The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is the first mass-production model under Hyundai Motor's dedicated all-electric sub-brand, IONIQ. Making its global debut in 2021, the EV is built on the proprietary Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) developed in-house by Hyundai Motor Group, marking the strategic start of Hyundai's electrification journey. With its forward-looking "Parametric Pixel" design language, 800V ultra-fast charging architecture, and spacious cabin, the IONIQ 5 quickly established a strong foothold in the global EV market. As of April 2026, cumulative global sales of the IONIQ series have crossed 550,000 units, with IONIQ 5 deliveries exceeding 400,000 units.

The IONIQ 5 is positioned as a pure electric mid-size crossover SUV and serves as a flagship strategic model for Hyundai's IONIQ sub-brand. Key selling points include its retro-futuristic styling, the generous cabin space and refined driving dynamics afforded by the E-GMP architecture, as well as 800V ultra-high-voltage fast charging. The vehicle adopts a 5-door, 5-seater layout with a 3,000 mm wheelbase. In the Chinese market, only the fully-imported 2026 IONIQ 5 N is currently available via official channels, carrying an official retail price of RM413,000. The base variant of the standard IONIQ 5 has yet to be officially introduced for sale in the domestic market. In North America, the 2026 IONIQ 5 starts from around USD 35,000; in South Korea, the IONIQ 5 N is priced from approximately KRW 80,290,000; whilst in India, the updated IONIQ 5 packs an 84 kWh battery, offering an ARAI-rated range of 690 km.
The exterior styling of the IONIQ 5 draws inspiration from Hyundai's first mass-produced model from the 1970s, the PONY, as well as the 45 EV concept car, seamlessly blending retro cues with futuristic flair. Up front, it features a clamshell bonnet flanked by signature "Parametric Pixel" LED daytime running lights (DRLs)—made up of miniature rectangular units to create an unmistakable lighting signature. The side profile boasts clean, crisp lines along with flush pop-out door handles that reduce aerodynamic drag while maintaining a clean aesthetic. At the rear, Parametric Pixel taillights mirror the front design. The 2024 mid-lifecycle facelift introduced refreshed front and rear bumpers, redesigned alloy wheels, and an updated rear spoiler. Meanwhile, the 2026 IONIQ 5 N retains its boxy, athletic silhouette, featuring a slim closed-off grille alongside an aggressive front bumper with large trapezoidal air dams and full-width red accent strips for an even meaner stance. Dimensionally, the IONIQ 5 N measures 4,715 mm long, 1,940 mm wide, and 1,585 mm tall.
Inside, the IONIQ 5 sports a minimalist, tech-laden cabin. The facelifted model comes equipped with dual 12.3-inch digital displays and an updated user interface. The "Universal Island" sliding centre console integrates a Qi wireless charging pad and physical switchgear for more intuitive operation. Cabin NVH levels have also been significantly improved courtesy of double-laminated acoustic glass on all four doors, optimised motor noise suppression, and expanded sound-insulation materials throughout.
The IONIQ 5 is offered with various powertrain configurations across rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) setups. Standard variants feature either a single rear-mounted motor or a dual-motor AWD layout, with upgraded battery packs—the Standard Range unit has been bumped from 58 kWh to 63 kWh, while the Long Range pack grows from 77.4 kWh to 84 kWh. The RWD Long Range variant claims an EPA-estimated range of up to 318 miles (around 512 km). Plugged into a 350 kW DC fast charger, it can recoup approximately 178 miles (286 km) of range in just 15 minutes.
The performance-oriented IONIQ 5 N is driven by an all-wheel drive system featuring dual front and rear electric motors, producing a combined output of 478 kW and 770 Nm of torque. With N Grin Boost engaged, peak power surges to 650 PS for a 10-second burst, allowing it to complete the 0–100 km/h sprint in a blistering 3.4 seconds. Energy is supplied by an 83.3 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, delivering a CLTC-rated range of 556 km. The entire line-up comes standard with an 800V ultra-fast charging architecture, enabling a 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in roughly 18 to 20 minutes. The E-GMP platform also features a world-first patented multi-charging system compatible with both 400V and 800V infrastructures.
Underpinning the IONIQ 5 is Hyundai Motor Group's dedicated E-GMP EV platform. The flat floor-mounted battery pack optimises front-to-rear weight distribution while lowering the overall centre of gravity. Suspension duties are handled by front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent setup. The IONIQ 5 N receives substantial chassis reinforcement over the standard car—gaining 42 additional structural weld points and 2.1 metres of structural adhesives, along with beefed-up rear boot, motor, and battery mounts, plus revised front and rear subframes for increased torsional rigidity. The N model also features uprated thermal management hardware, including a dedicated radiator. For the 2026 model year, the IONIQ 5 N adds the N Drift Optimizer Pro system, which minimises Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) intrusion and delivers linear torque delivery for a sharper drifting experience. Drivers can also toggle between several drive modes, including Eco, Normal, Sport, My Drive, and Snow.
The IONIQ 5 N is fitted with a 12.3-inch N-exclusive infotainment touchscreen, a 12.3-inch N-themed digital instrument cluster, and an N-themed Head-Up Display (HUD). The infotainment unit features built-in N Track Map functionality with integrated circuit layouts and lap timers for prominent racetracks including Shanghai Tianma, Beijing Goldenport, and Ningbo International Circuit. The 2026 IONIQ 5 N further introduces haptic steering wheel feedback and anti-pinch power windows for the rear seats. The cabin adopts a predominantly black colour scheme complemented by suede upholstery. Amenities include dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless smartphone charger, and heated front seats. Boot space is versatile and can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats.
The IONIQ 5 has garnered widespread recognition for safety from global testing bodies, bagging top safety awards and five-star crash test ratings across North America and Europe. In terms of passive safety, it features a comprehensive multi-airbag system and a high-tensile body shell. On the active safety front, it packs the full suite of Hyundai SmartSense Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), comprising Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA), and Driver Attention Warning (DAW), providing Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability.
