2026-10-10 19:00:00

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid (Range Rover Sport PHEV) is the electrified derivative of Jaguar Land Rover's (JLR) mid-to-large luxury performance SUV. Built on the third-generation Range Rover Sport platform (L461 generation), this model serves as a cornerstone of the brand’s electrification roadmap under its "Reimagine" strategy. The domestic-market version is brought in as a fully imported (CBU) model by Jaguar Land Rover China.

Model Overview

Slotted between the flagship Range Rover and the Range Rover Evoque, the Range Rover Sport PHEV is positioned as a mid-to-large luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. Its key appeal lies in seamlessly blending the Range Rover Sport’s dynamic handling and all-terrain prowess with the superior efficiency and zero-emissions electric drive of PHEV technology. The domestic market primarily offers the P550e powertrain. The 2025 P550e Edition was officially launched on 8 November 2024, tagged at an MSRP of RM1,360,000. The 2026 model subsequently debuted in China in March 2026, retaining the plug-in hybrid variant across the range. Configured as a five-seater, the SUV measures 4,946 mm in length, 2,047 mm in width, and 1,820 mm in height, with a 2,997 mm wheelbase.

Design Language

In terms of exterior styling, the Range Rover Sport PHEV stays faithful to its ICE counterparts, carrying forward the iconic Range Rover design DNA. The front end is defined by the family inverted trapezoidal grille with gloss-black honeycomb inserts, flanked by smoked headlamp clusters that blend neatly into the fascia. Hallmark styling cues such as the floating roof and flush deployable door handles have been retained, while the short front overhang and squarish silhouette underscore a muscular, planted stance. Around the back, it gets slim, smoked tail light clusters and an integrated dual-exhaust setup.

Inside, the cabin embraces a driver-centric, minimalist layout. It comes equipped with a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a floating central touchscreen. The centre console follows a clean T-shaped architecture, enriched with premium wood veneers, piano black trims, and carbon-fibre accents to elevate the luxury feel. A selection of premium upholstery options is available, including Windsor and Semi-Aniline leather. Owners have commended the cabin for striking a fine balance between minimalism and opulence, alongside a responsive, user-friendly touchscreen interface.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the skin, the Range Rover Sport PHEV pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. Codenamed PT306, the 2,996 cc powerplant features twin-charging via a turbocharger and an electric supercharger.

The combustion engine delivers a maximum output of 294 kW (400 PS) and 550 Nm of peak torque, while the electric motor produces 105 kW (143 PS). This yields a massive combined output of 404.5 kW (550 PS) and 900 Nm. Power is channelled through an 8-speed automatic transmission, enabling a century sprint (0-100 km/h) in just 4.9 seconds, on to a top speed of 242 km/h.

Energy is stored in a 38.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, delivering an all-electric range of up to 112 km on the WLTC cycle. Combined fuel consumption is rated as low as 2.4 L/100 km under WLTC testing. The vehicle supports both AC normal charging and DC fast charging, with the charging port positioned on the left rear quarter panel. It is backed by a 3-year or 100,000 km manufacturer warranty.

Chassis & Handling

The Range Rover Sport PHEV rides on Land Rover’s advanced lightweight architecture. It comes standard with Electronic Air Suspension and Adaptive Dynamics, which continuously adjust damping rates according to road surface and driving mode, striking an ideal compromise between on-road composure and off-road ride comfort. It also features Terrain Response® 2, which automatically configures vehicle settings across various modes: General Driving, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl.

Drivetrain duties are handled by a standard permanent all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. Off-road geometry is impressive, boasting an approach angle of 22.5°, a departure angle of 24.9°, a breakover angle of 21.5°, and a fully laden ground clearance of 216 mm. The SUV registers a kerb weight of 2,950 kg and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3,450 kg.

Cabin & Equipment

On the tech front, the Range Rover Sport PHEV comes standard with a 13.1-inch floating touchscreen running the latest Pivi Pro infotainment system, complete with Apple CarPlay connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and 5G connectivity. The driver gets a crisp, fully digital instrument panel.

For interior comfort, the power-adjustable front seats come with memory, heating, and ventilation functions, while the rear bench also benefits from seat heating. Four-zone automatic climate control, a panoramic glass roof, and customisable multi-colour ambient lighting are fitted as standard. Boot capacity stands at a generous 835 litres in standard configuration, expandable up to 1,491 litres with the rear seats folded down.

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

The Range Rover Sport PHEV meets top-tier luxury SUV standards in active safety and driver assistance, featuring a comprehensive Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite. Key features include Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC with Stop & Go), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA). Parking is made effortless via a 360-degree surround-view camera system and rear cross-traffic sensors. For passive safety, the vehicle is comprehensively fitted with a multi-airbag system, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA/BAS), and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), among other active chassis controls.

Market Performance & Summary

The Range Rover Sport PHEV continues to enjoy robust sales momentum globally. Within JLR’s lineup, the high-margin triumvirate comprising the Range Rover Sport, Range Rover, and Defender accounts for an impressive 76.7% of total global wholesale volume.

In the Chinese market, the Range Rover Sport PHEV is available as a fully imported CBU model, with the 2025 P550e Edition priced at RM1,360,000. The 2026 update arrived in March 2026, retaining the PHEV option across the range. Land Rover has also confirmed that a fully electric (BEV) Range Rover Sport is slated for debut in 2027.

Representing a pivotal milestone in the namplate's journey toward electrification, the Range Rover Sport PHEV retains the hallmark craftsmanship, engaging road manners, and legendary off-road capability of the brand. With 550 PS on tap, an all-electric range of 112 km, and combined fuel economy rated at just 2.4 L/100 km, it presents an appealing proposition for luxury SUV buyers seeking high performance alongside eco-conscious mobility.
