SAIC MAXUS V80

2026-09-21 04:30:00

Model Overview

The SAIC MAXUS V80 is one of the core pillar models in SAIC MAXUS’ commercial vehicle stable, positioned squarely in the wide-body light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment. Tracing its lineage back to Britain's century-old LDV brand, SAIC Motor acquired the technology in 2009 and rolled out the first V80 model in 2011. Serving as the primary workhorse of "China’s No. 1 Light Commercial Vehicle Brand" with 14 years of market presence, the V80 range has evolved into a comprehensive lineup—including the Urban Delivery King, Aoyuntong, Business Travel Edition, Classic Edition, and PLUS Edition—catering to diverse applications from urban logistics to corporate transport, whilst also spawning converted variants such as the V80 motorhome and serving hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. In terms of body configurations, the V80 offers a versatile mix of four body lengths (short, long, and extra-long wheelbase) and three roof heights (low, medium, and high roof), with a standard overall vehicle width of 1,998 mm. Its powertrain lineup complies with China VI emission standards with both internal combustion and all-electric options. Powered by SAIC’s proprietary C2B smart customisation model, it stands as one of the most versatile wide-body LCV lineups in China, with prices ranging from RM90,000 to RM250,000.

Design Language

The V80 was among the pioneers in the commercial vehicle segment to adopt passenger-car-inspired styling, moving away from the bare-bones utilitarian look of conventional panel vans. Up front, the latest Xintu V80 sports a wing-style multi-slat chrome grille inspired by the traditional Chinese 'Ding' vessel and a 'Galaxy' design motif, flanked by newly styled LED 'tear-drop' headlamps to give the front fascia an imposing and distinctive contemporary identity. Down the sides, the van retains a clean, boxy silhouette, complemented by restyled vertical tail lamps that are more compact yet visually striking for enhanced night-time visibility; higher-spec variants further gain privacy glass and alloy wheels. At the rear, the 50:50 split barn doors feature exposed hinges—a nod to functional durability. Inside, the dashboard layout takes cues from modern MPVs, offering a multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, and various touchscreen infotainment display options depending on the model year and trim. While hard-wearing plastics reflect its commercial remit, tech features such as smartphone connectivity, voice commands, and smart fleet telematics are widely fitted, elevating cabin refinement closer to passenger MPVs.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the entire V80 range is powered by the proven 'SAIC π' 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine. Named one of the 2020 'China Heart' Top Ten Engines, the powerplant meets China VI b emission standards and comes in several output tunes tailored for different market needs. The entry-level commercial variant produces 93 kW (approx. 126 PS) and 320 Nm of torque, while the mainstream higher-output versions deliver 108 kW (approx. 147 PS) with peak torque ranging from 340 Nm to 375 Nm. The engine is tuned for strong low-end pulling power, with maximum torque kicking in from just 1,400 rpm to ensure effortless hauling on steep inclines and during stop-and-go city driving, with a broad torque spread reaching 415 Nm at 1,500 rpm. On the transmission front, the V80 offers several drivetrain setups. Notably, the 2025 Xintu V80 9AT variant is the first wide-body van in its class in China to feature a ZF-derived 9-speed automatic transmission (9AT), shedding 10 kg and utilising a wide 9.81 gear ratio spread for smoother shifts and better fuel economy. Additionally, 6-speed automated manual (AMT) and 6-speed manual gearboxes remain available to suit varying operating needs and budgets. Its front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout with heavy-duty rear load capacity balances diesel low-end torque with road-going efficiency. Fuel consumption for the 9AT variant is rated at around 8.2 litres per 100 km in real-world testing—1.5 litres lower than comparable rivals—while manual and AMT models average around 7.5 litres per 100 km, returning even better figures on long highway hauls.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the V80 rides on a monocoque chassis with a front-wheel-drive configuration. The front setup uses MacPherson independent suspension for direct road feel and predictable handling, while the rear relies on heavy-duty leaf springs designed to cope with demanding payloads. Tuned by the UK's renowned MIRA, the chassis delivers a planted and composed ride. Steering is handled by a hydraulic power steering system that offers reassuring weight and ample road feedback; braking hardware includes all-round disc brakes on selected variants, with front disc and rear drum setups on entry-to-mid specs. Selected high-spec grades are equipped with Bosch ESP 9 electronic stability control and Roll Movement Intervention (RMI) to maintain composure on wet roads or during sudden lane changes. Furthermore, the ultra-low roof variant stands at just 2,070 mm tall, allowing easy access into height-restricted multi-storey and basement carparks for seamless urban logistics operations.

