The Mercedes-Benz CLA EV is the maiden production model underpinned by the brand's all-new MMA (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) platform, slotted as an all-electric compact luxury sedan. Serving as the third-generation iteration of the CLA family, the all-electric CLA staged its global debut in Rome, Italy in March 2025, followed by the official launch of its locally assembled (CKD) long-wheelbase version in China on 5 November 2025. Built and retailed by Beijing Benz, the model comes in three variants with prices spanning between RM249,000 and RM299,900. Spearheading Mercedes-Benz's electrification roadmap, the CLA EV carries the vital task of transitioning the brand from relying on a "brand premium" to commanding a "technology premium".

Design Language
Visually, the CLA EV inherits the brand's latest EV styling cues. Upfront, it wears a closed-off grille embedded with 142 individually illuminated star-motif breathing LEDs, flanked by full-width star-ring light bands and polygonal headlamps; the central three-pointed star emblem illuminates in sync, animating a dynamic "flowing galaxy" welcome sequence upon unlocking. Its side profile flaunts sleek four-door coupe lines, complemented by frameless doors and flush pop-out door handles. Over at the rear, it features full-width tail lamps housing three-pointed star signatures, while an integrated ducktail bootlid spoiler accentuates its sporty stance. Measuring 4,763 mm in length, 1,836 mm in width, and 1,471 mm in height with a 2,830 mm wheelbase, the long-wheelbase version gains an additional 40 mm between the axles over the standard model, alongside a 10 mm longer rear seat base for enhanced thigh support. Aerodynamic efficiency is rated at a slippery 0.21 Cd. Inside, the CLA EV departs drastically from its ICE counterpart, boasting a triple-screen dashboard setup comprising a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen, and a 14-inch front passenger entertainment screen.
Powertrain and Performance
Underpinned by the MMA EV-dedicated platform, the CLA EV runs on an 800V high-voltage architecture equipped with silicon carbide (SiC) inverters. The initial launch variant, the CLA 300 L, gets a rear-mounted single electric motor pushing 200 kW (272 PS), mated to a segment-first two-speed transmission—with 1st gear delivering robust low-end torque and 2nd gear halving motor revs during high-speed cruising for optimal efficiency. Juiced by an 89 kWh ternary lithium (NMC) battery pack, it achieves a CLTC-rated range of up to 866 km. Energy consumption is rated at an ultra-efficient 10.9 kWh/100 km. On the charging front, it supports DC fast charging at up to 320 kW, allowing a 370 km range top-up in just 10 minutes. Later at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2026, an entry-level CLA 260 L joined the lineup, delivering 165 kW (224 PS) paired with a 60 kWh battery for a 600 km CLTC range, significantly lowering the barrier of entry. Global markets also receive the dual-motor CLA 350 4MATIC AWD variant, outputting a combined 260 kW (354 PS) to dispatch the 0-100 km/h sprint in a brisk 4.9 seconds.
Chassis and Dynamics
The CLA EV adopts a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration. Suspension duties are handled by a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent setup. Courtesy of the 800V architecture and a low-slung battery placement, the chassis strikes a fine balance between dynamic handling and everyday pliancy, with the two-speed gearbox further enhancing high-speed motor efficiency and energy management. Braking is augmented by a high-efficiency regenerative system that harvests kinetic energy on deceleration. The body-in-white extensively utilises galvanised steel to yield superior anti-corrosion properties and double to triple the lifespan of standard steel, while the bonnet and front fenders are stamped from lightweight, high-tensile 6000-series aluminium alloy.
Cabin and Equipment
The cockpit runs on the proprietary MB.OS, powered by the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chipset. Highlights include MBUX immersive navigation and the upgraded Mercedes-Benz Virtual Assistant infused with 3D rendering and the Doubao AI large language model, supporting multi-zone natural voice recognition and seamless conversational barge-in. Cabin creature comforts include a head-up display (HUD), wireless smartphone charging pad, heated steering wheel, panoramic fixed glass roof, and 64-colour ambient lighting. Upper-tier trims gain the 14-inch front passenger display and an aggressive AMG Line exterior styling kit. Luggage practicality is well sorted, featuring a 101-litre front trunk (frunk) and a 405-litre rear boot capacity.
Safety and ADAS
The CLA EV features an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) co-developed with Chinese autonomous driving specialist Momenta. Hardware-wise, it employs an NVIDIA DRIVE Orin X chip (254 TOPS processing power) tied to a 27-sensor perception suite, delivering long-range target detection up to 180 metres. Powered by an end-to-end mapless algorithm, the system offers comprehensive urban and highway coverage, executing U-turns, unprotected turns, automated lane changes, as well as toll gate navigation. The Ultra-Long Range variant packs Highway Navigation on Autopilot (NOA), while the Smart Navigation flagship adds Urban NOA functionality. In crashworthiness, Mercedes-Benz performed 150 crash simulations to global benchmarks, supplemented by 30 dedicated crash tests tailored specifically to Chinese road conditions. In January 2026, the CLA EV bagged a full five-star Euro NCAP rating, emerging as the top-performing vehicle among all models tested in 2025. Additionally, it secured a five-star rating in the China Electric Vehicle Fire Safety Index following stringent battery nail-penetration assessments.
Market Reception and Performance
The CLA EV garnered strong critical acclaim globally upon its launch, taking home the coveted "European Car of the Year 2026" crown in January 2026. Back in China, however, market traction proved challenging, shifting only 358 units in March 2026. Industry observers noted that mainstream Chinese buyers remain cautious towards premium-brand EVs compared to domestic rivals. To rekindle momentum, Mercedes-Benz launched the entry-level CLA 260 L in April 2026 tagged at RM229,000, aiming to stimulate volume with sharper pricing. As a strategic technological spearhead for Mercedes-Benz, the CLA EV establishes a fresh benchmark in the premium compact electric sedan segment, driven by core breakthroughs like its 866 km range, 800V architecture, two-speed transmission, and the next-gen MB.OS platform.
