IMSA GmbH is a renowned modification and upgrade brand from the town of Brueggen on the lower Rhine in Germany. In 2001, founder Holger Mohr—who was an apprentice within the Mercedes-Benz system before joining the Danish modification company Kleemann—founded this modification plant. In 2016, the brand was officially registered as a car manufacturer by the German Federal Ministry of Transport.
The logo consists of a set of bold lowercase letters "imsa," giving an overall broad, powerful, and confident impression. The brand's package once set world records for the fastest SUV (282 km/h) and the fastest four-door sedan (338 km/h).
Before 2014, IMSA was famous for modifying supercars from Lamborghini, launching stunning works based on the Murcielago and Gallardo, including the wide-body Gallardo GTV. In 2014, the team shifted its modification focus significantly toward Mercedes-Benz, thus beginning a brilliant new chapter.
In November 2018, the IMSA-Mercedes-Benz authorized modification brand officially announced its entry into the Chinese market. That same year, IMSA (Chongqing) Trading Co., Ltd. was established at the Chongqing Bonded Port, becoming the sole general agent for the IMSA brand in Greater China. In 2019, the first IMSA GLE 320 luxury version entered the Chinese market, priced at 668,000 RMB, and quickly opened up the market with a strategy of "standard Chinese procedures at parallel import prices."
IMSA focuses highly on Mercedes-Benz and its high-end models (S-Class, Maybach S-Class, GLE, GLS, G-Class, etc.), and does not modify low-end models.
IMSA almost provides uniform visual modification solutions on various luxury models, including: replacing all external stars with IMSA "I" logo, installing IMSA original aerodynamic kits (front/rear bumpers, side skirts, spoilers), and simultaneously upgrading to larger IMSA special forged wheels (e.g., 21-inch disc wheels), while high-efficiency safe carbon ceramic brake systems are also upgraded together.
In the Chinese market, IMSA S450L is the representative product introduced in large quantities, modifications include IMSA carbon fiber wide-body sports kit, IMSA custom 21-inch wheels, and multiple carbon fiber decorations, creating an excellent appearance that is dynamic and combines administrative luxury.
The selling point of IMSA in the Chinese market is "both big brand warranty and parallel import cost-effectiveness." Modified IMSA vehicles have a completely official status: they are China official 3C certified models, come with standard Chinese VIN codes, and can enjoy factory warranty service at Mercedes-Benz 4S stores nationwide. Meanwhile, due to differentiated customization of certain exterior parts, the added components are provided with independent warranty service by IMSA.
In 2020, Xiamen Port Service Trade and Chongqing IMSA Trading Co., Ltd. signed a large order worth 450 million RMB, and the first batch of 300 IMSA brand complete vehicles were shipped to China for sale. Compared to Brabus's AMG finished cars, which are priced at millions, IMSA's differentiated approach is to "respond quickly to Chinese users, providing a more cost-effective and unique modification upgrade brand choice."
IMSA operates at the level of a Mercedes-Benz official authorized partner. Its core technical contributions focus primarily on the redesign, upgrade, and development of exterior body panels and chassis running gear. Most modification kits pass TÜV certification, ensuring that the finished vehicle still meets the stringent safety standards of Germany and the EU.
Unlike mainstream modification brands that aggressively pursue horsepower figures, IMSA always retains the Mercedes-Benz factory original powertrain settings, with no major changes to the engine, transmission, or suspension geometry. While the interior retains Mercedes-Benz's original design, it comes standard with 12.3-inch dual high-definition screens, an upgraded multifunction steering wheel, advanced air conditioning functions, and other features, comprehensively surpassing the original base model in terms of equipment.
IMSA considers China its core growth market. In 2018, the brand announced its entry into China with a high profile, leveraging the CIIE opportunity, and began carrying out complete vehicle import operations through trade hubs such as Chongqing IMSA Trading Co., Ltd. and Xiamen Port. After making a strong impression in China, IMSA has continued to steadily serve high-end European supercar clientele, while also delivering hundreds of custom complete vehicles to China since 2020, deepening its overseas presence in this exclusive segment.
As of early 2026, IMSA's pace in the Chinese market has tended to stabilize. The brand did not launch an independent AMG racing finished car line like Brabus, but instead steadily follows Mercedes-Benz's new product iteration rhythm, continuously launching small batches of new vehicles that meet Chinese emission standards.
Unlike Brabus's focus on mass-production power and high customization premiums, IMSA's long-term strategy is highly differentiated: it offers users a Mercedes-Benz official modification solution that combines high aesthetics and high uniqueness with relatively controllable cost. As customization demand grows, IMSA is gradually becoming an indispensable personalized choice among Mercedes-Benz's millions of potential users.
