SWM Tiger EDi

2026-09-28 05:30:00

The SWM Tiger EDi is a mid-size range-extender electric vehicle (EREV) seven-seater SUV rolled out by Shineray's SWM Motors. Serving as a hallmark model in the early phases of SWM's new energy transition, the Tiger EDi made its foray into the sub-RM100,000 range-extender SUV segment with an exceptional value-for-money proposition. It is engineered to offer an accessible, budget-friendly extended-range mobility solution for family buyers prioritising cabin practicality and running efficiency.

Model Overview

Positioned as a mid-size SUV, the Tiger EDi centres on family-first practicality, emphasising expansive cabin space and long-distance driving range.

Key highlights: Range-extender hybrid powertrain, seven-seater configuration, strong value proposition, generous cargo capacity, and versatile all-road capability for both urban and rural driving.

Design & Dimensions: Measuring 4,605 mm long, 1,815 mm wide, and 1,825 mm tall, with a 2,780 mm wheelbase, the SUV sports a rugged exterior anchored by a bold shield-style front grille and robust off-road body cladding. Inside, the cabin adopts a clean, minimalist "floating island" dashboard layout anchored by a 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment display. Seating is arranged in a 2+2+3 seven-seater layout, featuring sliding second-row seats and a third row that folds completely flat into the floor.

Key Selling Proposition: The vehicle's main selling point is democratising BYD FinDreams Powertrain's range-extender hybrid technology down to under the RM100,000 threshold. By pairing a compact traction battery with a dedicated petrol range extender, it delivers running costs close to a pure electric vehicle (BEV) whilst entirely eliminating long-distance range anxiety.

Development History

Background: In 2023, catering to the burgeoning demand for affordable new energy vehicles in China, SWM Motors collaborated with FinDreams Powertrain to engineer the EDi range-extender variant on its proven Tiger petrol platform, aiming to introduce a truly budget-accessible EREV to the masses.

Evolution Timeline:

Market Launch (2023): The Tiger EDi officially went on sale, lowering the entry barrier for the EREV SUV segment courtesy of its aggressive pricing strategy.

Overseas Expansion (2024–2025): As part of SWM's broader European push, the SUV entered export markets under badges such as the XL30 EV. Beyond serving as a reliable commercial workhorse domestically, it spearheaded SWM’s entry into Europe’s budget SUV market.

Current Market Status (2026): As of 2026, the Tiger EDi remains actively on sale. Through a streamlined variant line-up and steady build quality refinements, it continues to register stable sales traction across tier-2 and tier-3 markets both domestically and abroad.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: Within its price bracket, the Tiger EDi primarily locks horns with conventional petrol-powered MPVs and compact crossovers. Its main competitive edge stems from green-vehicle road privileges in eligible regions, ultra-low urban commuting costs driven by its electric motor, and a versatile, full-sized seven-seater cabin.

Customer Feedback: Owners widely commend the vehicle for its frugal energy consumption per 100 km, generous interior packaging, and low maintenance overheads. While it misses out on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and high-end cabin trim seen on premium electrified rivals, it scores high marks for overall mechanical dependability and running economy as a multi-purpose everyday workhorse.

Key Specifications & Engineering

EREV Powertrain: Powered by the EDi intelligent hybrid system co-developed with FinDreams Powertrain, the setup combines a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine operating purely as a range extender with a front electric drive motor delivering a peak output of 105 kW. Drivers can toggle between EV Priority and Smart Hybrid drive modes, enabling a total combined cruising range in excess of 1,000 km.

Chassis & Underpinnings: Underpinned by a rugged five-link non-independent rear suspension tuned for payload endurance, the chassis boasts a generous 195 mm ground clearance. This delivers reassuring off-tarmac clearance, making light work of unpaved paths and rough suburban terrains.

Safety & Structural Rigidity: Energy is supplied by a CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack that has undergone rigorous nail penetration and moisture-ingress validation to guarantee long-term operational safety. The body shell incorporates a high-tensile steel safety cell construction, complying with standard passenger vehicle crash safety benchmarks.

Future Roadmap

Heading into 2026, the strategic roadmap for the Tiger EDi focuses on:

Strengthening Lower-Tier Market Penetration: Continuing to leverage its value-for-money edge across suburban and semi-rural markets to cater to rural-urban logistics and extended family transport needs.

Bolstering Overseas Exports: Utilising SWM Motors’ global distribution network to ramp up exports to developing markets with strong appetites for affordable utility SUVs, notably Southeast Asia and South America.

Lifecycle Maintenance & Refinement: Progressively refining the operational thermal stability of the range-extender engine across extreme ambient temperatures, whilst rolling out transparent, low-cost aftersales servicing packages to safeguard the ownership journey for existing fleet and private owners.
