Brake Light

Introduction: Brake lights are generally fitted at the rear of a vehicle, primarily emitting red light to enhance visibility and light penetration. This allows trailing motorists to easily notice when the vehicle ahead is braking—even in low-visibility conditions—helping to prevent rear-end collisions. In basic vehicle setups, power runs from the supply through a fuse to the brake switch; depressing the brake pedal engages the switch, directing electrical current to the two main brake lights and the high-mounted stop lamp, completing the circuit via an earth connection to the vehicle body.

Classification: By Material: Depending on the bulb technology and materials used, brake lights are broadly categorised into gas-filled (halogen) brake lights and LED brake lights. Gas-filled brake lights (such as halogen bulbs) benefit from mature technology and lower replacement costs; however, they emit radiation, contain mercury, and feature fragile glass enclosures prone to breakage, which can lead to environmental pollution. On the other hand, LED brake lights utilise light-emitting diodes, offering zero radiation, eco-friendly operation, and a significantly longer lifespan.