Cabin & Features

The V80 places heavy emphasis on interior space efficiency and versatility from the ground up, leveraging SAIC MAXUS’ C2B customisation framework to offer more than 50 seating configurations spanning 2 to 15 seats. On passenger models such as the 9-seater Business Travel Edition ('2+2+2+3' layout), an ultra-low floor height of just 540 mm combined with 1,710 mm of interior standing height allows occupants to walk through the cabin with ease, making passenger boarding and cargo loading safer and less strenuous. For cargo duties, the long-wheelbase high-roof panel van boasts a massive cargo volume of up to 11.4 cubic metres and an internal height of 1.92 metres, providing 12% more usable room than segment competitors. Technology-wise, the V80 comes with a floating infotainment touchscreen running the Spider Intelligent system, supporting smartphone integration, voice control, and remote fleet management capabilities. On the comfort front, optional upgrades such as second-row captain seats, teak wood flooring, ambient lighting, and manual privacy blinds can be specified, delivering an executive MPV-like travel experience in a commercial van.

Safety & Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the V80’s body structure incorporates over 50% high-strength steel with laser welding techniques and a robust safety cage design to preserve cabin integrity. The exterior panels are made of double-sided galvanised steel sheets offering outstanding anti-corrosion protection, backed by a 10-year anti-perforation standard. Active safety is comprehensive: alongside standard ABS, EBD, and Brake Assist (BAS), the vehicle comes equipped with Bosch ESP 9 stability control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and all-round disc brakes for confident stopping performance. Higher variants add front parking sensors, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), and Lane Change Assist (LCA) to minimise urban blind-spot collision risks. While lacking full-speed Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features, standard cruise control, reverse sensors, an available reverse camera, and sub-metre high-precision positioning provide dependable safety and fleet management support for commercial operators.

Market Performance & Evaluation

By the end of 2025, cumulative domestic sales of the Xintu V80 series reached approximately 38,000 units, with the Value Edition accounting for over 60% of total deliveries. Industry delivery figures show that SAIC MAXUS’ overall LCV lineup (anchored by the V80 and V90) registered 9,630 units in September 2025 alone, commanding a 22.06% market share and achieving a 77.12% year-on-year surge. On the export front, SAIC MAXUS has expanded into 73 global markets across Australasia, Europe, South America, and the Middle East, with cumulative overseas sales topping 400,000 units. Its light commercial models have carved out a strong presence in mature markets such as the European Union and Australia, consistently ranking among the top three in pure EV commercial vehicle market share in several countries and serving as a prime showcase of advanced Chinese manufacturing abroad.

The V80 has earned an enviable reputation among fleet operators and private owners on two major fronts: outstanding fuel efficiency with minimal downtime—supported by a generous 20,000 km service interval that saves thousands of ringgit in annual maintenance over its rivals—and exceptional flexibility for conversions, making it a favourite platform for campervan builds and mobile food or retail trucks. Furthermore, with an idling noise level of just 51 dB, its NVH refinement ranks among the best in the commercial vehicle category. Industry observers note that with its bespoke C2B customisation options, diverse model range, and strong sales both at home and abroad, the V80 series serves as a highly cost-effective, productivity-boosting workhorse for transport operators navigating challenging market conditions.
