Buick GL8

2026-10-07 07:40:00

The Buick GL8 is a large MPV from SAIC-GM Buick. Since its local production was introduced by SAIC-GM in 1999, it has evolved over more than two decades into an iconic model in China's MPV market, widely dubbed the "Land Business Class". As of June 2026, the GL8 line-up has expanded into two petrol-powered series: the Land Business Class and Lu Zun, alongside new plug-in hybrid variants: the Lu Shang and Lu Zun PHEV. Official recommended retail pricing for the 2026 model range spans from RM199,900 to RM399,900, with cash rebates of RM15,000 to RM30,000 widely offered across dealerships. Key rivals include premium MPVs such as the Toyota Sienna, Denza D9, and GAC Trumpchi M8.

Design Language

The 2026 GL8 offers differentiated exterior styling across its line-up. The Land Business Class takes a utilitarian approach, featuring a front fascia with a horizontal chrome wing grille and integrated headlights for an understated, steady stance. The Lu Zun series leans towards luxury, sporting a massive parametric chrome grille and wing-shaped LED headlights with sequential welcome lighting upon unlocking. Its side profile is sleek and elongated, where the 5,219 mm overall length and straight shoulder line work together to maximise cabin space. The rear is defined by full-width LED tail lights. In terms of dimensions, it measures 5,219 × 1,878 × 1,807 mm (L × W × H) with a 3,088 mm wheelbase. Inside, the range-topping Lu Zun series features an enveloping luxury layout lavishly trimmed in Nappa leather with delicate stitching, complemented by 121-colour ambient lighting.

Powertrain & Performance

The 2026 GL8 is offered with both pure petrol and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The petrol version is powered across the board by an eighth-generation Ecotec 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with cylinder deactivation, pushing out 174 kW (237 PS) and 350 Nm of torque. Power is sent through a 9-speed HYDRA-MATIC automatic gearbox. The Lu Zun series adds a 48V mild-hybrid system, completing the 0-100 km/h sprint in 9.6 seconds, while the pure-petrol Land Business Class clocks 9.2 seconds. Under the WLTC test cycle, combined fuel consumption for the Lu Zun 48V mild hybrid is rated at 8.12-8.2 L/100 km, while the Land Business Class registers 8.8 L/100 km. The entire petrol range requires minimum RON 95 petrol.

The plug-in hybrid variants (GL8 Lu Zun PHEV / Lu Shang PHEV) utilise the "True Dragon" PHEV system combining a 1.5-litre turbo engine with an electric motor. The Lu Zun PHEV packs a 34.8 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery delivering a CLTC pure electric range of 202 km, whereas the Lu Shang PHEV features a 24.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack for a 142 km electric range. Cruising range on a full tank and full charge reaches up to 1,450 km, with a low-battery fuel consumption of just 6.68 L/100 km. Both variants support 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging.

Chassis & Handling

Underneath, the entire GL8 range rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The switch to a multi-link rear axle yields substantial gains in ride comfort and road bump compliance. Chassis tuning is distinctly comfort-biased, which, paired with Buick's signature NVH insulation, effortlessly soaks up road imperfections. Steering response is light yet accurate, while a 5.6-metre turning radius ensures this 5.2-metre-plus MPV remains surprisingly manoeuvrable during urban U-turns and tight parking manoeuvres. The entire line-up features a front-engine, front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout.

Cabin & Equipment

The interior represents the biggest upgrade for the 2026 GL8. The Lu Zun series receives an EYEMAX 30-inch integrated curved 6K display as standard, powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor for slick, responsive operation. The infotainment suite supports full-scenario voice control and AI large-language-model integration. Entry-level Land Business Class and Lu Shang PHEV variants make do with smaller central screens. Seating comes in a 2+2+3 seven-seater configuration. The second row houses individual captain seats with multi-way power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions on higher trims. High-spec models further add a 15.6-inch roof-mounted rear entertainment screen, a 12-speaker BOSE sound system, 128-colour ambient lighting, and a sliding smart island console housing a hot/cold box and wireless charging pad. Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and acoustic laminated double-glazed windows come standard across the range, ensuring supreme cabin refinement. Boot capacity stands at 521 litres, expanding to 1,650 litres with the third-row seats folded.

Safety & Driver Assistance

For passive safety, the GL8 is engineered with a 75% high-strength steel safety cage, utilising 1,500 MPa thermoformed ultra-high-strength steel for the critical A- and B-pillars. Front, front side, and full-length curtain airbags are fitted as standard across all variants. In terms of active safety and driver aids, the Lu Zun series comes standard with the Level 2 eCruise advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). The suite comprises full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (0-130 km/h), Lane Keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Change Assist, and Traffic Sign Recognition. The flagship Luxury trim gains active lane change assist, automated highway ramp exit, and Navigation on Pilot (NoP) capabilities. A 540-degree panoramic surround-view monitor with transparent chassis view is standard across the board. Note that the Land Business Class series gets a pared-down active safety kit, which prospective buyers should bear in mind.

Market Performance & Verdict

The Buick GL8 remains the undisputed benchmark of China's MPV segment. As of June 2026, cumulative sales in China have crossed the 1.8 million-unit mark. Throughout 2025, combined deliveries of petrol and PHEV variants topped 112,000 units, maintaining its commanding lead in the MPV segment. Of these, the GL8 ES Lu Zun alone accounted for 63,958 units in 2025. Buick's total sales volume in China reached 436,729 units in 2025, representing a 21% year-on-year growth.

The GL8's core strengths stem from its over-two-decade legacy and stellar executive reputation as the "Land Business Class", best-in-class cabin space courtesy of its 5.2-metre-plus footprint and 3,088 mm wheelbase, proven 2.0T+9AT petrol powertrain alongside competitive PHEV electrification options, an advanced digital cockpit powered by the 30-inch 6K curved display and 8155 chip, and Buick's class-leading NVH quietness. On the flip side, the petrol range requires pricier RON 95 fuel, routine maintenance for the Land Business Class series remains relatively steep (around RM18,085 over 60,000 km), and entry-level variants miss out on some smart cabin tech. All told, bolstered by deep market equity and continuous product refinements, the GL8 comfortably retains its near-unassailable benchmark status in the RM250,000 to RM400,000 premium MPV segment.
