Car Camping

1. Definition and Key Characteristics

Car camping is a sports and tourism activity centred around motor vehicles, integrated with gear such as tents and campervans or motorhomes for outdoor living. It encompasses various forms, including self-drive camping and recreational vehicle (RV) camping. Broadly speaking, it refers to any camping style that utilises a car as transport, whereas in a narrower sense, it specifically denotes RV camping. Its defining characteristic is the seamless blend of "mobility" and "living"—participants pack essentials such as tents, sleeping bags, portable stoves, and in-car fridges into their vehicles for independent travel. This offers full control over travel schedules as well as enhanced flexibility in dining and accommodation, completely free from the constraints of fixed flight or train schedules.

2. Main Categories and Classifications

Car camping can be categorised based on vehicle types and setups as follows:

  • Self-drive camping: Utilises standard passenger cars, SUVs, or 4x4 off-roaders to carry camping gear and pitch tents at designated campsites or in the wild.

  • RV camping: Uses motorhomes or caravans equipped with built-in bedding, storage cabinets, sanitary facilities, lighting, and air-conditioning systems, truly serving as a "home on wheels".

  • Tent camping: Setting up a tent as the primary lodging after driving to the destination, representing the most traditional camping style.

3. Campsite Facilities and Amenities

Car campsites are purpose-built grounds catering to motorists, offering essential vehicle replenishment and rest amenities. Campsites are typically partitioned into living, entertainment, business, and sports and recreation zones, complete with dedicated potable water and wastewater treatment systems, 220V power outlets, alongside washrooms, shower cubicles, and self-service laundrettes. Types of campsites include transit campsites (offering basic water and power hookups for short stopovers) and full-service campsites (larger setups featuring comprehensive accommodation, dining, sports, and entertainment facilities). By geographical setting, they range across mountainous, island, lakeside, beachfront, forest, and countryside locations.

4. Market Overview and Future Trends

Car camping remains in its nascent stages in China. As of late 2024, the national RV fleet stood at roughly 250,000 to 300,000 units, lagging considerably behind European and American markets. In 2024, the market size of the camping economy exceeded RMB 108.49 billion, backed by clear policy support from 14 government bodies, including the Ministry of Commerce, to promote structured growth. On the regulatory front, the "Quality Rating of Self-Drive and RV Campsites" standard was introduced in 2019, followed by fresh national standardisation initiatives in 2024 to raise campsite benchmarks. The consumer base is actively broadening from retirees to young families aged 28 to 45. Additionally, new energy vehicles (NEVs)—armed with features like Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) reverse charging, camp mode, and fold-flat bed mode—are revolutionising the car camping experience, allowing campers to easily power electric cooking appliances and projectors for the ultimate "glamping" lifestyle.
