SSC North America is an American supercar manufacturer, founded in 1999 in West Richland, Washington State, by Jerod Shelby. The brand focuses on creating ultimate driving machines of extreme speed, competing with brands such as Bugatti and Koenigsegg based on the philosophy of independent R&D and handcrafted production. SSC has won the title of "World's Fastest Production Car" twice. Its Tuatara is the first production model to break 500 km/h, representing the epitome of American speed obsession and technical dedication.

Development History

SSC's development history is a bumpy road of constantly charging to break top speed records. In 1999, Jerod Shelby, who loved high-horsepower cars, founded SSC in his home garage. After years of polishing prototypes, SSC launched its first production model, the Aero, in 2005. In 2007, the ultimate version of the series, the Ultimate Aero, shocked the automotive world. On a closed road in Washington State, it achieved an astonishing average two-way speed of 412.28 km/h, defeating the Bugatti Veyron equipped with a W16 engine at the time and claiming the Guinness World Record for "World's Fastest Production Car."

Although briefly overtaken by Bugatti in 2010, SSC did not remain silent. As early as 2011, SSC released the successor to the Ultimate Aero, the "Tuatara," aiming to reclaim the throne of the world's fastest production car. However, the development cycle of the Tuatara far exceeded expectations, taking nearly a decade to perfect. In October 2020, the Tuatara successfully challenged top speeds in Nevada, achieving one-way results of 532.93 km/h and 484.53 km/h, reclaiming the title of the fastest production car with an average two-way speed of 508.73 km/h. In 2025, the brand began deliveries of the Tuatara and its track version, the Aggressor.

Product Portfolio

As a synonym for extreme speed, SSC's production scale is extremely small, with only two production models as core products to date.

Ultimate Aero (2005–2010): The brand's signature work. The regular Aero and the ultimate Ultimate Aero TT were produced in a limited run of 24 units. Equipped with a 7.0-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine delivering a maximum power of 1,183 hp, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and a rear-wheel drive system, with peak torque reaching 1,482 N·m. Acceleration from 0 to 96 km/h takes only 2.8 seconds, curb weight is only 1,225 kg, and top speed reaches 437 km/h.

Tuatara (2020–present): The brand's second-generation flagship, with first deliveries in 2025. As SSC's current flagship product, the Tuatara offers multiple variants. The Standard Version adopts a mid-engine rear-wheel drive layout, equipped with a 5.9-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine paired with a CIMA 7-speed gearbox with shift speed of only 100 milliseconds, outputting approximately 1,350 hp under normal operating conditions. The Striker Version adds aggressive aerodynamic kits, featuring multi-level front splitters and carbon fiber diffusers. The Aggressor Track Version is designed specifically for the track, equipped with a flat-crank twin-turbocharged V8 engine delivering maximum power of up to 2,200 hp, and fitted with high downforce kits. Production is limited to 100 standard versions and 25 Aggressors. As of April 2026, the first customer for the Aggressor has officially received delivery.

Market Performance

SSC is extremely niche in scale, and its commercial path does not rely on high-volume sales but on brand premium and top-tier word-of-mouth. The Ultimate Aero started with a scarcity of no more than 24 units, with the first car selling for $431,000 on eBay. For over a decade, the second-hand market for the Ultimate Aero has not appreciated over time, with some low-mileage transaction prices hovering around just over $200,000. In contrast, the positioning of the Tuatara is more luxurious. This car once commanded a staggering price of 50 million to 69 million RMB in the Chinese market. Since first deliveries began in 2025, there is very little public information on annual production or revenue. Currently, sales are handled primarily through HK Motorcars in New York as the global exclusive dealer network.

Core Technology

SSC's technological core is its independently developed twin-turbocharged V8 engine. From the 2011 7.0-liter Tuatara concept version to the production version's 5.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine co-developed with Nelson Racing Engines, engineers retained a base output of 1,350 hp. By using E85 ethanol fuel, the engine can unleash a furious force of up to 1,750 hp. The Tuatara uses aerodynamic biomimicry in its body design, drawing from the low, streamlined posture of the New Zealand tuatara lizard to ensure driving stability. The entire car adopts a carbon fiber monocoque and a full carbon fiber body, with the standard version's dry weight at approximately 1,247 kg. The transmission system is a 7-speed sequential gearbox co-designed with CIMA (the Aggressor version), with shift speed reaching 100 milliseconds, ensuring efficient power delivery.

Global Presence

SSC's overseas expansion closely follows its product rhythm, with a focus mainly on China and the Middle East. In 2011, SSC held the Asia premiere of the Tuatara at Plaza 66 in Shanghai, declaring its entry into the then-potential mainland China supercar market. Its Asian layout also includes establishing a general agent, Xinlian International, in Taiwan, China, with a deal price as high as 63.8 million NTD. The brand has also invested significant effort in the Middle East market. In 2025, the Tuatara planned a record-breaking tour. Relying on HK Motorcars as its exclusive dealer and global service window, although SSC's headquarters and factory are both in the U.S., high-net-worth overseas customers remain the main consumer group.

Future Outlook

Starting in 2026, SSC is attempting to pursue electrification while maintaining its tradition of extreme internal combustion engines. Jerod Shelby has stated that he is developing a pure electric version of the Tuatara, with the focus placed on acceleration and track dynamic performance rather than merely chasing top speed. Additionally, the brand plans to build a new headquarters and mass production factory, ending its long-term reliance on craft workshop-style production bottlenecks. In emerging cross-border markets, SSC also attempts to extend its technical advantages from the fuel sector to the smart electric sector. However, compared to the limited scale of whole vehicle production and sales, the brand's main direction in the coming years remains ensuring the precise completion of the more than 100 Tuatara units planned for delivery, and launching next-generation high-performance models to the market at an appropriate time.
