Luxgen

2026-08-17 20:40:01

Luxgen is an automotive brand from Taiwan, China, officially established by the Yulon Group in 2008. The brand name fuses "Luxury" and "Genius" (intelligence), signifying "human-centric intelligent luxury", a concept personally named by the late Yan Kaitai, former Chairman of the Yulon Group. At its inception, the brand was positioned as an ‘independent brand with innovative technology, transforming from a latecomer into a first mover to lead the world’. It produced a full range of vehicles, including SUVs, MPVs, sedans, and all-electric passenger cars. In 2010, Yulon and Dongfeng Motor established the Dongfeng Yulon joint venture, marking Luxgen’s official entry into the mainland Chinese market. In December 2025, HMG Advanced acquired Luxgen Motors for NT$787.6 million. As of May 2026, the Luxgen brand is gradually withdrawing from new vehicle manufacturing, with the n7 becoming its final electric vehicle model; the brand’s role has shifted to supporting HMG Advanced in building a comprehensive value-chain experience for electric vehicles in Taiwan.

Development History

Preparations for the Yulon Group’s Luxgen project began with the establishment of HuaChuang Automotive Electronics in 2005. This initiative gathered over a thousand R&D personnel, laying the technical foundation for Taiwan’s independent car brand. On 24 February 2008, the Yulon Group and Zhejiang Zhongyu Group officially signed the Luxgen Hangzhou Automotive Production Project, establishing a factory in the Linjiang Industrial Park in Xiaoshan, Hangzhou. The brand was officially launched in January 2009, simultaneously releasing its first electric vehicle, the Luxgen7 MPV EV+, thereby showcasing the technical capabilities of this independent brand in the field of electrification.

In December 2010, Dongfeng Motor and the Yulon Group established Dongfeng Yulon as a joint venture with a registered capital of RMB 1.55 billion. In 2011, the first model, the Luxgen Big 7 SUV, went on sale, entering the SUV market with forward-looking features such as dual 10.2-inch smart screens and the Night Vision+ system. In 2012, Dongfeng Yulon introduced MPV and sedan product lines, successively launching the Luxgen Big 7 MPV and the Luxgen 5 Sedan. Between 2013 and 2017, major models such as the U6 SUV, U5 SUV, and URX were launched. However, due to fierce market competition and declining product competitiveness, the brand’s performance in the mainland market began to decline from 2018 onwards.

Luxgen encountered a reputation crisis due to long-standing shortcomings in fuel consumption control. Taking the Big 7 SUV as an example, while the official fuel consumption was stated at approximately 8.9 L/100 km, actual owner tests generally recorded figures of 16–20 L/100 km, exceeding 22 L/100 km even in extreme traffic congestion. The brand became the subject of numerous online jokes regarding its powertrain matching, described as ‘a small horse pulling a large cart’, leading to infamous internet memes such as ‘Sinopec’s Strategic Partner’, which severely damaged the brand’s reputation. In November 2020, Dongfeng Yulon officially entered bankruptcy liquidation, and Luxgen effectively exited the mainland market.

Following the passing of Yan Kaitai in late 2018, Yan Chen-Lilian succeeded him as Executive Chairman of the Yulon Group. She decisively promoted the group’s transformation to cut losses, pushing for the establishment of HMG Advanced as a joint venture between HuaChuang Automotive Electronics and Foxconn Precision Industrial. This shift moved the focus of the Luxgen brand entirely from fuel vehicles to electrification, paving the way for the subsequent restructuring and sale of brand assets.

On 19 December 2025, HMG Advanced announced the full acquisition of Yulon’s Luxgen Motors for NT$787.6 million. While the Yulon Group retained the LUXGEN trademark rights, Luxgen’s channels, five sales outlets, and after-sales teams were incorporated into HMG Advanced. HMG Advanced stated that the n7 would be the last electric vehicle model under the Luxgen brand, with no new Luxgen-branded vehicles to be launched in the future. Subject to regulatory approval, the transaction is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2026.

Product Lineup

The Luxgen product system encompasses multiple classic models from the fuel era and all-electric products from the electrification era, covering SUVs, MPVs, and sedans.

Among fuel vehicles, the Big 7 SUV is the brand’s most representative flagship model. Built on a self-developed Yulon chassis and equipped with a 2.2T engine, it was differentiated by class-leading configurations such as 10.2-inch dual screens and a 360-degree surround-view system. However, it became the brand’s most controversial model due to high fuel consumption and reputational issues. The U6 SUV once achieved considerable sales in the mainland market. In 2025, the U6 NEO mid-life refresh was launched with a guide price starting from NT$758,000. The URX represents the brand’s final-generation fuel SUV, fully integrating ADAS advanced driver assistance systems and ARD head-up displays, maintaining the brand’s presence during the twilight of the fuel era.

The MPV product line features a dual-level layout for consumer and business segments, anchored by the Big 7 MPV and subsequent models. The sedan line includes the Luxgen 5 Sedan and its successors. Around 2011, Luxgen’s product planning included a complete development roadmap for A-, B-, C-, and D-segment passenger cars, but most of these plans did not reach mass production due to strategic contraction.

