In 2013, as Changjiang Bus teetered on the brink of insolvency, Hong Kong-listed FDG Electric Vehicles (formerly Sinopoly Battery, listed in 2011 and rebranded in 2014) stepped in with a restructuring buyout, renaming the firm Hangzhou Changjiang Automobile Co., Ltd..

On 17 April 2016, Changjiang Automobile officially launched its dedicated electric marque, "Changjiang EV", in Hangzhou, coinciding with the commissioning of the country's largest and most automated pure electric manufacturing facility. The initial rollout comprised four core model lines: the "Yige" pure electric minibus, "Yisheng" pure electric commercial van, "Yizhong" pure electric transit bus, and "Yiku" compact pure electric SUV. That same year, Changjiang Automobile became one of the earliest firms to secure EV passenger vehicle production clearance from the NDRC; in December 2017, the MIIT released its 302nd batch of approved vehicle manufacturers with Changjiang Automobile on the list, securing China's highly coveted NEV "dual qualification". Established in July 2016, Guizhou Changjiang Automobile Co., Ltd. remains Guizhou Province's only NEV player integrating R&D, manufacturing, sales, and aftersales for commercial EVs; focusing on pure electric commercial vehicles under its independent "Guizhou" brand and indirectly held by Hangzhou Changjiang Automobile, the unit pivoted from 2022 onwards towards rugged, mountainous operational duties across Guizhou, targeting heavy and light-duty electric commercial truck segments. Brand Matrix / Product Lineup

Conversely, Guizhou Changjiang Automobile has carved out an impressive niche in the commercial EV space in recent years. In 2025, Guizhou Changjiang produced and delivered over 15,000 commercial vehicles—a 68.8% year-on-year surge—generating revenue of 1.63 billion yuan (up 83.1%) across more than 20 provinces. Between January and August 2025, commercial EV van and truck sales jumped 163% to 7,500 units, generating an industrial output value of 762 million yuan. The facility continues to modernize its lines, boosting key station automation to over 80% and scaling throughput from 5 units per hour prior to 2025 to 15 units per hour.

Changjiang Automobile's technical architecture was built on clean-sheet, in-house R&D. Every model was engineered from the ground up around electric drive characteristics, amassing over 100 system innovation patents. The company committed to four core tenets: maintaining an independent indigenous brand, pursuing clean-sheet EV engineering, owning proprietary IP for all critical powertrain components, and driving relentlessly toward commercial industrialization.

In terms of core "Three-Electric" EV technology (battery, motor, electronic control), Changjiang Automobile possessed end-to-end proprietary IP and manufacturing capabilities for battery cells, modular packs, battery management systems (BMS), wheel-side motor drive axles, and vehicle control units (VCU). The marque introduced modular, scalable smart electric chassis architectures:

Sustainable Electric Commercial Architecture (SECA) , developed for 5-metre-plus light-to-medium commercial vans and full-sized buses, incorporated the group's in-house 5–13 tonne dual wheel-side motor drive axles, trimming kerb weight and boosting driveline efficiency. Flush with regulatory approvals, the company went on an aggressive land-banking spree across Hangzhou, Kunming, Gui'an, and Yantai, mapping out a cumulative 600,000-unit annual capacity that vastly outstripped market demand. The resulting capital drain and disjointed supply chain saddled the business with crippling debt, triggering its eventual collapse.

Following bankruptcy restructuring at the Hangzhou entity, court-approved rehabilitation plans are underway as restructuring investors work to consolidate assets and reinstate manufacturing licences and industrial operations. Its legacy production credentials and intellectual property portfolio retain strategic value, leaving open the possibility of revival under a new strategic backer or integration into an established OEM ecosystem for contract assembly.

Over at Guizhou Changjiang Automobile, however, a pragmatic commercial EV renaissance is well underway. Engineered specifically for the challenging, gradient-heavy topography of Guizhou's karst landscape, its "Guizhou" brand electric tipper trucks and heavy-duty commercial hauliers are tuned for superior energy efficiency and lower power consumption, steadily widening their footprint across specialized fleet networks. As a regional anchor enterprise, it has immense pull in attracting upstream and downstream supply chain partners. For 2026, the company is targeting annual production and sales exceeding 20,000 complete built-up (CBU) units, aiming for over 2.2 billion yuan in industrial output while spearheading concurrent export campaigns into Southeast Asia and South America.

Fittingly, Changjiang EV's trajectory splits into two telling halves: its opening act was a textbook case of reckless, hype-driven NEV overreach; its second chapter, sustained by grounded regional operations focused purely on rugged commercial utility, found a viable path to survival. For the wider automotive sector, the saga of this early pioneer proves that automotive manufacturing is an endurance marathon rather than a sprint of storytelling. Holding licences and deep pockets is no guarantee of success; what ultimately dictates survival is sharp product-market fit and unwavering strategic discipline.
