Dongfeng Aeolus L7X

2026-10-04 12:30:00

Model Overview

The Dongfeng Aeolus L7X is an all-electric compact SUV launched by the Dongfeng Aeolus brand under Dongfeng Passenger Vehicle. Officially launched in August 2025, the model represents a key strategic rollout for Dongfeng Aeolus in the pure electric vehicle market. The new SUV is offered in three trim levels: Fengshang Edition, Luxury Edition, and Yunyi Edition, with official recommended retail prices ranging from RM186,900 to RM234,500. Specifically, the 440km Fengshang Edition is priced at RM186,900, the 530km Luxury Edition at RM217,600, and the 530km Yunyi Edition at RM234,500. Positioning its bold "mecha-style" design as its primary unique selling proposition, its key rivals include similarly priced joint-venture electric SUVs such as the FAW-Volkswagen ID.4 CROZZ, Volkswagen ID.UNYX 06, and Kia EV5.

Design Language

The Aeolus L7X adopts a visual design language dubbed  "Mecha Storm", delivering a sharply sculpted and aggressive road presence. The front fascia features the closed-off grille characteristic of modern EVs, complemented by pronounced muscular creases along the bonnet. Sleek LED headlamp assemblies are integrated with segmented daytime running lights (DRLs), while the lower front bumper incorporates trapezoidal air intakes flanked by vertical black trim inserts, evoking a striking "wide-mouth" aesthetic.

The side profile showcases a dynamic interplay of crisp lines and sweeping surfaces, where a sharp shoulder line running from the front wing to the taillights complements a rising character line across the lower doors. It comes fitted with flush pop-out door handles and a floating roof design, paired with sporty alloy wheels to accentuate its athletic stance. At the rear, the shoulder line flows seamlessly into the taillight cluster. In terms of exterior dimensions, it measures 4,670mm long, 1,900mm wide, and 1,613mm tall, with a 2,775mm wheelbase. Its generous 1,900mm width stands out in the compact SUV segment, lending the vehicle a low-slung, planted stance with substantial visual impact.

Inside, the Aeolus L7X adopts a clean, minimalist interior layout. The dashboard is dominated by horizontal lines with distinct layering. The driver is greeted by a two-spoke flat-bottom multifunction steering wheel and a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster. Infotainment display sizes vary across the range—measuring 9.0 inches on the Fengshang and Luxury Editions, and upgraded to 10.4 inches on the range-topping Yunyi Edition. Symmetrical air-conditioning vents are detailed with subtle silver garnish surrounds. At present, only an all-black interior colour theme has been officially introduced.

Powertrain and Performance

The Aeolus L7X lineup is powered exclusively by a front-mounted single electric motor in a front-wheel-drive (FWD) configuration. Driven by a permanent magnet synchronous motor, it delivers a maximum power output of 120kW (approx. 163 PS) and a peak torque of 240N·m. The official 0-100km/h sprint is completed in 9.2 seconds, with a top speed of 160km/h.

In terms of energy storage, two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery capacities are offered: 50.59kWh and 61.24kWh. These provide CLTC-rated pure electric driving ranges of 440km (Fengshang Edition) and 530km (Luxury and Yunyi Editions) respectively. For DC fast charging, replenishing from 30% to 80% takes approximately 0.47 hours (around 28 minutes), whereas AC slow charging requires 7.9 hours. Power consumption per 100km has not been published. Kerb weight is rated at approximately 1,712kg.

Chassis and Handling

Under the skin, the Aeolus L7X rides on a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension layout. Steering is handled by an electric power steering (EPS) system. Braking duties are managed by ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear, paired with an Electronic Parking Brake (EPB). The vehicle is front-wheel driven, with a minimum ground clearance of 145mm. The flagship Yunyi Edition further adds Auto Brake Hold and Hill Descent Control (HDC). The overall chassis tuning is noticeably oriented towards daily urban ride comfort.

Cabin and Equipment

In terms of convenience and equipment, the Aeolus L7X comes standard across all variants with electrically adjustable side mirrors, a reverse camera, leatherette sports seats, a voice command system, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, and smartphone remote vehicle control.

Looking at the variant hierarchy, the Luxury Edition (RM217,600) adds built-in GPS navigation over the Fengshang Edition, doubles the speaker count from 2 to 4, and upgrades to aluminium alloy wheels. The range-topping Yunyi Edition (RM234,500) further incorporates cruise control, Auto Brake Hold, Hill Descent Control, 4G connected telematics, over-the-air (OTA) updates, a built-in ETC toll unit, and an in-cabin fragrance system, while expanding the audio setup to 6 speakers. The top-spec model also offers the WindLink OS infotainment system as an optional upgrade.

The cabin adopts a practical 5-door, 5-seater SUV layout, offering a standard boot volume of 413L. Thanks to the generous 2,775mm wheelbase, passenger room in both the front and rear quarters is notably spacious.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the Aeolus L7X is equipped with only dual front airbags (driver and front passenger) across the entire range, which comes across as rudimentary for a vehicle in this price bracket. A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is standard across all variants.

In terms of advanced driver assistance, the Aeolus L7X is conspicuously under-equipped. Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance is entirely absent across the range, with even the top-spec Yunyi Edition featuring only basic passive cruise control. Mainstream active safety systems such as Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Blind Spot Monitoring / Lane Change Assist, and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) are not available. With rival EVs in the same price tier widely offering Level 2 ADAS suites as standard, this remains a significant competitive disadvantage.

Market Performance and Evaluation

With an entry price of RM186,900, the Aeolus L7X goes head-to-head against established joint-venture electric SUVs in the mainstream segment. Industry commentators note that while its striking mecha-inspired exterior is its strongest selling point, the specification balance is notably compromised—the entry model settles for a basic 9.0-inch touchscreen and just 2 speakers, while the entire lineup makes do with only two airbags and completely lacks Level 2 ADAS, falling short of market expectations in the RM180,000 bracket. In terms of performance, the 120kW motor and 440km/530km range figures sit squarely within segment averages without offering standout highlights.

The modern EV landscape has progressed beyond simple on-paper specification comparisons. While the Aeolus L7X relies on its distinctive design language to carve out a niche, its clear deficits in active safety and driver assistance tech put it at a notable disadvantage against rivals like the Volkswagen ID.4 CROZZ and Kia EV5. As of June 2026, no official sales figures have been published for the model. As Dongfeng Aeolus' fresh foray into the pure electric compact SUV segment, the L7X attempts to engage younger buyers with its bold styling, but whether this proposition can gain meaningful traction in the intensely competitive RM180,000 to RM240,000 price band remains to be proven by the market.
