Model Overview

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the brand's most legendary rugged off-roader. Originating in 1979 and initially developed for military use, it has evolved over more than four decades into the benchmark and ultimate icon among luxury rugged 4x4s. Positioned as a mid-to-large luxury SUV, the G-Class line-up is entirely fully imported (CBU). In March 2024, Mercedes-Benz officially introduced the facelifted G-Class, with the most notable update being the transition from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine to a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six engine. As of June 2026, the 2025 and 2026 G 500 variants are on sale in the domestic market, carrying a manufacturer's recommended retail price of RM1,868,000.
Design Language
The most distinctive hallmark of the G-Class is its iconic boxy silhouette, a classic design that has remained virtually unchanged since its debut, serving as one of the most recognisable symbols in the rugged off-road realm. Following the 2024 facelift, the horizontal chrome louvres within the polygonal front grille increased from three to four, adding visual depth; the circular headlamp units feature smoked housings with integrated projector lenses and circular LED daytime running lights. The lower bumper adopts a three-section layout with enlarged side air ducts finished in a black honeycomb mesh pattern. Along the sides, straight character lines are complemented by flared wheel arches and side skirt body cladding; the rear preserves the classic tailgate-mounted full-size spare tyre cover and side-hinged tailgate. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,875 mm long, 1,931 mm wide, and 1,978 mm tall, with a 2,890 mm wheelbase and a minimum ground clearance of 247 mm. The 2025 model offers exclusive exterior paint options, including MANUFAKTUR Matt Cloud Pink. Inside, the cabin features a redesigned three-spoke flat-bottom multi-function steering wheel, a dual-screen digital cockpit, and a column-mounted electronic gear selector. The centre console features extensive chrome trim, with the iconic trio of differential lock switches prominently retained.
Powertrain & Performance
The 2024 facelift marks a major turning point in the G-Class powertrain evolution, replacing the venerable 4.0-litre V8 with a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. Codenamed the 256 830, this longitudinally mounted twin-turbo engine delivers a maximum power output of 330 kW (449 hp) and a peak torque of 560 Nm. The integrated starter-generator (ISG) provides a temporary boost of 15 kW and 200 Nm. Power is transferred via a 9-speed automatic transmission, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.4 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h. Combined fuel consumption stands at 11.0 L/100 km under the WLTC cycle. Equipped with a generous 100-litre fuel tank, the theoretical driving range exceeds 800 km.
Chassis & Handling
Underneath, the G-Class employs an independent double-wishbone front suspension paired with a rigid rear axle. From the 2024 model year onwards, adaptive adjustable damping suspension comes standard on the G 500. It features a front-engine, full-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) layout, complete with three 100% mechanical differential locks (front axle, rear axle, and centre differential lock). For extreme off-road capability, it boasts a minimum ground clearance of 247 mm. The facelift also introduces three dedicated off-road driving modes: 'Trail' for dirt or gravel tracks; 'Rock' engineered for jagged rocks and severe uneven terrain; and 'Sand' mode, which dynamically recalibrates power output, suspension damping, and ESP stability parameters. Steering is handled via an electric power steering system.
Cabin & Equipment
Inside the cabin, the G-Class comes standard with a widescreen cockpit comprising a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central touchscreen infotainment display, powered by the intuitive MBUX multimedia system. It supports AR augmented-reality navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and intelligent voice control. The seats are trimmed in supple Nappa leather with 18-way electric adjustment, memory, ventilation, heating, and massage functions. A 64-colour ambient lighting system allows customisable interior illumination. Premium acoustics are delivered by a Burmester® surround sound system featuring 18 speakers. The facelift adds keyless entry, temperature-controlled cup holders, a wireless smartphone charger, and heated front door armrests; rear passengers can also be treated to an optional MBUX rear entertainment system featuring dual 11.6-inch displays mounted on the front seatbacks.
Safety & Driver Assistance
In terms of safety and active driver assistance, the G 500 is equipped with a Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) as standard. Key features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Assist, Lane Change Assist, Active Parking Assist, and Blind Spot Monitoring. Active safety systems comprise Forward Collision Warning, Rear Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Fatigue Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking. Passive safety is reinforced by a comprehensive suite of 10 airbags throughout the cabin. The onboard sensor suite incorporates 1 millimetre-wave radar alongside 6 front and 6 rear ultrasonic parking sensors. Furthermore, the G-Class offers a 540° surround-view camera system with a transparent chassis function, as well as a night vision system with an effective detection range of up to 300 metres.
Market Performance & Verdict
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has long established itself as the benchmark in the global ultra-luxury rugged SUV segment, commanding an impressive three-year residual value of 78.5% to lead its category. Highly sought-after limited-edition models even command secondary market premiums of up to 120% above the original list price. Renowned for its timeless styling, peerless off-road prowess, and top-tier luxury refinement, the G-Class is universally revered as an off-road icon. The 2024 facelift traded the long-running 4.0-litre V8 for a modern 3.0-litre straight-six with 48V mild-hybrid technology, effectively improving output metrics and acceleration despite engine downsizing. Facing key competitors such as the Land Rover Defender and Lexus LX, the G-Class continues to preserve its purely mechanical soul with signature triple differential locks and its unmistakable boxy silhouette amid the global EV transition—a steadfast commitment that remains its greatest and most distinctive selling point.
