Circuit of the Americas (COTA)

Definition and Historical Status
Circuit of the Americas, officially abbreviated as COTA, is a purpose-built Grade 1 permanent motor racing circuit located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, United States. Penned by renowned track designer Hermann Tilke, the circuit officially opened in 2012 and took over hosting duties for the F1 United States Grand Prix that same year, replacing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The completion of COTA marked Formula 1's return to the US after a five-year hiatus; with a 10-year contract signed with the local government, the venue has hosted the race continuously, establishing itself as a vital cornerstone for motorsport in North America.

Track Layout and Core Characteristics
The circuit has a lap distance of 5.513 km featuring 20 turns (11 left-handers, 9 right-handers) and runs in an anti-clockwise direction, a rarity on the F1 calendar. Built into the natural topography, it boasts a maximum elevation change of 41 metres, creating a rolling, undulating profile that severely tests mechanical grip and vehicle suspension setups. The Grand Prix covers 56 laps, running a total race distance of 308.405 km. While the asphalt was initially smooth and sensitive to ambient temperature swings, years of use have made it rougher and bumpier; select sections have undergone specialised surface grinding with etched "micro-grooves" to enhance traction, though this has also accelerated tyre wear.

Design Philosophy: Blending Motorsport Classics
COTA's core design ethos centres on recreating the finest corner sequences from iconic circuits across the globe. The Turn 3 to 6 complex mirrors the high-speed "Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel" sequence at the UK's Silverstone Circuit; Turns 12 to 15 take inspiration from the "Stadium Section" at Germany's Hockenheimring; Turns 16 to 18 pay homage to the legendary multi-apex Turn 8 at Turkey's Istanbul Park; and the Turn 2 to 3 complex is drawn from the "Senna 'S'" at Brazil's Interlagos. Turn 1, perched at the circuit's crest and spanning an expansive 28 metres in width, provides drivers with multiple racing lines and serves as the primary overtaking zone on the track.

Iconic Sectors and Driving Challenges
Off the starting grid, cars charge straight up the steep incline to the crest of Turn 1 before plunging downhill into a relentless sequence of high-speed sweeping esses; Turn 10 presents a blind corner, followed immediately by the tight Turn 11 hairpin. The circuit also features a back straight exceeding 1,200 metres, where top speeds surpass 350 km/h. Meanwhile, the rapid changes of direction through Turns 16 to 18 exert massive lateral load on the right-rear tyre sidewall, making tyre management paramount throughout the race weekend.

Lap Records and Historical Data
The official F1 race lap record stands at 1:36.169, set by Charles Leclerc in 2019. Fernando Alonso set a benchmark of 1:37.840 in 2023, which was subsequently eclipsed in 2025 by Lando Norris with a blistering 1:32.330. The grandstands accommodate roughly 100,000 spectators, anchored by the iconic 251-foot (77-metre) observation tower as the venue's centrepiece.

2026 Season Race Schedule
The 2026 F1 United States Grand Prix is scheduled to take place at COTA from 23 to 25 October, preceded by the newly added "Grand PrixView Thursday" on 22 October featuring F1 Academy sessions, pit lane walks, and fan experiences. The race weekend's entertainment line-up includes headline concerts from Maroon 5, Post Malone, and Alesso. Beyond Formula 1, COTA also plays host to premier championships including MotoGP, the FIA World Endurance Championship, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and NASCAR, standing as one of the most versatile motorsport facilities in North America. During the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, Chinese driver Ye Yifei drove to an outright overall victory at COTA.