In the electrification era, the Luxgen n7 is the brand’s only mass-produced electric vehicle. Built on the HMG Advanced Model C prototype, it is positioned as a ‘National Electric Touring Car within NT$1 million’. Official deliveries began in March 2024. In December 2025, it received a five-star safety rating from TNCAP at an auto show, unlocking the RPA remote parking assist system and enabling OTA upgrades.

The n7 LR Long Range Version was released in May 2026, offering a WLTP range of approximately 711 km and adopting CCS2 charging specifications. The available versions are: the ‘Essence Edition’ at NT$1.199 million, the ‘Essence+ Edition’ at NT$1.249 million, the 5-seater ‘Highlight Edition’ at NT$1.449 million, and the 7-seater ‘Highlight Edition’ at NT$1.499 million.

Market Performance

Luxgen surpassed the 100,000-unit sales milestone in the mainland market in 2019, becoming a significant force in the SUV sub-segment. However, sales declined sharply shortly thereafter.

In the Taiwan market, the n7 has performed steadily. Sales data indicates that in 2024, the n7 delivered a total of 7,121 units; in 2025, 3,431 units were delivered, bringing the two-year cumulative total to approximately 10,500 units. The brand’s monthly delivery volume typically fluctuates between 300 and 500 units. In October 2025, the n7 ranked first in Taiwan’s monthly electric vehicle sales with 242 units; in December 2025, it firmly held second place with 390 units, trailing only Tesla. Entering 2026, monthly deliveries were 128 units in January and 82 units in February. HMG Advanced expects to gradually resume delivery momentum after the second quarter of 2026 through market strategy adjustments and new product launches.

Core Technologies

From its inception, Luxgen drove R&D through the integration of ‘Vehicle + Smart Technology + Energy Technology’. HuaChuang Automotive Electronics commenced independent chassis development early on, building a complete product platform ranging from SUVs to sedans during the fuel era. In terms of intelligent technology, it was among the first to introduce twelve assisted driving technologies, AR head-up displays, electronic parking brakes, and other innovative functions. Regarding collision safety, the Luxgen U5 was independently tested by the Spanish IDIADA International Laboratory according to European standards. The n7 further demonstrated the strength of Taiwan’s independent brands in passive safety with its five-star TNCAP rating.

Luxgen’s electrification core technologies rely heavily on the HMG Advanced platform. The n7 adopts a rear-wheel-drive single-motor architecture, with a maximum power of 231 horsepower, a NEDC range of 505 km, and support for 150 kW fast charging. High-end models are equipped with V2L external power supply functions. Following the 2026 model’s OTA upgrade, the overall intelligence level was further enhanced. The n7 LR Long Range Version is equipped with higher energy-density batteries, features standard CCS2 charging, and offers significantly reduced energy consumption costs per kilometre.

Global Layout

Overseas exports played a significant role in Luxgen’s early development. From 2009 to the early 2010s, the Yulon Group set a goal of exporting one thousand complete vehicles annually from Taiwan, successfully opening export channels in the Middle East (Bahrain), Southeast Asia (Vietnam), and Central America (Dominican Republic). At the brand’s peak, it had fully expanded into cross-strait and Middle Eastern markets, while also entering South American and other Southeast Asian markets.

With the exit from the mainland market and the brand’s transformation, the focus of the global layout has been taken over by HMG Advanced’s FOXTRON brand. In the future, the new FOXTRON BRIA vehicle is planned for global export, with the initial stage targeting right-hand drive markets such as Australia and New Zealand. The original overseas network of Luxgen has not continued vehicle exports under the LUXGEN name.

Future Outlook

Upon the completion of the transaction in the first quarter of 2026, the Luxgen brand begins its transformation from a complete vehicle manufacturer to brand asset management. The Yulon Group retains the LUXGEN trademark rights and continues the sales and after-sales service of the n7 and related vehicles through a sales agency arrangement entrusted to HMG Advanced. HMG Advanced has clearly stated that it will not launch new models under the Luxgen brand. The new electric vehicle brand, FOXTRON BRIA, will be officially launched in the 2026 market based on the Model B platform.

HMG Advanced leverages the dual strengths of the Foxconn Group’s ICT industry chain advantages and Yulon’s complete vehicle R&D capabilities. With CDMS (Contract Design and Manufacturing Service) as its core business model, it outputs complete vehicle R&D, contract manufacturing, and mature brand architecture solutions to global automakers. Luxgen, serving as the link for sales and after-sales services within this structure, has completed its historical mission. Over a development cycle of more than ten years, Luxgen transformed from a challenger bearing the burden of a high-end independent brand into a transitioner witnessing the handover of Taiwan’s automotive industry from traditional manufacturing to the intelligent electric era. Finally, after completing asset restructuring, it smoothly transitioned into the FOXTRON era, handing over the mission and moving towards deeper cooperation in the global electric vehicle industry.
