The company was formed in 1912 through a high-profile corporate consolidation. Seeking to create an electric vehicle powerhouse to challenge established midwestern rivals like Detroit Electric and Baker Electric, local industrialists orchestrated a merger of several regional automotive and electrical carriage firms.

The primary entities absorbed into the new corporation included:

  • The Buffalo Electric Carriage Company: A respected local manufacturer of luxury electric buggies and runabouts.
  • The Babcock Electric Carriage Company: Founded by F.A. Babcock, this firm was highly regarded for its advanced battery placement patents and high-quality chassis engineering.
  • The Clark Motor Company: A specialist in vehicle assembly and components.

The newly consolidated Buffalo Electric Vehicle Company centralized its manufacturing operations at a large facility on 1219 Main Street in Buffalo, utilizing a vast network of local component suppliers.

Technological Innovations and Marketing Success (1912–1914)

Upon its formation, the company retired the older "Babcock" and "Buffalo Electric Carriage" badges, selling all subsequent vehicles under the unified Buffalo brand name. The cars were immediate engineering triumphs.

Buffalo electric cars featured an innovative direct-drive system that eliminated complex external chains or belts, sending power directly from the electric motor to the rear axle. They utilized advanced foot-pedal controllers that allowed drivers to smoothly modulate between multiple forward speeds and mechanical braking.

The brand's marketing heavily targeted high society. Because electric cars did not require physical strength to start, they were heavily promoted as the ultimate independent transport for women. Prominent American socialites utilized Buffalo cars for urban shopping trips, social visits, and commuting within city limits, where the vehicles' limited driving range was not an impediment.

Supply Chains and the Gasoline Triumph (1914–1915)

Despite their engineering excellence, structural macroeconomic headwinds quickly severely impacted Buffalo and the wider electric vehicle industry.

In 1912, Charles Kettering invented the electric self-starter for gasoline engines, completely eliminating the dangerous manual hand-crank. Concurrently, Henry Ford’s mass-production assembly lines allowed gasoline cars (like the Model T) to be sold at a fraction of the cost of a luxury electric car. While a Buffalo Electric car retailed for a luxury price of around $2,600 to $3,000, a Model T could be purchased for under $600.

As cheap gasoline became widely available and the American public demanded longer-range vehicles capable of cross-country touring, the market for localized city EVs collapsed. Unable to match the pricing of mass-produced combustion vehicles and suffering from a drying capital supply chain, the Buffalo Electric Vehicle Company ceased all automobile manufacturing operations in 1915.
