Kia Carnival

2026-10-10 20:30:00

The Kia Carnival is a mid-to-large MPV under Yueda Kia. The nameplate made its debut in 1998 as South Korea's first full-size MPV, positioned primarily for global markets. In September 2021, the fourth-generation Carnival was officially launched in China by Dongfeng Yueda Kia via completely knocked-down (CKD) local assembly. The 2026 model currently on sale made its debut on 1 September 2025, marking the first annual facelift since the fourth-generation model entered local production.

Model Overview

Positioned as a mid-to-large MPV, the Carnival highlights a spacious, comfortable seven-seater cabin, generous tech equipment, and high value for money, with primary rivals including the Buick GL8, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota Granvia. The 2026 line-up offers four variants: Luxury Edition, Luxury Tech Edition, Luxury Premium Edition, and Flagship Edition, with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM288,900 to RM339,900. Notably, the Luxury Tech Edition was available at a subsidised campaign price of RM218,900 during a limited-time promotion in September 2025. In terms of dimensions, it measures 5,155 mm in length, 1,995 mm in width, and 1,795 mm in height (inclusive of roof rails), riding on a 3,090 mm wheelbase. The MPV adopts a 2+2+3 seven-seater layout with a kerb weight of 2,095 kg.

Design Language

The 2026 Carnival carries over the styling cues from the fourth-generation mid-cycle facelift. Up front, it sports Kia's signature Tiger Nose grille, imposing in size with a parametric dot-matrix insert that blends seamlessly into the vertically stacked LED headlight assemblies on either side. The headlights feature sharp outlines with inverted L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs), echoing the design identity of Kia's flagship EV9 electric SUV. In profile, it exhibits clean, straight character lines with classic short-front and long-rear overhang proportions, paired with expansive side windows and functional roof rails. Around the back, the MPV features a full-width LED light bar taillight cluster, complemented by a silver skid plate on the rear bumper. Four exterior colours are available: Aurora Black, Interstellar Grey, Star Rain Blue, and Pearl White, while the interior offers three dual-tone themes: Black-Grey, Beige-Brown, and Black-Brown.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the 2026 Carnival comes standard across the range with a Smartstream 2.0T turbocharged petrol engine, delivering a maximum output of 233 PS (171.4 kW) and a peak torque of 353 Nm. Power is channelled through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption is rated at 8.75 L/100 km under the WLTC combined test cycle, running on RON 92 petrol. The vehicle offers four selectable drive modes: Comfort, Eco, Sport, and Smart. Top speed is rated at 205 km/h.

It is worth noting that the Carnival in overseas markets offers a wider powertrain selection, including a 3.5-litre V6 naturally aspirated petrol engine (214 kW / 352 Nm) and a 1.6T petrol-electric hybrid system (180 kW / 367 Nm). However, the locally assembled Carnival in China remains exclusively available with the single 2.0T powertrain.

Chassis & Handling

The Carnival is underpinned by Kia's 3rd-generation i-GMP platform. Suspension duties are handled by a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The chassis tuning is biased towards ride comfort, effectively isolating cabin occupants from road imperfections. It is front-wheel drive (FWD) and comes equipped with Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS). The braking system features front ventilated discs and rear solid discs, shod with 235/60 R18 tyres.

Cabin & Equipment

Inside, the dashboard is dominated by a dual 12.3-inch integrated widescreen display combining a fully digital instrument cluster and a central infotainment touchscreen. Infotainment is driven by the Kia Connect & Baidu Intelligent Connectivity System 3.0, supporting tri-zone voice control, real-time connected navigation, telematics remote control, Car-to-Home IoT connectivity, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. Gear selection is operated via a shift-by-wire rotary gear dial.

The seats are trimmed in plush Nappa leather. Both the driver's seat and second-row captain chairs feature 12-way power adjustment (including 4-way lumbar support) along with 3-stage seat heating and ventilation functions. The second row is further equipped with aviation-style headrests and a one-touch relaxation mode. The third row consists of full-size seats with 60:40 sink-in folding, which stow completely flat into the boot floor when folded. Boot capacity can expand from 627 litres to 1,793 litres. A total of 7 USB ports are provided throughout the cabin. The 2026 model adds a front Qi wireless charging pad. Higher-spec grades also feature Passenger Talk in-car intercom, Passenger View camera, and Quiet Mode. Dual luxury electric sunroofs come standard across the range.

Safety & Intelligent Driving

On the passive safety front, the Carnival's 3rd-generation i-GMP platform incorporates 1,500 MPa hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel across 14 structural points. 7 airbags come standard across all variants, including dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length curtain airbags, and a driver's knee airbag.

In terms of active safety, the MPV is equipped with a Level 2 ADAS suite offering over 10 advanced functions:

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) (supports vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, and junction oncoming traffic detection)

  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA)

  • Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA)

  • Highway Driving Assist (HDA)

  • Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control (NSCC) (anticipates bends, inclines, and speed limits in advance)

  • Lane Following Assist (LFA)

  • Safe Exit Assist (SEA)

  • Rear Occupant Alert (ROA)

  • 360-degree Surround View Monitor (SVM) (higher-spec variants)

In addition, the vehicle is equipped with dual anti-pinch smart power sliding doors, a smart powered tailgate, tri-zone automatic climate control with cabin air purification, Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Market Performance & Evaluation

Globally, the Kia Carnival has surpassed cumulative sales of over 2.5 million units, maintaining strong commercial success in markets like North America. However, in the Chinese market, its performance has been lacklustre. Full-year sales registered 2,129 units in 2024, declining to just 1,280 units throughout 2025, and falling further to 62 units in March 2026. Monthly sales have failed to cross the 100-unit threshold since December 2025.

Market analyses indicate that the Carnival's subdued reception in China stems from several factors: diminishing brand presence—Kia's overall brand equity in the Chinese market has been waning; prolonged product update cycle—a four-year hiatus between its 2021 CKD launch and its first model-year facelift in 2026; intense segment competition—class benchmarks such as the Toyota Sienna and Buick GL8 consistently achieve monthly sales exceeding 10,000 units; and a restricted powertrain line-up—the Chinese market is limited to a sole 2.0T engine, whereas overseas markets enjoy both V6 and hybrid choices.

Despite its modest sales numbers, the Carnival retains considerable product merits—its long 3,090 mm wheelbase delivers generous cabin space, while the Nappa leather seating and extensive comfort amenities ensure a refined travel experience. Furthermore, its Level 2 ADAS suite and 7-airbag safety net meet contemporary class standards. As a global MPV nameplate with over 25 years of heritage, while the Carnival continues to thrive in overseas markets, it faces the practical challenge of recalibrating brand appeal and product positioning in China.
