Honda ZR-V

2026-10-11 20:40:00

Model Overview

The Honda ZR-V is a global strategic C-segment SUV from Honda, positioned neatly between the HR-V (Vezel) and CR-V (Breeze). Debuting in 2022, it represents a key offering developed under the all-new Honda Architecture platform. In China, GAC Honda officially introduced the model in May 2022 under the Chinese moniker "Zhizai"—where "Zhi" represents aspiration and arrival, and "Zai" symbolises carefree freedom and effortless driving. The "Z" in its name signifies "liberating the individuality of both driver and machine", with "releasing distinct brilliance" as its core design philosophy. Dimension-wise, the China-spec ZR-V Zhizai measures 4,568 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,611 mm in height, with a 2,655 mm wheelbase. The petrol variant was launched locally in August 2022 with a price tag ranging from RM159,900 to RM195,900, followed by the hybrid variant in February 2023, priced between RM179,900 and RM228,900. In Japan, the 2026 ZR-V starts at 3.707 million JPY, which translates to approximately RM162,900.

Design Language

In terms of styling, the ZR-V largely mirrors the exterior design of the North American-market HR-V. Up front, it features a distinctive hexagonal grille flanked by full-LED headlamps with sequential turn signals, complemented by dark-tinted alloy wheels and rugged black body cladding for a more muscular stance. At the rear, a roof-mounted tailgate spoiler accentuates its sporty character, while the L-shaped LED tail light signatures seamlessly mirror the front LED daytime running lights. Inside, the ZR-V Zhizai adopts Honda's "Simplicity and Something" design ethos, sharing its dashboard layout with the Honda Integra while stepping up on material quality—soft-touch leather trims cover key contact points including the seats, steering wheel, centre console, and door cards. The saddle-style centre console is a standout design highlight, appointed with perforated leather, contrast stitching, and embroidered fabric accents. The 2026 Japan-spec facelift introduces new exterior finishes such as Twilight Black Pearl, Meteoroid Gray Metallic, and Deep Ocean Blue Pearl, alongside the darkened Z Black Style and the rugged Z Cross Touring editions.

Powertrain and Performance

Globally, the ZR-V is offered with petrol and hybrid powertrain options. The China-spec petrol variant is powered by a 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo direct-injection engine (engine code L15C) producing 134 kW (182 PS) and 240 Nm of torque, mated to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Rated fuel consumption under the WLTC test cycle stands at 6.96 to 7.08 L/100 km.

The e:HEV hybrid variant is equipped with Honda's fourth-generation i-MMD dual-motor hybrid system, comprising a 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle naturally aspirated petrol engine (105 kW/143 PS, 182 Nm) paired with an electric drive motor (135 kW/184 PS, 315 Nm) to deliver a combined system output of 149 kW (approx. 203 PS). Power is managed via an Electronic Continuously Variable Transmission (e-CVT). For the 2026 Japan-spec facelift, the 1.5T petrol unit has been dropped entirely in favour of a standard 2.0L e:HEV hybrid powertrain across the range, delivering a total output of 184 PS.

Chassis and Handling

The ZR-V is built on the advanced Honda Architecture global platform. The suspension setup features front MacPherson struts paired with an independent multi-link arrangement at the rear. Braking is handled by ventilated front and solid rear discs, assisted by an Electric Brake Booster (EBB) and an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Brake Hold. Steering precision is aided by a Dual-Pinion variable-ratio Electric Power Steering (DPA-EPS) system. The minimum turning radius measures between 5.2 and 5.5 metres. In terms of drivetrain, the China-spec model is strictly front-wheel drive (FWD), whereas the 2026 Japan-spec model offers both FWD and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. Structural rigidity is further enhanced through a lightweight aluminium subframe and advanced roof laser-brazing construction.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside the cabin, the China-spec ZR-V Zhizai features a 10.1-inch central touchscreen infotainment unit; the 2026 Japan-spec Z grade and above come equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen featuring built-in Google services alongside a 10.2-inch full digital instrument cluster. High-spec variants are treated to a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system. The seats on range-topping models are upholstered in genuine leather with power adjustment and heating functions. The hybrid model comes standard with a Shift-by-Wire (SBW) push-button gear selector and 10-colour ambient lighting. For comfort and convenience, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 360-degree multi-view camera system are fitted as standard across the range.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the ZR-V comes standard with the full Honda SENSING active safety suite. This includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS), Road Departure Mitigation (RDM), Forward Collision Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), delivering Level 2 semi-autonomous driving capability. In terms of passive safety, the ZR-V Zhizai utilizes 8.5% hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel in its body structure and comes fitted with 10 SRS airbags (including dual front, front side, full-length side curtain, and dual front knee airbags).

Market Performance and Reception

Market performance for the ZR-V has diverged significantly across global markets. It maintained steady momentum in overseas markets—registering 3,940 units sold in Australia throughout 2025. In China, however, sales of the ZR-V Zhizai were exceptionally sluggish, with full-year 2025 deliveries reaching just 112 units. Market analysts suggest that GAC Honda has largely dialed back marketing efforts for the model. In terms of user feedback, owners widely praise its sharp styling, engaging driving dynamics, and the punchy responsiveness of the 1.5T engine; common gripes, however, point to slightly detached steering feedback, a firm ride over broken pavement, and sound insulation remaining Honda's traditional shortcoming. Within its segment, the ZR-V primarily locks horns with rivals such as the Toyota Corolla Cross and Frontlander. While the ZR-V exhibits solid product fundamentals, it has struggled to gain traction amid the intense competition of China's compact SUV segment, falling well short of initial sales targets.
