Ceramic Brakes

2026-10-22 16:50:00

Ceramic brakes usually refer to Carbon Ceramic Brakes (CCB) , a high-performance brake disc system crafted from carbon fibre-reinforced silicon carbide (SiC) composite materials, widely regarded as the pinnacle of braking technology.

Its core technology involves synthesizing carbon fibre and silicon carbide under extreme temperatures of 1,700°C, combining the high tensile strength of carbon fibre with the superior wear and oxidation resistance of ceramics.

Core Advantages: Weight Savings and Fade Resistance

  • Significant weight reduction and sharper handling: This is the most notable benefit of ceramic brakes. With a density merely one-third to half that of conventional cast-iron discs, unsprung mass can be reduced by over 50% for equivalent disc dimensions. Lower unsprung weight enhances suspension responsiveness, noticeably improving acceleration, turn-in agility, and overall handling dynamics.

  • Extreme thermal tolerance, track-ready: Engineered to reliably withstand operating temperatures from 1,000°C to over 1,300°C, vastly outperforming conventional cast-iron discs. Even under aggressive track driving, it effectively resists brake fade to deliver consistent, confidence-inspiring stopping power.

  • Extended service life, minimal brake dust: Under normal road conditions, its service life can reach 300,000 km or more—roughly 3 to 5 times that of standard steel brake discs. Furthermore, brake dust generated from friction is substantially lower compared to traditional brake setups.

The Trade-offs: Exorbitant Costs and Practical Limitations

  • Steep option prices and replacement costs: On supercars from marques like Porsche and Ferrari, specifying a carbon ceramic brake kit typically costs anywhere from tens of thousands to well over RM100,000—the option price alone is equivalent to buying a decent used car. When it comes to replacement, a full set of discs and brake pads can also easily run into tens of thousands of US dollars. The intricate manufacturing process and low production yields are the primary drivers of this hefty price tag.

  • Requires warm-up for optimal bite: In cold temperatures or during heavy rain, initial brake bite may not be as immediate as conventional steel brakes, requiring adequate heat buildup to reach peak operating performance. Some drivers may also encounter low-speed brake squeal during initial driving.

  • Susceptibility to impact damage: While exceptionally wear-resistant, the composite material is inherently brittle. Road debris strikes or improper handling during workshop maintenance can chip or damage the discs, leading to eye-watering replacement bills.

Applications and Future Outlook

Carbon ceramic brakes were originally developed for aerospace and Formula 1 racing, before making their production road car debut on the Porsche 911 GT2 in 2001. Today, they are standard or optional equipment on high-end supercars from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and other marques, as well as ultra-high-performance EVs like the Tesla Model S Plaid, BYD Yangwang U9, and Xiaomi SU7 Ultra.

According to Brembo’s technological roadmap, carbon ceramic applications are expanding beyond four-wheelers into superbikes (such as the Ducati Superleggera V4) and the WorldSBK championship. As manufacturing efficiencies improve and production costs gradually drop, more mainstream performance models are expected to adopt the technology.

Summary

Is the ultimate performance worth the premium?

Carbon ceramic brakes represent a masterclass in automotive engineering, offering tangible, race-proven advantages on track days and under hard driving. However, for the vast majority of motorists whose driving is confined to daily street use and who prioritise running costs, the steep price tag and cold-weather characteristics mean their prestige value often outweighs their real-world utility.

If budget is no barrier and your main objective is shaving lap times on the circuit, it is an unbeatable upgrade. For regular daily commuting, however, a high-performance set of cast-iron or steel brakes offers more than enough stopping power, without the need to pay an exorbitant premium for track-level hardware.
