The Chery Tiggo 8L is a D-segment mid-size SUV under Chery Automobile, officially making its global debut in Chengdu on 8 August 2024. Positioned as the largest and most premium flagship model within the Tiggo 8 lineup, the Tiggo 8L is underpinned by Chery's T2X modular platform, available in 5 variants priced between RM129,900 and RM174,900. On 28 June 2025, Chery expanded the range with the Tiggo 8L Changhong Edition, carrying an official retail price of RM147,700 and a limited-time promotional price of RM127,700. Design Language
The Tiggo 8L embodies Chery's "Art in Motion" design philosophy. The front profile features a three-tier progressive layout: a hexagonal smoked radiator grille studded with 128 chrome-finished matrix pins on the outer layer; an integrated active shutter grille (ASG) in the middle layer; complemented by full-LED matrix headlamps and three-segment daytime running lights, alongside T-shaped chrome bumper trims styled after tiger whiskers that deliver an illuminated recognition distance of up to 300 metres at night. Down the sides, a high shoulder line stretches from the front light clusters to the tail lamps, adhering to the 0.618 golden ratio; sculpted lower character lines are paired with flush-fitting pop-out door handles that reduce aerodynamic drag by 0.03 Cd; while a floating roofline is matched with 19- or 20-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. At the rear, a 1.2-metre full-width LED light bar incorporates 264 individual diodes with dynamic sequential turn indicators.
In terms of dimensions, the Tiggo 8L measures 4,795 mm long, 1,930 mm wide, and 1,729 mm tall (1,741 mm / 1,737 mm depending on variant), riding on a 2,770 mm wheelbase. Five exterior colour options are available: Tech Grey, Chery White, Pine Ink Black, Matte Grey, and Frosted Grey. Inside, the cabin adopts a wrap-around T-shaped dashboard layout, embellished with open-pore woodgrain trim and vertical-stitched embossed seats, exuding a minimalist yet refined, upscale atmosphere.
Powertrain & Performance
The Tiggo 8L is powered across the range by Chery's in-house developed 2.0TGDI Kunpeng turbocharged petrol engine, an award-winning unit named among the "China Heart" Top Ten Engines. It churns out a maximum power of 187 kW (approx. 254 PS) and a peak torque of 390 Nm, with peak torque delivered across a broad band from 1,750 to 4,000 rpm. Power is channelled through Chery's proprietary Fuzhen 8-speed torque-converter automatic transmission (Kunpeng 8AT), which boasts a peak mechanical efficiency of 96%.
The engine runs on standard RON 92 petrol. Rated fuel consumption on the WLTC cycle stands at 7.8 L/100 km for 2WD variants and 8.5 L/100 km for AWD variants. Top speed is rated at 200 km/h, fed by a 65-litre fuel tank. The vehicle comes backed by a 3-year/100,000 km manufacturer warranty, with the first private non-commercial owner entitled to a lifetime comprehensive vehicle warranty.
Chassis & Handling
Underneath, the Tiggo 8L rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The front axle incorporates a hollow anti-roll bar design, cutting component weight by 15%. The chassis was honed and calibrated by UK-based engineering consultancy HORIBA MIRA. Drivetrain options include front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter featuring an intelligent on-demand all-wheel-drive system. The all-terrain smart AWD system provides 7 drive modes covering over 19 road and terrain conditions, capable of sending up to 50% of drive torque to the rear wheels. Stopping power is governed by a Bosch Integrated Power Brake (IPB) brake-by-wire system, with ventilated discs up front and solid discs at the rear. The Tiggo 8L posted a 78.5 km/h moose test speed and offers a maximum water-wading depth of 500 mm.
Cabin & Features
In the tech department, the Tiggo 8L features a 10.25-inch full digital instrument cluster alongside a 15.6-inch ultra-slim bezel 2.5K floating central infotainment touchscreen. The infotainment system is powered by an automotive-grade Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor, running Chery's Lion OS, equipped with AI large-model-assisted voice commands supporting continuous wake-up-free recognition and dialect detection. Connectivity covers Apple CarPlay, Huawei HiCar, and Baidu CarLife. Higher-spec models add a W-HUD head-up display, a 14-speaker Sony premium audio system, a 50W wireless smartphone charging pad, and beat-synced ambient lighting.
Seating arrangements include a 5-seater configuration and a 7-seater layout (2+3+2), boasting an impressive 70.04% cabin spatial efficiency. Premium trims feature heated, ventilated, and 10-point massaging front seats, 10-way power adjustment for the driver, and a one-touch zero-gravity "Queen" lounge front passenger seat. Rear occupants get dedicated B-pillar air vents, independent second-row air-con controls, power-reclining backrests, and a one-touch EZE smart-entry function. Both second- and third-row seats fold down flat at the touch of a button, expanding maximum boot space to an cavernous 2,065 litres. A total of 38 storage compartments are thoughtfully distributed throughout the interior.
Safety & Driver Assistance
On the safety front, the Tiggo 8L is built around a high-rigidity "Rock Solid" body structure, utilising 85% high-strength steel alongside hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel in key structural nodes. It is reinforced with dual front crash beams and an oversized aluminium alloy upper reinforcement bar. Passive safety is bolstered by 7 airbags across the cabin, including a front-centre far-side airbag and 2,060 mm full-length side curtain airbags with 6-second pressure retention, complemented by Driver Fatigue Monitoring and an automated E-Call emergency SOS system.
For active safety, the Tiggo 8L features an advanced Level 2.5+ ADAS suite, packing 19 driver-assist capabilities, including full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Speed Cruise Assist (SCF), Intelligent High Beam Control (IHC), Lane Change Assist (LCA), and Forward Collision Warning (FCW). A 360-degree surround-view monitor with a transparent underbody chassis view is also equipped as standard.
Market Performance & Reception
The rollout of the Tiggo 8L completes Chery's multi-tiered "Tiggo 8" portfolio, joining the Tiggo 8, Tiggo 8 PLUS, and Tiggo 8 PRO. Backed by four prestigious national automotive accolades for its engine, gearbox, chassis, and body structure, the flagship SUV combines a standard 2.0T+8AT powertrain, versatile 5/7-seater seating options, and an expansive 2,065-litre cargo area enabled by its 2,770 mm wheelbase, making it a formidable contender in the competitive RM150,000-class mid-size SUV arena. Real-world feedback from owners in July 2025 praised its robust powertrain response and practical cabin versatility. However, reviews note that the third-row seating in the 7-seater variant remains best reserved for children or occasional short trips rather than long-distance touring. On the whole, with its fully proprietary powertrain and chassis hardware, capacious practicality, and comprehensive safety credentials, the Tiggo 8L stands out as a compelling, all-rounded family SUV.
