint resin to soften, making it exceptionally prone to localised overheating, clear coat strike-through (burn-through), or stubborn buffer swirl marks under the high friction of a rotary polishing pad.

Solid paintwork requires regular maintenance using professional wax, paint sealants, or Paint Protection Film (PPF). Solid shades—especially pure whites and dark hues—are highly susceptible to environmental contaminants such as acid rain, bird droppings, tree sap, and intense UV rays. Without routine cleaning and adequate surface protection, the paint is prone to irreversible chemical etching, dullness, loss of gloss, or unsightly yellowing.
