Model Overview

The Kia Cerato is a global strategic C-segment sedan from South Korean automaker Kia. Since its debut in 2004, it has spanned multiple generations and has been marketed under various nameplates globally. The Cerato marked Kia's first A+ segment sedan offering in the European and North American markets. In 2005, it was locally assembled in China via Kia's joint venture, Dongfeng Yueda Kia, and badged as the "Sailatu". Since then, the model line has seen several iterations in China: the second-generation model (2009) was marketed as the "Forte", whilst the third generation (2012 onwards) took on the "K3" nameplate. In overseas markets like Australia, the 2023 Cerato is priced from approximately RM132,000 to RM182,400. In terms of dimensions, the 2026 Cerato measures 4,510–4,640 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,435–1,445 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,700 mm.
Design Language
The Cerato's exterior styling mirrors the evolution of Kia's global design language. Following its mid-life facelift in 2021, the Cerato drew heavy design cues from the Kia K5 Optima, sporting a wider front grille and sleeker, sharper headlamps. The overseas version features a slimmer front grille seamlessly integrated with the headlamp clusters, flanked by dot-matrix LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Over at the rear, it gets a full-width connected LED taillight bar alongside Kia's redesigned corporate emblem. The 2023 Cerato is offered in both sedan and 5-door hatchback bodystyles. The range-topping GT variant rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and gains a bespoke GT bodykit, twin exhaust tailpipes, and a rear diffuser. Inside, higher-spec variants feature a black cabin enhanced with contrasting red stitching for a sportier ambience, complemented by a sports steering wheel. The dashboard is anchored by a 10.25-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment display.
Powertrain & Performance
Globally, the Cerato is offered with a choice of powertrains depending on the market:
1.6L Naturally Aspirated Engine: Produces 123 PS and 154 Nm of torque, paired with a CVT gearbox. In selected markets, it is tuned to deliver 150 PS and 196 Nm.
2.0L Naturally Aspirated Engine: Delivers 112 kW (approx. 150 PS) and 192 Nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. This unit is standard on the S, Sport, and Sport+ variants.
1.6T Turbocharged Engine (GT Variant) : Churns out 150 kW (approx. 204 PS) and 265 Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) driving the front wheels.
In terms of fuel efficiency, the 1.6L variant returns a combined fuel consumption of roughly 14.5 km/L (approx. 6.9 L/100 km), while the 2.0L version is rated at around 13.5 km/L (approx. 7.4 L/100 km).
Chassis & Handling
Under the skin, standard variants employ a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup. The performance-oriented GT variant is upgraded with an independent rear multi-link setup, paired with a sports-tuned suspension and steering calibration. It retains a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout. Its electric power steering (EPS) setup is quick-ratioed on the GT variant at just 2.5 turns lock-to-lock for sharper handling responses. Braking performance on the GT is handled by upgraded, larger front brake discs. The car boasts a tight turning radius of roughly 5.3 metres.
Cabin & Equipment
In-cabin technology remains one of the Cerato's key selling points. Following its 2021 update, the Cerato features a twin 10.25-inch screen setup comprising a fully digital instrument cluster and a floating central touchscreen. The infotainment unit supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, onboard satellite navigation, and Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates. The flagship GT trim is equipped with an 8-speaker JBL premium sound system. In terms of creature comforts, high-spec variants come loaded with keyless entry with push-start ignition, leather upholstery, ventilated and heated front seats, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat with memory function, a sunroof, a wireless smartphone charger, an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB), and Auto Brake Hold. The GT variant further adds a leather flat-bottom sports steering wheel and alloy sports pedals. On sedan models, a smart powered boot lid is also available.
Safety & Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the Cerato comes standard with 6 airbags across the range. For active safety, it is equipped with Kia's advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), offering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capabilities. Key features include Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) , Lane Centring Assist (LCA) , Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) with vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist detection, Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). In selected markets, a reverse camera and front and rear parking sensors are also fitted as standard.
Market Performance & Verdict
Since its inception in 2004, the Kia Cerato has proven to be a solid global sales success. Within just one year of its North American and European launch, it surpassed 100,000 units in sales and clinched the prestigious Canadian Car of the Year accolade. In China, following its local assembly debut in 2005 under the "Sailatu" nameplate, its competitive pricing (RM63,800–RM137,800) made it a popular household choice. The nameplate subsequently evolved into the "Forte" and "K3" in that market. Overseas, the 2026 Cerato continues to soldier on in regions such as Australia and the Middle East. The Cerato's standout strengths lie in its broad powertrain lineup, comprehensive active safety suite, and excellent value for money; on the flip side, hard plastics in the cabin and modest brand prestige remain its main shortcomings. As a pillar of Kia's global expansion, the Cerato continues to hold its ground as a compelling contender in the global compact sedan segment thanks to its well-rounded package and continuous product enhancements.
