Brand Overview

INDI EV (INDIEV) is a U.S. electric vehicle startup established in 2017, headquartered in Los Angeles, California. The brand positions itself as "the future of smart mobility," focusing on the design and R&D of next-generation electric vehicles. Its logo features vertical lines, curves, and irregular rectangular frames, with vertical lines of varying positions on each side. The left side includes an adjacent bent curve, while the right side features a vertical rectangular frame with an inclined design at the top right corner, giving the overall aesthetic a minimalist industrial feel.

INDI’s core differentiator lies in embedding a high-performance PC configuration directly into the vehicle, supporting AAA game playback and video live streaming social features, earning it the nickname "a supercomputer on wheels." The first model, the Indi One, was unveiled to the public in Fall 2021 and was scheduled to complete its first round of deliveries in early 2023. However, due to a severe lack of funds, INDI EV filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with the California Bankruptcy Court in October 2023, listing assets of $2.83 million and liabilities of $26.4 million. As of May 2026, the brand remains under bankruptcy protection and has not achieved any official deliveries.

INDI EV was co-founded by Chinese businessman Shi Hai and several former Faraday Future executives. Shi Hai previously founded Suzhou Snail Digital Technology Co., Ltd. in 2000, accumulating extensive experience in 3D virtual worlds and game development. The unique concept of integrating high-performance gaming PCs into vehicles aligns closely with this background.

Development History

INDI EV's development history can be roughly divided into three distinct phases: Brand founding and prototype reveal (2017–2021), Foxconn contract manufacturing partnership and struggles before mass production (2022–2023), and Bankruptcy protection and brand silence (2023–present).

2017–2021: Dreams Take Flight

INDIEV was initially established in Vernon, a suburb of the Los Angeles area. Core members of the founding team had experience at Faraday Future, injecting a certain amount of smart EV technology DNA into the brand. In October 2021, the brand officially launched its first smart crossover EV, the Indi One, at the 2021 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Indi One centers on "smart digital experience" as its core selling point, emphasizing playability and social features distinct from traditional EVs. It boasts a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 5.7 seconds and a range of approximately 523 km. The entry-level price was set at $45,000, positioning it against competitors like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E.

2022–2023: Foxconn Partnership and Sharp Turn Towards Bankruptcy

In October 2022, Foxconn signed a memorandum of understanding with INDI EV, announcing that it would manufacture the first batch of Indi One prototypes at its Ohio plant (formerly the General Motors Lordstown plant). Foxconn stated that this cooperation marked "the beginning of a new future for electric vehicle manufacturing in Ohio." At the same time, INDI EV began integrating its supply chain: in May 2022, Yinjia Technology announced it had reached a designated cooperation agreement with INDI EV as the exclusive Tier 1 supplier, providing fully automatic parking and advanced driver assistance features for the Indi One.

However, beneath the surface shine, the financial situation quickly collapsed. It was disclosed that INDI EV then had only $220,000 in cash and planned to finance through a listing via merger with a partner. However, the listing plan failed due to the liquidation of the merger partner's assets. The breakdown of the funding chain made the prototype mass production plan impossible to advance, ultimately leading the company to apply for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with the California court in October 2023, with liabilities reaching $26.4 million.

2023–Present: Brand Silence

After the bankruptcy application, the brand website, driveindi.com, remains accessible, but there have been no new product updates or substantial operational dynamics. Foxconn stated that it has not yet responded to INDI EV's bankruptcy application, and the mass production and delivery schedule for the Indi One was indefinitely suspended. Consequently, INDI EV became known as a new EV manufacturer that "went bankrupt before delivery."

Brand Matrix / Product Line

INDI’s product line is highly streamlined; to date, it has only planned one model: the Indi One. The brand has not developed a second model or expanded into other categories such as commercial vehicles.

The Indi One is the brand's first and currently only officially announced product. Positioned as a pure electric smart crossover, the vehicle features body dimensions of 4801 mm × 1981 mm × 1702 mm, placing it between the Tesla Model Y and Model X in size. Its maximum cargo volume is 1,218 liters. In terms of powertrain, the Indi One utilizes a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system with a combined output power of approximately 302 kW. It achieves a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of approximately 5.5 to 5.7 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h. Equipped with a 95 kWh battery pack, the vehicle offers a range of approximately 523 km and supports 100 kW DC fast charging.

