Peugeot 5008

2026-10-08 08:20:00

The Peugeot 5008 is the flagship mid-size SUV from the French carmaker Peugeot. The model line boasts a unique heritage: the first-generation 5008 (2009) debuted as an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) and served as a sister model to the Citroën C4 Picasso. Driven by the global surge in SUV demand, Peugeot completely reinvented the second-generation 5008 in 2017 into a mid-size seven-seater SUV. Currently sold in the Chinese domestic market, the Dongfeng Peugeot 5008 represents the facelifted version of this second-generation model. Serving as Dongfeng Peugeot's flagship SUV, the 5008 is marketed as a French flagship SUV boasting a "5+2 versatile spacious layout", catering primarily to larger families and households with multiple children. Dealer indicative pricing for the 2026 Dongfeng Peugeot 5008 starts from RM131,700.

Design Language

The Dongfeng Peugeot 5008 carries forward the brand's signature "Lion Soul Aesthetics" design philosophy. Up front, the "Infinite" design concept features a frameless starry dot-matrix grille with parametric gradient detailing, crowned by Peugeot's sharp, new shield emblem. Flanking the grille are signature fang-style LED daytime running lights (DRLs) integrated into the full-LED headlights, which feature adaptive high-beam assist and dynamic sequential turn signals. The GT variant further gains an exclusive blacked-out styling package. In profile, the vehicle showcases a dynamic, forward-leaning stance, accented by a sharp waistline running from the front fender to the rear, complemented by a floating Black Diamond roof and 19- or 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. Body dimensions measure 4,670 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, and 1,655 mm in height, riding on a 2,840 mm wheelbase. At the rear, the iconic three-claw LED tail lights offer exceptional brand recognition. Inside, the 5008 adopts Peugeot’s distinctive i-Cockpit cabin architecture. Mid-to-high-spec variants receive extensive Alcantara trim, paired with a compact motorsport-inspired steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, piano-key toggle switches on the centre console, and a yacht-style electronic gear selector.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 Dongfeng Peugeot 5008 comes standard across the range with a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine (400THP), pushing out 155 kW (211 hp) and 300 Nm of peak torque. Power is channelled through an imported Aisin 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. This powertrain setup is acclaimed for its seamless power delivery and crisp gearshift logic. The official 0-100 km/h sprint is completed in roughly 8.5 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h. Its WLTC-rated combined fuel consumption stands at 7.26 L/100 km, and it is compatible with minimum RON 92 petrol. In global markets, the all-new generation Peugeot 5008 has debuted on the STLA Medium platform, offering 48V mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and pure-electric (E-5008) options. The petrol version is powered by a 1.2-litre turbo engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system, while the all-electric E-5008 is available in single- and dual-motor setups, delivering a maximum WLTP driving range of up to 660 km.

Chassis and Handling

The Dongfeng Peugeot 5008 is built upon PSA Group's EMP2 modular platform. The suspension setup comprises front MacPherson struts and a rear deformable crossbeam semi-independent suspension (torsion beam non-independent setup). Although configured with a rear torsion beam, Peugeot’s renowned chassis tuning prowess ensures an admirable balance between ride comfort and dynamic handling. The chassis setup feels taut and composed, offering solid suspension body control. Even during lane changes at speeds of 100 km/h, it delivers reassuring driver confidence. The steering utilizes an electric power steering (EPS) system, providing precise turn-in response and composed rear-end tracking. It is also equipped with the Advanced Grip Control all-terrain system, offering five selectable drive modes: Normal/Road, Snow, Mud, Sand, and ESP Off.

Cabin and Features

The 5008 is equipped as standard across the range with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch central touchscreen infotainment display. Powered by the next-generation Blue-i 3.0 intelligent connectivity system, it integrates intelligent voice interaction, connected navigation, AR real-view navigation, online music, and video streaming. Seating is configured in a practical "2+3+2" seven-seat layout. The second-row seats feature 160 mm of fore-and-aft sliding adjustment alongside reclining backrests, accompanied by a completely flat floor. The third-row seats can fold completely flat beneath the boot floor or be detached entirely—each seat weighs just 11 kg and can double as an outdoor seat. In standard five-seater mode, boot space stands at 740 litres; folding down the third row expands capacity to 790 litres; folding both the second and third rows unlocks a massive 2,040 litres. A total of 30 practical storage cubbies are dotted throughout the interior.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety remains a core selling point of the Peugeot 5008. In terms of passive safety, the vehicle adopts a space-capsule-inspired ultra-high-strength safety cage design, with 1,600 MPa submarine-grade ultra-high-strength steel used in critical structural areas, bringing the proportion of high-strength steel to 73%. It achieved a top Five-Star+ rating in C-NCAP crash safety assessments. Six airbags are fitted as standard across all variants. For active safety, the 5008 comes equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which leverages 23 high-precision sensors and 8 cameras to deliver Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Features include Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). A 360-degree HD panoramic surround-view camera system with a transparent chassis view is standard across the range. Additionally, the Blue-i 3.0 system incorporates an SOS emergency e-call function. As the first vehicle in the automotive industry to earn both SGS Gold Label and ASL health certifications, the 5008 also excels in utilizing eco-friendly, low-emission interior cabin materials.

Market Performance and Verdict

Since pivoting from an MPV to an SUV in 2017, the Peugeot 5008 has enjoyed steady performance in the European market. In China, the Dongfeng Peugeot 5008 made its market debut in June 2017. The updated 5008 arrived in November 2022, priced between RM178,700 and RM233,700. However, the 5008's sales performance in the Chinese market has remained modest, recording 1,534 units across the whole of 2025, and 293 units in April 2026. Industry observers note that the rear torsion beam suspension setup may have swayed some prospective buyers. Nonetheless, as the French marque's flagship entry in the mid-size SUV segment, the Peugeot 5008 retains a unique appeal among buyers seeking distinctive character and practicality, courtesy of its standout design aesthetics, versatile cabin packaging, planted chassis dynamics, and generous safety credentials.
