Gearbox Suppliers

2026-10-21 16:40:00

Gearbox suppliers refer to component manufacturers that supply complete transmission assemblies and core driveline parts to vehicle manufacturers (OEMs). As a critical pillar of an automotive powertrain, the gearbox directly determines gearshift smoothness, fuel efficiency, and overall driving dynamics. In the internal combustion engine (ICE) era, the gearbox formed the core "three major mechanical components" alongside the engine and chassis, granting suppliers a pivotal standing across the automotive supply chain. With the accelerating pace of vehicle electrification, suppliers are actively pivoting from traditional mechanical gearboxes towards dedicated hybrid transmissions (DHT), EV reduction gearboxes, and integrated electric drive units (e-axles).

Global Giants and Joint Venture Partnerships

The global transmission supply landscape has long been led by international Tier-1 giants, who actively contest the Chinese market via strategic joint ventures. ZF is among the world's top ten automotive component suppliers, with a broad product portfolio spanning driveline, chassis, and mobility systems. In 2025, the ZF-Foton joint venture facility in Jiaxing commenced operations with a total investment of 5 billion yuan. Dedicated primarily to producing premium automatic transmissions, this flagship "Sino-German Industry 4.0 Demonstration Project" was established to meet the rising demand for intelligent and highly efficient gearboxes.

Honda operates a wholly-owned transmission manufacturing hub in China—Honda Auto Parts Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (CHAM) in Foshan, Guangdong—representing its fourth overseas plant equipped for full-process automatic gearbox production. As Honda's largest gearbox production base globally, CHAM houses five production lines (three dedicated to continuously variable transmissions [CVT], and two for third- and fourth-generation hybrid systems), boasting an annual capacity of 1.88 million units, including 600,000 hybrid gearboxes. Its output supplies virtually the entire local line-up of GAC Honda and Dongfeng Honda in China.

Punch Powertrain, founded in Belgium in 1972, is a leading independent automotive powertrain specialist globally. Since establishing its presence in the Nanjing Economic and Technological Development Zone in 2007, Punch Powertrain has built on over 50 years of expertise in CVT design and manufacturing, whilst diversifying into dual-clutch transmissions (DCT), dedicated hybrid transmissions (DHT), and electrified powertrains. In October 2025, Punch Powertrain officially hit the milestone of producing its 4 millionth gearbox, becoming the first independent global powertrain supplier in China to achieve this production volume.

Leading Chinese Domestic Champions

Chinese domestic transmission suppliers have established formidable competitiveness across both the commercial vehicle and passenger car segments.

Fast Group, established in 1968, stands as the world's largest commercial vehicle transmission manufacturing base. The enterprise has led China's gear industry across key operational metrics for 23 consecutive years, with annual production and sales of heavy-duty vehicle transmissions ranking number one globally for 20 straight years. Holding over 3,636 patents, Fast Group's portfolio covers heavy-duty commercial gearboxes, medium- and light-duty truck transmissions, bus transmissions, AT/AMT systems, new energy transmissions, and electric drive axles. Designated as an OEM supplier for thousands of models across more than 150 domestic and overseas vehicle manufacturers, Fast Group has surpassed 15 million units in cumulative transmission sales, maintaining the top domestic market share.

Zhejiang Wanliyang is a major Chinese automotive transmission manufacturer structured into three key divisions: commercial vehicle transmissions, passenger car transmissions, and new energy powertrains. Its product range spans CVTs, manual transmissions (MT), DHT hybrid systems, pure electric ECVTs, and EV speed reducers. As of the end of 2024, the company's annual transmission capacity reached 2.75 million units, supplying key OEMs including Foton, Dongfeng Motor, Sinotruk, FAW Group, Geely, Chery, Great Wall Motor, and BYD.

Shanghai Automobile Gear Works (SAGW), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SAIC Motor established in 1925, is one of China's most influential R&D and manufacturing powerhouses for automotive transmissions. With six major manufacturing bases situated across Shanghai, Shenyang, Shandong, Liuzhou, Jiangsu, and Chongqing, SAGW boasts 21 modular platforms and over 100 product variations. Achieving annual transmission assembly sales exceeding 3.87 million units, it supplies renowned domestic and international carmakers such as SAIC-GM, SAIC Volkswagen, Dongfeng Nissan, GM, and Ford.

HYCET Powertrain, a core component subsidiary under Great Wall Motor (GWM), is a top-tier Chinese supplier of automatic gearboxes and hybrid/electric drive assemblies. Its 9DCT is China's first mass-produced 9-speed wet dual-clutch transmission, while its 7DCT serves as the staple unit paired with GWM's mainstream HAVAL and WEY model line-ups.

Industry Chain Standing and Electrification Shift

Transmission suppliers occupy a vital midstream position within the automotive supply chain, bridging upstream raw material providers (such as steel and aluminium alloys) and precision component specialists with downstream vehicle assemblers. Unlike engine manufacturing, where carmakers frequently built in-house capacity, the gearbox sector was long dominated by independent global Tier-1s and joint ventures—such as Punch Powertrain supplying CVTs to various local Chinese marques, and Honda CHAM acting as an exclusive powertrain facility for Honda's joint ventures in China.

The industry is currently navigating a profound transition towards electrification. Traditional gearbox manufacturers are no longer confined to conventional mechanical gearboxes, but are comprehensively pivoting towards multi-energy compatibility—delivering dedicated DHT units for hybrids, alongside single-speed reduction gearboxes and 3-in-1 integrated electric drive units for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). Domestic champions including Wanliyang and HYCET have aggressively introduced DHT hybrid systems, while Punch Powertrain's line-up extensively spans both DHT and pure EV drivetrains. This structural shift is reshaping the competitive landscape, presenting a fundamental challenge to the historical edge held by conventional mechanical transmissions in the electric era.
