MINI Electric MINI COOPER

2026-09-28 15:40:00

The Electric MINI COOPER is an all-electric B-segment hatchback developed on the MINI brand's dedicated EV platform, produced at the Zhangjiagang plant by Spotlight Automotive—a joint venture between the BMW Group and Great Wall Motor. Officially launched in China in July 2024, it marks the MINI brand's first locally produced electric model. As of June 2026, the 2026 line-up offers two variants: the COOPER E Classic and COOPER SE Artist, with official retail prices of RM209,800 and RM239,800 respectively, alongside a limited-time promotional starting price of RM153,800. Positioned as a bespoke premium compact EV, it primarily targets urban commuters seeking distinct individuality and go-kart-like driving dynamics.

Design Language

The Electric MINI COOPER retains the iconic British design heritage synonymous with the marque. The front end sports a closed octagonal front grille flanked by sleek, circular LED headlamps. Its profile upholds the signature "wheels pushed to the four corners" stance, with the front and rear track widths widened by 38 mm and 37 mm respectively. A floating roof design, flush door handles, and frameless windows accentuate its athletic profile. In terms of exterior dimensions, it measures 3,858 mm long (3,863 mm for the PAUL SMITH Designer Edition), 1,756 mm wide, and 1,458 mm tall, riding on a 2,526 mm wheelbase. The drag coefficient stands at a low 0.28 Cd. Exterior paint finishes include six distinct options such as Melting Silver, British Racing Green, and Chili Red. Inside, the cabin embraces a minimalist, playful vibe centred around circular motifs, where an industry-first 240 mm-diameter circular OLED centre infotainment touchscreen replaces the conventional instrument binnacle as the digital focal point. Running on the latest MINI Operating System 9, the system features the interactive "Spike" virtual personal assistant. The cabin offers seven distinct "MINI Experience Modes", including Core, Go-Kart, Green, Balance, Timeless, and Personal. High-grade sustainable materials are used extensively throughout the interior, complemented by chequered-flag motifs and bucket seats with red contrast stitching. It features a 2+2 four-seater configuration.

Powertrain and Performance

The entire Electric MINI COOPER range adopts a front-mounted single-motor, front-wheel-drive (FWD) setup. The COOPER E Classic is powered by an electric motor producing 135 kW (approx. 184 PS) and 290 Nm of torque; the COOPER SE Artist, alongside the later-introduced PAUL SMITH Designer Edition and JCW Edition, delivers 160 kW (approx. 218 PS) and 330 Nm of torque. All variants are paired with a single-speed reduction gear transmission. Century sprint figures (0-100 km/h) stand at 8.1 seconds for the COOPER E and 7.1 seconds for the COOPER SE; top speeds are capped at 170 km/h and 180 km/h respectively. The range is powered by a 51.5 kWh ternary lithium-ion (NMC) battery pack sourced from SVOLT. On the CLTC cycle, the COOPER E delivers a rated driving range of up to 466 km, while the COOPER SE, Designer Edition, and JCW Edition are rated at 463 km. With DC fast charging, a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) replenishment takes as little as 30 minutes; a full AC recharge takes approximately 5.5 hours. Rated energy consumption stands at 12.3 kWh/100 km. The 2026 model year also upgrades on-board connectivity from 4G to 5G.

Chassis and Handling Dynamics

Underneath, the Electric MINI COOPER features a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The signature wheel-at-each-corner architecture, paired with short overhangs and the 2,526 mm wheelbase, delivers extremely agile, direct handling traits. A compact 5.4-metre turning radius ensures effortless U-turns and fuss-free manoeuvring in tight urban spaces. The steering is sharp and communicative, with virtually no on-centre deadzone. The chassis setup is tuned on the tauter side, offering direct road feedback and superior body control under cornering. Braking performance is handled by front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, complemented by an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold. Drivers can engage a dedicated "Go-Kart Mode" for ultra-responsive throttle mapping.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside the cabin, the 2026 Electric MINI COOPER comes standard with a 9.4-inch circular OLED central display. The system runs MINI Operating System 9 with full Over-The-Air (OTA) software update support. The COOPER E Classic comes well-specified as standard with auto LED headlights, a sports steering wheel with heating, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Detection/Lane Change Assist, Rear Collision Warning (RCW), Door Open Warning (DOW), and Auto Parking Assist. The higher-spec COOPER SE Artist adds a panoramic glass roof, interactive dynamic ambient lighting, keyless entry, UWB digital key, NFC keycard access, power-folding and heated side mirrors, 10-way power-adjustable front seats with heating and driver's memory, driver's power lumbar support with massage function, and a Qi wireless smartphone charger. Optional extras across the range include a 10-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, a 360-degree surround-view camera, and enhanced semi-autonomous driving assist packages. Luggage capacity is versatile, expanding from 210 litres to 800 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Safety and Driver Assistance Systems

On the passive safety front, the Electric MINI COOPER is equipped as standard with front dual airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. The high-voltage battery enclosure utilizes high-strength steel with dedicated integrated crash crumple zones. In the 2025 Euro NCAP safety assessments, the Electric MINI COOPER achieved the maximum five-star safety rating and was crowned "Best in Class". Breakdown scores include: 89% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 79% for Safety Assist, and 77% for Vulnerable Road Users. For active safety, standard kit includes Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Driver assistance features standard across the line-up include Cruise Control, Park Assist, and Reversing Assistant. Higher variants gain Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities, encompassing full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Stop & Go, Lane Change Assist, Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Centring Assist (LCA), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and Automated Park Assist.

Market Performance and Industry Verdict

The Electric MINI COOPER represents a cornerstone in the brand's electrification roadmap, built by Spotlight Automotive for global export markets. Total annual sales in 2025 reached 7,106 units; monthly sales peaked mid-year at roughly 2,000 units, before tapering off to 242 units in September 2025. By May 2026, the model ranked 12th in sales within its segment. While domestic sales in China have remained modest, the model has gained strong traction across 15 overseas export markets, with over 90% of locally assembled units destined for export. In June 2026, Spotlight Automotive marked a significant milestone as the 100,000th fully electric MINI rolled off the production line. The key selling points of the Electric MINI COOPER remain its unique British design pedigree, trademark go-kart handling, bespoke interior with the standout circular OLED screen, and five-star Euro NCAP safety credentials. On the flip side, criticisms focus on a firm, unforgiving ride over rough pavement, average cabin NVH insulation, and stiff price-to-spec competition from domestic Chinese EV rivals such as the BYD Dolphin.
