The Refine M3 is an economical commercial MPV rolled out by JAC Refine tailored for entrepreneurs, small business owners, and SMEs; officially launched in March 2015, it highlights core strengths such as low fuel consumption, a cavernous cabin, and dependable safety. The line-up is split into two series: the Refine M3 and Refine M3 PLUS. Leveraging product attributes of a 'long wheelbase, expansive space, punchy performance, and high payload capacity' alongside a '7-seater + 9-seater' seating layout, the PLUS version is specifically engineered for business owners seeking a practical workhorse that can 'haul well, save cost, and maximise earnings'. Following continuous iterations, the Refine M3 saw the debut of its 2022 iteration at the Chengdu Motor Show in August 2021, positioned as a 'pioneer in RM100,000-class connected mobility'. Today, it has evolved into a diversified powertrain matrix spanning petrol, HEV, and PHEV options, with standard body dimensions measuring 4,645 mm / 4,715 mm in length, 1,765 mm in width, and 1,900 mm in height, riding on a 2,810 mm wheelbase.
Styling-wise, the Refine M3 carries forward the bold and understated design language of the Refine MPV stable. Up front, it features an integrated bumper paired with a dual-slat chrome front grille, with the trim strips flanking the badge seamlessly merging into the headlamps to create an upscale, layered visual effect. The vehicle comes standard with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and manual headlamp levelling. The side profile sports clean, straight character lines running from front to rear, complemented by high-profile tyres that accentuate the robust, sturdy stance typical of a commercial MPV. The rear styling is clean and functional, with LED tail lamps enhancing night-time driving safety.
Inside, the dashboard adopts a dual-tone black-and-silver finish, delivering a clean, modern layout with clearly demarcated switchgear. Selected higher-spec variants feature a 10.25-inch floating central touchscreen infotainment system supporting satellite navigation, Bluetooth hands-free, telematics, and over-the-air (OTA) updates. The cabin incorporates leatherette upholstery along with piano black and chrome trim across key touchpoints to elevate tactile quality, while the instrument cluster retains a traditional analogue gauge setup.
The Refine M3 provides an exceptionally diverse powertrain selection to cater to various commercial applications. Pure petrol models are headlined by a 1.5T turbocharged petrol engine and a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, both mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The 1.5T powerplant (code HFC4GB2-4E) complies with China VI emission standards, delivering 110 kW (approx. 150 PS) and a peak torque of 210 Nm. The 1.8L NA unit churns out 98 kW (approx. 133 PS) and 182 Nm of torque. Additionally, the Refine M3 has also introduced HEV (self-charging hybrid) and PHEV (plug-in hybrid) variants. The PHEV variant combines a 2.0L petrol engine with an electric motor, with the engine producing 100 kW and the motor generating 130 kW, yielding a WLTC-rated pure electric range of 63 km. This powertrain setup boasts proven reliability and low breakdown rates, while its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR) layout with a longitudinally mounted engine ensures excellent load-lugging and hill-climbing prowess, maintaining steady power delivery even when laden with heavy cargo or fully occupied.
The chassis serves as the foundation of the Refine M3's heavy-duty engineering. It is underpinned by a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) layout, utilizing a proven suspension setup of a front double-wishbone torsion-bar independent suspension and a rear rigid axle with leaf springs. This robust chassis architecture enables a maximum gross vehicle weight rating of up to 2,378 kg, with many owners noting its capability to haul up to two tonnes of cargo with dependable durability. While the rear leaf springs deliver steadfast load support under heavy payloads, unladen ride comfort is noticeably firmer. In terms of handling, the electronic power steering (EPS) system ensures light, precise manoeuvrability at low speeds and on the move despite the vehicle's footprint. The commanding driving position also affords the driver a wide and commanding view of the road.
Thanks to its generous 2,810 mm wheelbase and clever interior packaging, the Refine M3 delivers outstanding cabin versatility. Seating configurations cover 5-, 7-, 8-, and 9-seater layouts, with the second- and third-row seats capable of folding flat or stowing sideways, expanding boot capacity up to upwards of 2,600 litres to easily transition between passenger ferrying and goods delivery. The Smart Connected variant is equipped with a 10.25-inch central touchscreen and telematics features, supporting Bluetooth telephony, online music streaming, real-time navigation, and smartphone app remote control for door locks and vehicle location, ensuring a smarter daily user experience.
In terms of passive safety, the Refine M3 is built around a high-tensile monocoque body shell featuring dedicated side impact structures and front crumple zones; paired with dual front airbags and three-point seatbelts throughout, it effectively disperses impact energy to preserve cabin integrity during a collision. For active safety, the entire range comes standard with an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), while higher variants add Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control System (TCS), and a Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS). Furthermore, reverse parking sensors and a reverse camera on selected models ease parking manoeuvres and improve safety. However, given its commercial positioning and cost parameters, its driver assist suite remains basic, primarily focusing on practical cruise control and essential hazard warning features.
The Refine M3 remains an enduring mainstay in China's commercial MPV market. Based on full-year 2025 sales data, the nameplate recorded an annual cumulative volume of 8,307 units. Its latest monthly sales stood at 426 units, ranking 25th in the overall MPV segment. The model's current official guide price ranges from RM73,900 to RM122,900. From an owner feedback perspective, its standout strengths centre on impressive multi-purpose space flexibility, durable mechanical underpinnings, and unbeatable value for money. Nevertheless, the trade-offs are also apparent: due to its load-bearing suspension setup, rear passenger comfort is unexceptional, while wind noise and tyre roar insulation at highway speeds fall behind passenger-oriented rivals. Even so, backed by low servicing costs and an extensive after-sales network, the Refine M3 continues to be a top workhorse choice for micro-businesses, self-employed entrepreneurs, and logistics operators.
