Kawei (KAWEI AUTO) is a Chinese automotive brand under Jiangsu Kawei Automotive Industry Group Co., Ltd., headquartered in Danyang, Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. Guided by its founding philosophy of "high starting-point entrepreneurship, high-tech foundation, and high-standard enterprise growth", and anchored by technical expertise accumulated from auto parts manufacturing, the brand has progressively evolved into a distinctive automotive industrial platform. Its operations encompass light vehicles (pick-up trucks, SUVs), new energy vehicles (NEVs), commercial buses, special-purpose vehicles, an integrated automotive body parts supply chain, automotive financing, and export business. The Kawei brand emblem features an abstract "soaring eagle" motif, symbolising the brand's relentless drive for excellence and ambition to scale greater heights.

Development History
Kawei's history dates back to September 1992, when founder Meng Minghua established the Jiepai Safety Lamp Factory in Jiepai Town, Danyang, Jiangsu Province, primarily producing automotive lighting and plastic components to kick-start Kawei's automotive venture. From 1992 to the early 2000s, Kawei leveraged auto parts manufacturing as its core foundation to gradually expand its business scope. In March 2002, the establishment of Jiangsu Kawei Auto Parts Co., Ltd. marked a crucial milestone towards group-level operations. Over the ensuing years, Kawei obtained ISO9001 quality management certification (2003), deployed an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, secured China Compulsory Certification (3C) in 2006, and achieved TS16949 quality management accreditation in 2007, systematically strengthening its corporate governance and operational certifications.
In March 2005, Kawei established a complete-vehicle and auto parts R&D centre in partnership with the Automotive Research Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, initiating its expansion from component manufacturing to complete vehicle production. In 2009, Jiangsu Kawei Special Purpose Vehicle Manufacturing Co., Ltd. was officially established, marking its foray into specialized and purpose-built vehicle manufacturing, broadening its lineup to include fire engines, engineering vehicles, and related equipment. The year 2013 marked a major turning point for the brand: Kawei completed a strategic transition into the light vehicle manufacturing sector and debuted its first self-developed pick-up truck, the Kawei K1. This marked the brand's formal entry into the passenger vehicle market, successfully transitioning from a component supplier into a full-fledged vehicle manufacturer. Following this milestone, Kawei continued to expand its lineup to encompass pick-up trucks, SUVs, commercial buses, new energy vehicles, and special-purpose vehicles. The company also collaborated with Hummer China to introduce electric Hummer vehicles into the Chinese market, while concurrently developing and manufacturing in-house NEV models based on existing platforms.
Brand Matrix / Product Lineup
Kawei's vehicle portfolio covers pick-up trucks, SUVs, new energy vehicles, buses, and special-purpose vehicles. Anchored on differentiation through innovation and uniqueness, the brand has developed a distinct product lineup.
The pick-up truck series represents Kawei's most defining vehicle segment. Launched in 2013, the Kawei K1 was China's first American-style wide-body pick-up truck, measuring 5,560 mm in length and 1,850 mm in width. Built with an SUV-style body-on-frame structure and incorporating Mitsubishi chassis technology, it offered both petrol and diesel engine options. The Kawei K150 and K150GT sustained this American wide-body styling ethos. Due to its rugged exterior styling, the K150GT earned the moniker "China's Raptor". Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, it was offered in 2WD and 4WD configurations, with prices ranging from RM99,800 to RM135,800.
The SUV range comprises several models. The Kawei W1, a compact SUV unveiled in 2014, features a rugged ladder-frame chassis with hardcore off-road styling, measuring 4,620 × 1,860 × 1,830 mm with a 2,730 mm wheelbase. Initially powered by Mitsubishi 2.0L and 2.4L naturally aspirated petrol engines, a 2.0T turbocharged variant was subsequently introduced in 2017. The Louis compact SUV, competitively priced between RM79,800 and RM99,800, served as the brand's entry-level SUV offering.
New energy vehicle (NEV) models represent a strategic priority for Kawei. The Kawei EV1 is the brand's first all-electric SUV; built on the W1 platform and positioned as an upper-market electric passenger vehicle, it delivered an NEDC operating range of 250 km and also spawned an all-electric police pursuit variant. The Kawei EV7 is an all-electric double-cab pick-up truck measuring 5.56 metres in length, equipped with a pure electric powertrain delivering a range of 350 km and priced at around RM259,800. Additionally, Kawei rolled out various NEV models including the E20, E10, and EV7, spanning both passenger car and commercial vehicle segments.
Special-purpose vehicles remain Kawei's traditional stronghold, spanning fire engines, tipper trucks, specialised passenger panel vans, light buses, as well as medium and large coaches. Kawei boasts robust R&D expertise in the fire appliance sector, backed by an engineering team led by specialists from the Air Force Equipment Research Institute; its high-output turbojet fire engine received 3C certification in 2010.
Market Performance
Kawei Auto established an extensive nationwide sales network in China, comprising over 1,000 complete vehicle and component dealerships. In the pick-up truck segment, the Kawei K1 carved out a unique competitive edge in the domestic market with its American wide-body stance and rugged off-road chassis. In the special-purpose vehicle and bus sectors, Kawei generated sales revenue of RM1,500,000,000 in 2015 and recorded full-year sales exceeding RM1,300,000,000 in 2017. However, Kawei's market presence in the mainstream passenger car sector remained modest, leading some industry observers to identify the marque as one facing consolidation and market pressures. Overall, supported by its diversified business footprint, Kawei Auto has maintained a resilient operating base primarily across the pick-up truck and special-purpose vehicle sectors.
Core Technologies
Kawei Auto has sustained steady investments in technological research and development, building up a substantial intellectual property portfolio spanning complete vehicle manufacturing, new energy vehicles, and special-purpose vehicles. Industry data indicates that Kawei holds between 200 and 400 patents alongside 80 to over 100 certifications, with multiple offerings recognised as provincial-level high-tech products.
In the field of new energy vehicle engineering, Kawei filed a patent application in 2016 for "A Hybrid Electric Vehicle with a High-Performance Battery Enclosure", featuring technological innovations in battery thermal management and anti-vibration electrical contacts to enhance operational safety and stability. In 2017, Kawei applied for an invention patent for "A Powertrain System and Control Method for Range-Extended Electric Vehicles", designed to intelligently manage battery charging and power distribution based on real-time driving conditions, thereby optimising range, fuel economy, and battery service life. In addition, Kawei holds multiple patents covering low-voltage power cut-off devices and intelligent safety control systems for electric vehicles, spanning key technical nodes across the electric drive, battery, and electronic control ("three-electric") ecosystem.
In terms of industry-academia collaboration, Kawei has partnered with institutions including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Changchun Automotive Research Institute Testing Centre, the Air Force Aviation Equipment Research Institute, and the Armed Police Academy. It has assembled an R&D team anchored by doctoral researchers, master's degree holders, and industry veterans, continuously driving new product innovation and technological advancements.
