2026-08-17 01:20:00

Shuanghuan Automobile (full name: Shijiazhuang Shuanghuan Automobile Co., Ltd.) was a former Chinese independent automobile brand, established in April 1988, with its headquarters located at 368 Victory North Street, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. The company focused primarily on the R&D and manufacturing of SUVs, micro vehicles, and commercial vehicles. It operated subsidiaries including stamping, seats, air conditioning, and Hongxing Automobile Manufacturing, with a total area of over 860 mu (approximately 57 hectares). Its independent brands included "Shuanghuan" and "Hongxing." Shuanghuan once carried the brand mission of "building good but affordable cars for the people." Its product line covered models such as the Laibao S‑RV, SCEO, and the Little Noble series, targeting the economy SUV market. The company was awarded titles such as "Hebei Province Key Protected Enterprise" and "High‑tech Enterprise." Its products passed ISO9000 and 3C certification, and its employee count exceeded 2,000.

Due to several models suspected of copying international brand designs, along with lagging technology R&D and declining sales, Shuanghuan Automobile had its passenger car production qualifications revoked by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2016. Production and sales were fully halted from 2017 onward, and by 2019, all models had completely exited the market.

Development History

The starting point of Shuanghuan Automobile can be traced back to April 1988. Veteran Zhao Zhigang opened an automobile repair and parts plant in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, mainly responsible for the maintenance, upkeep, and modification of military vehicles. The factory belonged to the Chinese People's Liberation Army 7420 Factory, having a special color of military enterprise private enterprise. Relying on the "Beijing Jeep 212" prototype and technical materials provided by the military, the factory transitioned from repair to complete vehicle manufacturing, producing light off-road vehicles imitating the Jeep 212. In 2000, Shuanghuan officially launched the "Shuanghuan Brand Multi-functional Business Car", successfully opening the market with its unique appearance and low-price strategy.

In 2003, Shuanghuan launched the Laibao S-RV, priced more than half lower than similar joint venture products. It became popular immediately upon launch. In 2004, national sales broke through 12,000 units, creating the highest sales peak since the factory was built. That same year, Shuanghuan launched a knock-off version "Shuanghuan 213". The appearance, from color to details, almost completely copied the Cherokee, even directly spraying "jeep" logos on the car body. In 2005, Shuanghuan launched the SCEO, with an overall shape highly similar to the BMW X5. In 2007, Shuanghuan released the Little Noble, with its overall design pointed out to be the "twin brother" of Mercedes-Benz Smart.

After the brief glory brought by multiple rounds of imitation shows, Shuanghuan's market performance began to deteriorate around 2008. Honda sued Shuanghuan Laibao S-RV for appearance infringement. After several years of legal bargaining, the Supreme People's Court finally ruled that Honda lost, but this lawsuit lasting several years consumed a large amount of resources of Shuanghuan. In the German market, the Shuanghuan CEO was ruled for infringement by the Munich Regional Court due to the appearance similarity to BMW X5, forced to stop sales in Germany, destroy inventory, and compensate BMW corresponding losses. The company never invested funds for forward R&D, long-term relying on copying strategy, product quality and market reputation continued to decline. Sales reached peak in 2006 then sharply declined. In 2012, Laibao S-RV announced production stop. That same year company after-sales service hotline could not be connected, official website latest news stopped updating in December 2013.

On February 29, 2016, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the "Catalog of Road Motor Vehicle Production Enterprises and Products (281st Batch)", revoking the passenger car production qualifications of 13 enterprises including Shuanghuan Automobile. Production stopped from the date of publication of the "Announcement", and sales stopped from January 1, 2017. Shuanghuan once tried to transform and survive through specialized vehicle qualifications, and sought cooperation in the new energy vehicle field, but ultimately failed to restore production vitality. As of 2019, all models under Shuanghuan Automobile have stopped production.

