Model Overview

The OMODA C9 is a D-segment coupe SUV under Chery Automobile's OMODA brand. It is worth noting that this model is not a ground-up development by OMODA, but rather a rebadged version of the EXEED RX (known in China as the Yaoguang) under Chery's premium sub-brand EXEED. With both OMODA and EXEED housed under the Chery Group umbrella, the C9 was introduced as a rebadged offering to streamline overseas product portfolios and rationalise the group's model hierarchy.
The OMODA C9 is tailored primarily for export markets and is not sold in mainland China. South Africa served as its debut market, followed by right-hand drive (RHD) markets including Malaysia and Thailand. In Malaysia, the C9 is retailed through the Jaecoo dealership network, which is also part of the Chery Group. It is built in a five-door, five-seater SUV body style.
In terms of pricing, the petrol-powered model in Malaysia is priced at RM168,800 for the 2WD (front-wheel drive) variant (approx. RMB 278,000) and RM188,800 for the AWD variant (approx. RMB 310,000). In March 2026, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant was officially launched in Malaysia, carrying a price tag of RM208,800 (approx. RMB 344,000).
Design Language
Styling-wise, the OMODA C9 retains the exterior design of the EXEED RX, differing only with the OMODA script badging on the front and rear. Up front, it sports an expansive borderless diamond-matrix grille flanked by full-width LED daytime running lights and vertical air curtains. The profile is defined by a sleek fastback coupe-SUV silhouette, complemented by flush pop-out door handles and multi-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels. The rear is rounded off with a full-width LED taillight bar.
In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,775 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,671 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. Ground clearance is rated at 165 mm.
Inside, the cabin mirror-images the EXEED RX's layout. The cockpit features a dual-screen setup comprising twin 12.3-inch displays for the digital instrument cluster and central infotainment touchscreen. A flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel is embossed with the OMODA wordmark. The interior adopts a wraparound architecture designed with an upmarket, "accessible luxury" aesthetic.
Powertrain & Performance
The OMODA C9 is offered with a choice of two powertrains: petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
The petrol variant is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 261 hp and 400 Nm of peak torque, paired with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (8AT) (sourced from Aisin according to reports). The 0-100 km/h sprint is dispatched in 7.6 seconds. Buyers can choose between 2WD (front-wheel drive) and AWD driveline configurations.
The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant harnesses Chery's latest Super Hybrid System (SHS) . The setup pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine (143 hp / 215 Nm) with dual front-axle electric motors and a single rear-axle motor, creating an electric tri-motor AWD layout. Combined system output is rated at a potent 537 hp and 650 Nm of torque, routed through a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) . The century sprint from 0-100 km/h takes just 4.9 seconds, with top speed capped at 180 km/h.
In terms of range and efficiency, the PHEV variant packs a 34.46 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. It delivers an all-electric range of 145 km (WLTP) or up to 169 km (NEDC), while total combined driving range exceeds 1,100 km. Rated fuel consumption is rated as low as 1.4 L/100 km (NEDC). For charging, DC fast charging is supported at up to 70 kW, replenishing the battery from 30% to 80% in 25 minutes. AC charging is supported at up to 6.6 kW, taking roughly 5.5 hours for a full charge.
Chassis & Handling
Underpinnings comprise a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The PHEV variant gains a Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension system capable of adjusting damping forces up to 100 times per second, offering Soft, Medium, Hard, and Auto modes. Stopping power comes from front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, complete with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with auto-hold. Drivelines include 2WD and mechanical AWD on the petrol version, and an intelligent electric AWD on the PHEV.
Cabin & Equipment
Equipment-wise, all OMODA C9 variants come standard with dual 12.3-inch integrated widescreen displays. The PHEV variant steps up with a 14-speaker Sony premium audio system. Creature comforts include a panoramic glass sunroof, ventilated and heated front seats, seat massage function, 50W Qi wireless smartphone charger, Head-Up Display (HUD), and a 540-degree surround-view camera. The PHEV variant further adds an onboard fragrance system and intelligent voice control ("Hello OMODA"). Official cargo boot volume figures have not been disclosed.
Safety & Driver Assistance (ADAS)
On the safety front, the OMODA C9 boasts a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating, underpinned by a high-rigidity body composed of up to 85% high-strength steel. Passive safety gear includes 9 airbags on the petrol variant and 8 airbags on the PHEV model.
The SUV is also fitted with a comprehensive suite of Level 2.5 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) , encompassing features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM). A 540-degree panoramic camera system is also on hand to aid parking and low-speed manoeuvring.
Market Reception & Overview
The OMODA C9 serves as a strategic cornerstone in Chery's global expansion. Chery Group's overseas exports surpassed 1 million units between January and November 2024—a 22.4% year-on-year increase—spanning across more than 110 international markets. In Malaysia, the C9 is locally assembled (CKD) and distributed through the Jaecoo brand retail network.
Conversely, the OMODA sub-brand has encountered headwinds in its domestic Chinese market. For instance, the China-market OMODA 5 logged monthly sales of only 189, 152, and 141 units from July to September 2024 respectively, with cumulative sales reaching just 862 units between January and March 2025. Market commentators highlight that OMODA's domestic sales numbers have remained subdued since its initial debut in July 2022.
Industry observers note that by rebadging the EXEED RX as the OMODA C9, Chery has effectively reinforced and expanded its international model line-up under the OMODA banner. The model goes up against established D-segment SUVs such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Toyota RAV4. Overall, leveraging the robust engineering roots of the EXEED RX, the OMODA C9 broadens Chery's overseas footprint via a rebadging playbook, though its long-term sales momentum remains to be seen.
