Development History

The Engineering Pact (1898–1903)

The enterprise was forged from a strategic partnership between Gustave Gobron, a prominent French politician, industrialist, and member of the National Assembly, and Eugène Brillié, a brilliant, non-conformist mechanical engineer. Gobron provided the necessary commercial capital and access to Paris's high-society elite, while Brillié locked himself away to pioneer an engine design that completely discarded conventional layouts.

By 1903, internal friction regarding the corporate direction led to a split. Brillié departed the company to join the heavy manufacturing conglomerate Schneider & Cie, where he went on to design France’s very first military tank (the Schneider CA1) during World War I. Gobron retained control of the car factory, though the company continued using Brillié's patented engine layout for nearly two decades.

Breaking the 100 mph Barrier (1904)

To demonstrate the absolute supremacy of their mechanical design, Gobron-Brillié entered the highly competitive arena of the Land Speed Record, which at the turn of the 20th century was largely dominated by steam and electric propulsion.

On 21 July 1904, during the Ostend Speedway Week in Belgium, French racing driver Louis Rigolly piloted a specially constructed 13.5-litre Gobron-Brillié racing machine down the sand. Rigolly clocked a historic speed of 103.56 mph (166.66 km/h), entering the record books as the first human being to drive a motor car past 100 miles per hour. The feat stunned the automotive world and permanently validated internal combustion as the future of transport.

Post-War Decline and Demise (1919–1930)

During the First World War, the Boulogne-Billancourt factory was converted to manufacture artillery shells for the French military. Following the armistice, the brand attempted to return to passenger car manufacturing, dropping "Brillié" from its name to trade simply as Gobron.

However, the post-war automotive landscape had profoundly shifted. The intricate, hand-fitted opposed-piston engines were prohibitively expensive to manufacture and could not compete with the low-cost mass production lines of Ford and Citroën. In a desperate bid to survive, the company launched a new line of vehicles in the 1920s using conventional, bought-in 1.5-litre engines. Stripped of its unique engineering soul and mechanical prestige, the company entered liquidation and closed its doors permanently in 1930.

The Opposed-Piston Engine

While contemporary manufacturers utilized one piston per cylinder, Eugène Brillié engineered a system featuring two pistons per cylinder moving in opposite directions, with a central combustion chamber shared between them.