Product Lineup

Shuanghuan Automobile's product system is centered on SUVs and micro vehicles. Laibao S-RV was developed based on the Toyota Hilux pickup truck chassis, equipped with Toyota 491Q series 2.0L to 2.4L engines, equipped with 5-speed manual transmission. Vehicles cover multi-purpose models such as station wagons, police cars, prison cars, fire trucks, postal vehicles, etc. SCEO targets college graduate startup vehicles and white-collar family multi-purpose vehicles. Body size reaches 4710x1870x1820mm, wheelbase 2850mm, equipped with 2.0L Mitsubishi engine, maximum power 82kW, equipped with double wishbone independent front suspension and five-link rear suspension. Little Noble series body size 3010x1605x1600mm, wheelbase 2025mm, equipped with Suzuki 1.1L engine, maximum horsepower 67 hp. In addition, Shuanghuan also developed Laifu, Laiwang commercial vehicles and S-RV leisure travel vehicles, etc., products cover special vehicles such as police cars, fire trucks, etc.

Market Performance

Shuanghuan Automobile's market performance experienced a "case of a fleeting bloom". In 2004, Laibao S-RV national sales broke through 12,000 units. Sales reached peak in 2006 then sharply declined, by 2012 it was on the verge of stagnation. After 2008, with the domestic car market becoming more mature and consumption upgrade trends rising, consumer requirements for automobile products shifted from "cheap" to "quality". Shuanghuan's low-price strategy and poor quality reputation combined with negative public opinion, caused continuous damage to brand image. In 2007, SCEO passed European EEC certification, sold over 1,000 vehicles in Italy; Shuanghuan claimed its products were sold in Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia and other regions. However, in European and American high-end markets, Shuanghuan never managed to open up the situation. After Munich court ruled SCEO infringed BMW, its European export strategy suffered a fatal blow.

Core Technology

Shuanghuan Automobile has long relied on reverse engineering, mature chassis transplant, and low-cost mature engine solutions in product competition, lacking an independent forward R&D system, with weak technical strength. Laibao S-RV uses Toyota Hilux chassis technology and Toyota 491Q series engine, SCEO equipped with Mitsubishi technology engine, Little Noble equipped with Suzuki engine, core technology basically relies on external introduction. In terms of independent R&D, Shuanghuan only has a certain foundation in craft levels such as body mold development, but never formed independent capability in the three major assemblies of engine, gearbox, and chassis, and even more so in intelligent driving and new energy technology layout. Its promotion highlights such as "Armor Body Design" mostly remained at the marketing level, far from the technical accumulation of mainstream car companies.

Overseas Layout

Shuanghuan Automobile was one of the few earlier Chinese independent brands to attempt to explore the international market. In 2007, SCEO was about to enter the markets of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Netherlands. In August 2009, Shuanghuan built Africa's first complete vehicle factory in Sudan, a joint venture with Sudan GIAD MOTORS automobile company. Initially adopting SKD parts assembly, the goal was to gradually upgrade to CKD, hoping to use regional trade agreements to export products to neighboring countries. However, the expansion of overseas business did not form sustainable scaled achievements. In 2008, German Munich Regional Court ruled Shuanghuan CEO infringed BMW X5, German dealers were ordered to stop sales, destroy inventory in Germany and compensate BMW losses. This ruling not only caused Shuanghuan to exit the European market, but also caused brand trust in Shuanghuan to be greatly damaged in other overseas markets, and overseas export business shrank accordingly.

Future Outlook

Since Shuanghuan Automobile lost passenger car production qualifications in 2016 and fully stopped production in 2019, it no longer possesses the manufacturing and sales capability of traditional automobiles. The company once sought transformation opportunities in specialized vehicle production qualifications and new energy vehicle fields, and conducted negotiations with enterprises such as GAC, BAIC, and Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation on cooperation matters. It completed the production of the first batch of prototype vehicles in the new energy project cooperated with CRRC in Shijiazhuang Equipment Manufacturing Industrial Park, but ultimately none of them formed scaled substantial progress. From the perspective of the industry structure, Shuanghuan Automobile has become a landmark case of market-oriented elimination in China's automobile industry. As of early 2026, the Shuanghuan brand has substantively exited the Chinese automobile market. Its historical significance lies in demonstrating the inevitable outcome for car enterprises relying on copying in the wave of industrial upgrading, and also left profound thoughts for the industry regarding R&D investment, industrial policy, and brand building.
