Overview

The BYD Shark (often known colloquially in China as "Shark") is BYD's first global new energy pick-up truck, positioned as a "super hybrid luxury intelligent pick-up truck". Making its global debut in Mexico in May 2024, the strategic model is built on BYD's DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform and aims to reshape the global pick-up truck segment through high performance and new energy technology. Marketed globally as the BYD SHARK 6, its domestic Chinese market launch is slated for the second half to Q4 2026 under the "FANGCHENG BAO" sub-brand, with estimated pre-sale pricing between RM180,000 and RM250,000.
As a mid-to-large pick-up truck, the Shark measures 5,457 mm in length, 1,971 mm in width, and 1,925 mm in height, with a 3,260 mm wheelbase in a 5-seater double-cab configuration. In international markets, its pricing matches or even exceeds traditional ICE stalwarts like the Toyota Hilux, spearheading BYD's push into the global premium pick-up segment.
Design Language
Penned by a design team led by BYD Global Design Director Wolfgang Egger, the Shark blends rugged muscularity with sleek, modern technology. Up front, it features a large enclosed grille flanked by distinctive C-shaped LED headlamp clusters, anchored by an illuminated BYD emblem at the centre for a signature lighting profile. The lower front bumper is fitted with a substantial silver skid plate and robust black cladding, reinforcing its purposeful off-road character. In profile, pronounced wheel arches, clean character lines, and high ground clearance give it an athletic, ready-for-action stance, while full-width LED taillights at the rear echo the front styling.
The interior represents another major highlight, shedding the utilitarian and low-rent stigma typical of conventional pick-up trucks. The cabin takes cues from the rugged, tech-forward aesthetic of the domestic FANGCHENG BAO Bao 5, featuring a predominantly black theme elevated with high-contrast accents for a youthful, sporty vibe. The dashboard features a clean, horizontal layout headlined by a standard 12.8-inch adaptive rotating floating infotainment touchscreen, paired with a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch W-HUD head-up display to form a comprehensive triple-screen interface. A four-spoke multi-function steering wheel and a wide centre console tunnel retain tactile, practical physical switchgear.
Powertrain & Performance
Performance is the Shark's headline attribute. Underpinned by the DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain strikes a compelling balance between potent performance and efficiency. The setup pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged hybrid-dedicated petrol engine with dual electric motors across both axles. The front motor produces 170 kW and 310 Nm of torque, while the rear motor churns out 150 kW and 340 Nm. Total system output exceeds 430 hp with immense combined torque, propelling the pick-up from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive 5.7 seconds.
In terms of range, the Shark packs a 29.58 kWh proprietary BYD Blade Battery, delivering an NEDC-rated all-electric range of 100 km. With a full tank and a full charge, total NEDC cruising range reaches up to 840 km, virtually eliminating range anxiety on long-distance hauls. On the efficiency front, fuel consumption in battery-depleted hybrid mode is rated at just 7.5 L/100 km on the NEDC cycle. Charging needs are handled by up to 40 kW DC fast charging, juicing the pack from 30% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in around 20 minutes.
Chassis & Handling
The chassis underpins the Shark's genuine go-anywhere credentials. Utilising a heavy-duty ladder-frame (body-on-frame) chassis typical of robust pick-up trucks, it integrates BYD's acclaimed CTC (Cell to Chassis) technology. This embeds the Blade Battery directly into the high-strength frame as a structural member, substantially improving torsional rigidity and overall crash protection. For the suspension, the Shark steps above the norm with premium-grade front and rear double wishbone independent suspension, ensuring superb ride comfort and composed handling dynamics. An electric full-time four-wheel drive (AWD/4WD) system intelligently distributes torque across axles to suit road conditions. Multi-terrain modes—including Mud, Sand, and Snow—are standard alongside a virtual differential lock, delivering exceptional off-road traction and recovery capability via dedicated chassis tuning.
Cabin & Equipment
The Shark's equipment and creature comforts rival those of premium passenger SUVs. Beyond the digital cluster, rotating infotainment touchscreen, and HUD, the operating system features an integrated voice assistant and supports over-the-air (OTA) updates. In terms of convenience, it offers NFC digital key access, smartphone app remote control, dual front phone storage slots with a 50W wireless charging pad on the driver's side, and multiple USB ports. For seating comfort, the driver gets a 6-way power-adjustable seat, while both front and rear rows feature seat heating and ventilation. Audiophiles are catered to with either an 8-speaker audio setup or a 12-speaker Dynaudio premium sound system depending on the market specification. An onboard karaoke (KTV) app is also on board to liven up journeys. Combined with a spacious, flat rear floor and a generous cargo bed (official capacity to be confirmed), the Shark excels at both passenger comfort and payload utility.
Safety & Driver Assistance
Safety is central to the BYD Shark's appeal and has been validated by top safety authorities. In Australia's rigorous ANCAP crash testing, the Shark earned a full five-star safety rating, scoring 85% for Adult Occupant Protection, 87% for Child Occupant Protection, 74% for Vulnerable Road User Protection, and 86% for Safety Assist. Ultra-high-strength steel comprises 78% of the structure, working in tandem with the CTC platform to create an exceptionally rigid safety cell. Passive safety is reinforced with six airbags across the board. On the active safety front, the Shark comes equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) with Level 2 semi-autonomous capability, incorporating Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and more. A 540-degree panoramic camera system with transparent underfloor chassis view provides full situational awareness in tight spots and tricky terrain.
Market Performance & Verdict
As a core global offering, the BYD Shark has already made a formidable impression in international markets. Between its Mexican launch in May 2024 and September 2025, global cumulative sales surpassed 46,000 units. In the first half of 2025 alone, export deliveries neared 27,000 units, with standout performances in Australia and Mexico. In Australia, it even broke into the top three best-selling pick-up trucks, commanding an average selling price between RM348,000 and RM375,000—well above its conventional ICE competitors.
Back home in China, the Shark's local branding and market debut remain eagerly anticipated. Slated to arrive in 2026 under the premium FANGCHENG BAO banner, the electrified pick-up will leverage elevated brand prestige to take the fight directly to established heavyweights such as the GWM Shanhai Cannon Hi4-T and Ford Ranger. More than just a new product, the BYD Shark marks a defining milestone for Chinese carmakers, demonstrating how new energy technology can successfully crack open the lucrative global premium pick-up market long dominated by American and Japanese manufacturers.