Regarding design, the vehicle adopts a closed front grille layout, complemented by a full-width daytime running light bar and matrix headlamps. The rear features floating full-width taillights that also serve as a spoiler. The cabin interior includes a floating digital instrument cluster and two 15-inch horizontal central control screens. Offering a five-seat layout, the vehicle is equipped with Alcantara material seats, a glass roof, and a built-in car fridge located in the center armrest box.

Market Performance

INDIEV's market performance can be summarized as: High start, poor financing, zero deliveries, and insolvency.

Financing and Financial Status

According to Crunchbase data, INDIEV's operating status is still marked as "Active." However, since its establishment, the company has mainly relied on founder Shi Hai's personal investment and equity sales to maintain operations. The brand has not secured large-scale participation from major venture capital firms or industrial capital. When applying for bankruptcy in 2023, INDI EV reported total assets of $2.83 million and total liabilities of $26.4 million, indicating a severe financial predicament of insolvency.

Production and Delivery

As of May 2026, INDI EV has not delivered a single mass-produced vehicle, and there are no sales records for the Indi One in the global market. The contract manufacturing plan with Foxconn’s Ohio plant, confirmed in 2022, remained at the prototype manufacturing stage and never entered mass production. Additionally, the designated cooperation with Yinjia Technology for APA and RPA automatic parking systems was never implemented in mass-produced vehicles due to the suspension of the project.

Core Technologies

INDI EV's most unique selling point is its Vehicle Integrated Computer technology—embedding a custom Windows PC directly under the front hood.

This "onboard supercomputer" is built on an Intel Core i7 processor and an Nvidia RTX 2080 graphics card, paired with a 15-inch central control screen. It is capable of running AAA games, AR/VR applications, and Metaverse systems, pushing the concept of the "car as a gaming console" to the forefront. Multiple cameras and sensors are arranged inside and outside the vehicle, allowing users to capture driving footage for short videos or live streaming, thereby deeply integrating the driving experience with social networks. Additionally, INDI EV once announced plans to integrate blockchain technology directly into every Indi One, with each vehicle acting as a blockchain node for transactions and bookkeeping. However, this plan failed to materialize as the project was aborted.

In terms of basic vehicle technology, the Indi One’s powertrain features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, a 95 kWh large-capacity battery pack, and a 100 kW fast charging solution. For assisted driving, it is equipped with a safety assistance function named Halo ADAS, which provides safety warnings to the driver via a display on the steering wheel. Automated parking capabilities are provided by Yinjia Technology, featuring APA (Autonomous Parking Assist) and RPA (Remote Parking Assist) systems. These support horizontal and vertical parking, various entry methods for front and rear parking, and offer potential for AVP (Automated Valet Parking) system expansion.

Overseas Layout

INDIEV’s headquarters and R&D center have always been located in California, USA. The memorandum of understanding signed with Foxconn in October 2022, which planned to use Foxconn’s Ohio plant for prototype production, represented its only overseas layout at the physical manufacturing level. Regarding the Chinese supply chain, the intelligent driving solutions and automatic parking systems were provided by the domestic company Yinjia Technology. Beyond this, INDI EV did not establish production facilities, R&D bases, or distribution networks in other markets, including China.

Future Outlook

As of May 2026, INDI EV remains in the judicial proceedings of bankruptcy protection. While Crunchbase lists its operating status as "Active," the official website has not published substantial product updates for a considerable period, and the brand’s official social media accounts are largely inactive.

The future of INDI EV depends on the court’s review of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection application and whether new investors are willing to step in. If an effective restructuring plan or new capital injection cannot be secured, the brand will likely move towards Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation.

INDI EV’s legacy lies in verifying the feasibility of the niche "gaming-electrified crossover EV" direction. The Indi One’s design philosophy, centered on high-end gaming experiences and social sharing, remains attractive to digital-native consumers today. However, the brand’s ultimate lesson is thought-provoking: for new automakers, unique product concepts and strong engineering capabilities are both indispensable. Without stable cash flow and reliable supply chain management, even world-class manufacturing OEM partnerships and imaginative product blueprints cannot sustain a brand’s lifeline. INDI EV’s downfall serves as a warning to participants in the globally competitive and often undercapitalized new EV manufacturer sector.
