2026-10-08 16:40:01

Model Overview

The Mercedes-Maybach SL marks the Maybach marque’s inaugural two-seater luxury convertible sports car, engineered on the architecture of the AMG SL 63 4MATIC+. Officially premiered at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in August 2024, the roadster arrives as Maybach’s fourth product offering, following the S-Class, EQS SUV, and GLS. Serving as the debut special edition, the SL 680 Monogram Series represents the highest-performance offering within the Maybach stable. Order books opened in selected markets in October 2025; as of June 2026, the primary variant retailing overseas is the 2026 SL 680 Roadster (Monogram Series). Pricing starts from approximately €256,000 (around RM1,960,000) in Germany and roughly US$225,000 in the US market. By comparison, the domestic recommended retail price for the AMG SL 63 4MATIC+ stands at RM1,999,800.

Design Language

The exterior styling of the Maybach SL has undergone bespoke Maybach refinement while retaining the athletic silhouette of the AMG SL. The front end sports Maybach’s signature vertical-slat chrome radiator grille in an "A"-shaped contour, highlighted by an illuminated "MAYBACH" script. It retains the upright Three-Pointed Star bonnet mascot, complemented by rose gold accents inside the headlamp clusters. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,697 mm long, 1,915 mm wide, and 1,358 mm tall (with the soft top raised), sitting on a 2,700 mm wheelbase.

Two signature dual-tone colour combinations are on offer: "White Ambiance", which pairs Obsidian Black with MANUFAKTUR Opalite White Magno; and "Red Ambiance", blending Obsidian Black with MANUFAKTUR Garnet Red Metallic. Buyers can also specify from over 50 bespoke MANUFAKTUR paint options. The soft-top is finished in light black acoustic fabric embossed with anthracite Maybach motifs and operates in around 15 seconds. The roadster rides on 21-inch Maybach forged alloy wheels. At the rear, it keeps the core AMG SL profile whilst adding a full-width chrome garnish and Maybach-specific tailpipes.

Inside, the cabin is generously upholstered in Crystal White Nappa leather in a two-tone black-and-white theme. The seat upholstery features an intricate embroidered "floral" pattern. Brand presence is further elevated by the two-tone steering wheel shared with the Maybach S-Class and a digital instrument binnacle running a Maybach-specific UI.

Powertrain and Performance

The Maybach SL 680 is powered by an AMG-developed 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 powerplant, churning out 430 kW (577–585 hp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of peak torque. Power is sent through an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed automatic transmission. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h is dispatched in 4.0–4.1 seconds, with top speed electronically capped. The 4MATIC+ fully variable all-wheel-drive system is fitted as standard across the range. WLTP combined fuel consumption varies depending on specific test parameters.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the Maybach SL features front and rear multi-link independent suspension and comes standard with the AMG Active Ride Control suspension, using hydraulic roll stabilisation to mitigate body lean in real time. The chassis setup features bespoke Maybach calibration to deliver a harmonious balance between dynamic agility and plush ride comfort. The active rear-axle steering provides up to 2.5° of steering angle, achieving a turning circle of 12.4 metres. Steering duties are handled by an electromechanical rack-and-pinion system. Among the drive modes, the Maybach-exclusive "MAYBACH mode" softens the dampers to their most compliant setting for maximum cruising comfort.

Cabin and Equipment

The Maybach SL adopts a pure two-seater configuration, doing away with the AMG SL's rear bench to make way for a Nappa leather-lined storage compartment. The centre stack houses the portrait-oriented touchscreen display carried over from the AMG SL, updated with Maybach-bespoke graphics and menus. In-car entertainment is courtesy of a standard Burmester high-end 3D surround sound system, packing 17 speakers and a 1,220 W output. Creature comforts include ventilated front seats and dual-zone automatic climate control. Maybach also provides bespoke lifestyle accessories for owners, ranging from high fashion apparel to luxury leather goods.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the Maybach SL is equipped with an extensive suite of active and passive safety technologies. The Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package comes standard with adaptive cruise control, active brake assist, and lane keeping assist. A 360-degree surround-view camera and automated parking assist provide effortless manoeuvrability. To ensure open-top safety, an active roll-over protection system is fitted as standard, rapidly deploying roll bars if an imminent roll-over is detected.

Market Position and Overview

The launch of the Maybach SL signifies the brand's inaugural foray into the luxury grand tourer (GT) segment. Built upon the robust engineering of the AMG SL 63, it infuses Maybach's signature opulence without sacrificing performance. In this ultra-luxury segment, its key direct rivals include grand tourers like the Bentley Continental GT Convertible. The SL 680 Monogram Series is offered as a built-to-order model and is produced exclusively in left-hand drive (LHD). As of June 2026, the vehicle has not been officially launched in the Chinese market, requiring local buyers to source units via parallel imports. From a product positioning standpoint, the Maybach SL strikes a compelling equilibrium between high luxury and grand touring sportiness, offering a distinctive proposition in the ultra-luxury open-top GT segment.
