Model Overview

The JAC T9 is the flagship rugged pick-up truck from JAC Motors. Marketed domestically in China as the "JAC Hunter", it is sold across global markets under the unified name "JAC Frison T9". First introduced in China in 2021 as the Hunter, the model line has undergone continuous updates before accelerating its global push from 2023 onwards. As the spearhead of JAC Pick-up's globalisation strategy, the T9 is positioned as a flagship pick-up blending passenger-car comfort, premium appeal, and new energy powertrains, targeting key battlegrounds such as South Africa, Australia, Mexico, Pakistan, and Peru to go head-to-head against established rivals like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max. As of early 2026, the JAC T9 line-up encompasses internal combustion engine (2.0T diesel / 2.0T petrol), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), fully electric (EV), and CNG dual-fuel variants. JAC Pick-up achieved global sales of 61,000 units in 2025, retaining second place industry-wide and maintaining a solid second-place standing in international markets, with the T9 serving as a primary catalyst for overseas sales growth.

Key Overseas Markets and Positioning

JAC has rolled out tailored launch strategies for the T9 across different regions. In South Africa, the JAC T9 made its official debut in the second half of 2024 with 4x2 and 4x4 options, priced at approximately RM216,600 to RM260,000, sitting above the local T6 and T8 offerings. In Mexico, the T9 Frison arrived in May 2024 and was praised by local media as a "top-tier pick-up" and "one of the most accessible passenger-oriented pick-ups", driving JAC Frison pick-up sales to 701 units that month and overtaking both the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger. In Pakistan, the JAC T9 Frison was launched in October 2025 as a premium double-cab pick-up powered by a 2.0L turbo engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, with prices starting from 8,775,000 Rupees. In Singapore, the all-electric T9 EV was successfully delivered to a local airline in August 2025, marking a flagship milestone for JAC Motors' new energy commercial vehicles among high-profile fleet operators. In Russia, the petrol automatic T9 went on sale from 2025 onwards, starting at around 3,500,000 Rubles.

Design Language

The JAC T9 adopts a bold, American-inspired pick-up styling. Up front, a prominent trapezoidal chrome grille takes centre stage, flanked by sharp full-LED headlights to deliver an assertive yet modern visual presence. Down the sides, the squared-off profile is accentuated by muscular wheel arches and wide side steps that reinforce its off-road credentials. In terms of dimensions, the truck measures 5,330 mm in length, 1,965 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, with a 3,110 mm wheelbase, fitting squarely into the mid-size wide-body pick-up category. The cargo bed boasts a 1,000 kg payload capacity, alongside a 3,500 kg maximum braked towing capacity for demanding haulage tasks. Inside, the cabin takes a distinctly passenger-car approach, featuring a 10.4-inch floating central touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, wireless smartphone charging, power-adjustable heated front seats, leather upholstery, rear air-con vents, and a 220V power socket, delivering an ambience comparable to mid-to-high-end passenger SUVs.

Powertrain and Performance

The JAC T9 offers diverse powertrain options worldwide. The mainstream ICE option is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine delivering 125 kW and 410 Nm of torque, paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox and selectable drive modes including Sport, Normal, and Snow. In Mexico, the 2.0T petrol variant produces up to 164.8 kW (approx. 221 hp), likewise matched with an 8AT. The 4WD model features a BorgWarner two-speed transfer case with 2H, 4H, and 4L modes, a rear mechanical differential lock, and a ground clearance of 210 mm. The plug-in hybrid version (T9 PHEV) pairs a 2.0T engine with dual electric motors and a 31.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, churning out a combined 385 kW and 1,000 Nm, offering an all-electric range of over 100 km, an NEDC combined fuel consumption as low as 1.6 L/100 km, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) reverse charging capability. Meanwhile, the fully electric T9 EV has commenced commercial deliveries abroad, achieving an energy consumption of around 14.3 kWh per 100 km to further broaden JAC's reach in the commercial EV space.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the JAC T9 builds on the brand's solid reputation for robust chassis engineering. The ICE model rides on a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear leaf-spring non-independent setup, striking a balance between highway ride comfort and heavy-duty load carrying. The PHEV variant shares the same underlying chassis architecture but swaps the conventional gear lever for a sleek rotary shift dial, elevating the cabin's modern appeal. For the Australian market, the T9 PHEV's vehicle dynamics were tuned locally with the hands-on involvement of veteran chassis engineer Michael Barber, supported by the "No Shortcut" testing programme spanning over 50,000 km across diverse Australian road conditions to ensure composed and dependable handling in varied terrains and climates.

Safety and Driver Assistance Systems

Safety is a cornerstone of the JAC T9's global expansion. In April 2026, the T9 PHEV earned a maximum five-star safety rating in the latest, stringent ANCAP crash safety tests in Australia, setting a safety benchmark among plug-in hybrid pick-ups globally. The ICE model is similarly well-equipped with comprehensive active and passive safety features: six airbags come standard, while the active safety suite includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and a 360-degree surround-view camera, putting its safety credentials on par with mainstream passenger SUVs.

Market Performance and Reception

The JAC T9 serves as the spearhead of JAC Motors' global pick-up ambitions. In the first half of 2025, the T9 diesel alone registered 1,540 units in Russia, outselling domestic rivals like the UAZ Pickup. In Australia, the 2025 T9 has garnered positive reception for its competitive pricing, generous equipment list, and comprehensive seven-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty package (including seven years of roadside assistance and capped-price servicing). Back home, JAC Pick-up recorded total global sales of 32,900 units in 1H 2025, up 15% year-on-year, with domestic sales rising 10.98% and export markets expanding by 15.96%. Overseas motoring media and owners have largely praised its imposing design, class-above feature set, sturdy chassis, and potent 2.0T + 8AT combo, though some reviewers noted that throttle calibration could be slightly sharper and brand awareness in mature markets like Australia will take time to build. Overall, by running ICE, hybrid, and pure electric powertrains in tandem alongside a synchronised global rollout—backed by strong credentials such as a five-star ANCAP rating—the JAC T9 is fast emerging as one of the most promising contenders from China in the global premium pick-up segment.
