Polestar2

2026-10-12 10:40:00

Model Overview

The Polestar 2 is the Polestar brand's first all-electric mass-production model. Making its global debut in 2020, it is positioned as a high-performance pure electric fastback. As Polestar's entry-level offering, the Polestar 2 continues production until the end of this generation following the arrival of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4, and is slated for an all-new generation before 2030. As of 2026, the Polestar 2 has entered the middle of its lifecycle, with the 2026 model year facelift bringing key upgrades to the battery, smart cockpit, and design details.

Dimension-wise, the 2026 Polestar 2 measures 4,606 × 1,859 × 1,482 mm (L × W × H) with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm. The vehicle features a 5-door, 5-seater fastback layout with a 405-litre boot capacity, expandable to 1,095 litres with the rear seats folded down. The 2026 model is offered in four variants: Standard range Single motor, Long range Single motor, Long range Dual motor, and Long range Dual motor Performance. Overseas pricing starts from USD 62,400 (approx. RM450,000), while the Performance variant climbs to USD 85,080 with the standard Plus Pack. In the domestic market, the current Polestar 2 is officially priced between RM299,800 and RM358,800. Key rivals include the Tesla Model 3, BMW i3, and BYD Seal.

Design Language

The 2026 Polestar 2 retains the brand's signature Scandinavian minimalist aesthetics, with subtle styling tweaks overall. Up front, a closed-off grille highlights its pure EV identity, flanked by the signature "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights and a frameless grille design consistent with the family look. Unlike many modern EVs that feature flush door handles, the Polestar 2 sticks to conventional grab handles, reflecting Polestar's focus on everyday practicality. Newly added air curtains on both sides of the front bumper enhance aerodynamic efficiency by 7%, while matrix LED daytime running lights support dynamic welcome lighting animations. At the rear, the full-width LED light bar incorporates 3D floating technology for prominent night-time visibility.

The 2026 exterior updates focus on paint colours and wheels. A new "Dune" metallic exterior finish replaces the previous "Jupiter". Meanwhile, the Performance Pack gains newly styled 20-inch 5-spoke forged alloy wheels—the lightest wheel option offered on the Polestar 2 to date.

Inside, the cabin continues the minimalist and practical theme, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 11.2-inch (14.7-inch in select markets) central touchscreen infotainment display as standard. The 2026 model introduces a new "MicroTech" bio-attributed upholstery option in Charcoal, complete with bespoke quilting and dark grey trim accents. The material mimics the supple feel of Nappa leather while being 15% lighter. Physical controls for the climate system and drive modes are retained on the centre console, avoiding safety risks associated with full touchscreen reliance.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 Polestar 2 carries over the powertrain options from the 2024 update, offering single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The Standard Range Single Motor variant is driven by a rear-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor producing 200 kW (approx. 268 hp) and 490 Nm of torque, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6.2 seconds. The Long Range Single Motor version outputs 220 kW (approx. 295 hp) and 490 Nm, completing the 0-100 km/h run in 5.9 seconds. The Dual Motor variant delivers a combined output of 310 kW (approx. 416 hp) and 740 Nm; opting for the Performance Pack bumps output to 469 hp, shaving the 0-100 km/h time down to 4.0-4.1 seconds. Top speed across the range is electronically capped at 204 km/h.

On the battery front, the most notable update for 2026 is switching the entry-level battery supplier from LG Chem to CATL. The Standard Range Single Motor variant now packs a 70 kWh NMC ternary lithium battery (replacing the previous 69 kWh pack), boosting the WLTP combined range from 546 km to 554 km. Maximum DC fast charging rate has been raised from 135 kW to 180 kW, enabling a 10%-80% state of charge (SoC) in just 26 minutes. Long Range and Dual Motor variants continue with the 82 kWh battery, supporting a peak charging rate of 205 kW to achieve a 10%-80% charge in 28 minutes. Plug & Charge functionality is standard across the entire lineup.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the chassis employs front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The major update in 2024 switching the single-motor model from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive is retained for 2026. The Performance variant comes standard with Öhlins Dual Flow Valve (DFV) adjustable dampers and Brembo 4-piston front brake calipers. One-Pedal Drive and multi-level regenerative braking adjustments are standard across the range. The electric power steering (EPS) adapts in tandem with the selectable drive modes. It rides on 245/40 R20 tyres all around. With a sport-oriented chassis tune, the car delivers precise and planted handling, earning praise from motoring media for its "superb driving dynamics".

Cabin and Features

Cabin technology represents the core highlight of the 2026 update. The new model is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon in-car chipset (3rd-gen Snapdragon Cockpit Platform), boasting triple the processing power of its predecessor to significantly improve infotainment app download speeds, system responsiveness, and overall smoothness. The system supports 5G connectivity and full-vehicle Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, alongside a new "Nordic Aurora" UI theme. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity come standard.

On the audio front, augmenting the existing 13-speaker, 600W Harman Kardon sound system, the 2026 model offers an optional 14-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system with a total output of 1,350W. The bespoke setup features Bowers & Wilkins' proprietary Tweeter-on-Top technology, Kevlar mid-bass units, and Continuum midrange drivers, specifically calibrated by Polestar acoustic engineers.

Comfort and convenience features standard across the range include heated front seats, keyless entry with push-start button, and dual-zone automatic climate control. The 2026 model adds rear side and rear windscreen privacy glass. The seats are upholstered in eco-friendly fabric or MicroTech bio-attributed materials.

Safety and Driver Assistance

In terms of safety, the Polestar 2 holds a 5-star safety rating from ANCAP (Australasian New Car Assessment Program) crash tests. Eight airbags are fitted as standard across the range. Active safety features include Cross Traffic Alert with brake support, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Collision Avoidance and Mitigation, and more.

For driver assistance, it comes equipped with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). Core functions include: Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) , Lane Keeping Aid, Lane Centring Control, City and Highway Assist, and Traffic Jam Assist. A reverse camera and front and rear parking sensors are standard across the lineup.

Market Performance and Reception

Since its 2020 debut, the Polestar 2 has recorded over 50,000 units produced globally across 27 markets. In South Korea, cumulative sales reached 5,206 units; in the Australian market, cumulative sales exceeded 6,200 units since its 2021 introduction.

However, the 2026 Polestar 2's performance in global markets shows mixed fortunes. In Australia, 2025 sales dropped 48.9% year-on-year to 746 units, making it the only Polestar model to suffer a sales decline. Polestar Australia's Managing Director noted that with the strong momentum of the Polestar 4, Polestar 2 sales are not expected to surge significantly in 2026. In May 2026, global sales of the Polestar 2 reached 1,190 units, up 68% year-on-year. In Canada, Polestar is set to resume sales of the China-built Polestar 2 in September 2026. A successor to the Polestar 2 is slated for debut in early 2027.

In media reviews, the Polestar 2 is lauded as "still a brilliant EV that doesn't feel aged midway through its lifecycle". Its key strengths lie in superb driving dynamics, practical fastback versatility, and faster charging speeds for the entry variant. On the flip side, its shortcomings include a steep price tag, confusing trim/option pack combinations, and a noticeably firm ride. In the domestic market, its starting price of RM299,800 puts it under pressure from the Tesla Model 3 (from RM235,500) and the BMW i3 (from RM350,000). Nevertheless, as the trailblazer for the Polestar brand, the Polestar 2 continues to hold a distinct edge in the premium electric sedan segment courtesy of its Scandinavian minimalism, poised chassis tuning, and regular OTA updates.
